CHOOSING A VAPORIZER How do you know what kind of Vaporizer is right for you? There are a couple of different types, all with their own unique advantages and disadvantages. Most people consider the different types to be: ego Style, Box Mod Style, Box Mod and Mechanical Mod. The Term APV (Advanced Personal Vaporizer) is used to refer to a device with advanced features such as variable power settings and usually has an LCD screen. Devices in the ego style, Box Mod style and Box Mod categories, can be considered APV s. Differences in Battery Life, Battery Type, whether it has Variable Voltage/Wattage, Sub-Ohm Compatibility and a Protection Circuit will help you to determine which kind of device suits your needs. Battery Life is measured in mah. The higher the number, the longer your battery will last. Passthrough is when your device can vape while charging. Variable Wattage/Voltage can be used to adjust how hot your coil gets and how quickly it gets hot. Sub-Ohm vaping is when a vaporizer utilizes a low resistance coil, producing more flavor and clouds. t all devices support Sub-Ohm vaping and will not work with Sub-Ohm coils. A Protection Circuit is the electronics in a device. It allows for features like 10 second cutoff, battery over discharge protection and battery life display. Vaporizers of all kinds are available at multiple price points, so price should not be a factor in choosing a device. Beginners are encouraged to start with an ego style or a Regulated Box Mod device, as these are the least complicated in their use and are often sold in kit form. Box and Mechanical Mods require some more complicated assembly and the removal of batteries for charging. Remember to keep in mind, Mods are rarely sold with the batteries and charger required to use them. Long wicks run the length of the tank, moving eliquid towards the coil. Top coils can produce better hits to start vs. a bottom coil and they are very easy to refill. CHOOSING AN ELIQUID So, you ve found and purchased one of the best reviewed Personal Vaporizers and tank systems, but you just aren t getting a satisfying amount of flavor or clouds? It s time to consider trying some different eliquids. This section contains detailed information about the different kinds of eliquids available and how to choose one based on your device and needs. In addition to flavoring and usually Nicotine, the two main ingredients in eliquid are Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin. Propylene Glycol is a viscous colorless liquid. It is nearly odorless, but possesses a sweet taste. It is used in many food products and is considered safe for consumption. A very small percentage of people will have a slight allergic reaction to PG. Vegetable Glycerin is a sweet tasting, colorless, odorless sugar alcohol compound derived from vegetables. There is no allergen risk with VG. Wicking Time is how long it takes for eliquid to absorb into the cotton inside your atomizer or rebuildable coils. If you fire your Vaporizer while the wick is dry, it will produce a burnt taste. To avoid this happening, you must allow some time for the eliquid to wick. Because of its higher viscosty, VG has a longer wicking time than PG. VARIABLE VOLTAGE If your Vaporizer has Variable Voltage or Wattage, it means your device is compatible with a larger variety of tanks. These controls regulate how hot the coil in your atomizer gets, and how quickly it gets that hot. Hotter coils, heating faster, produce better flavor and larger clouds. Having this ability means Vapers can use a multitude of unique tank and atomizer styles, as many require a certain voltage/wattage that may only be obtained on a variable device. When you are using variable voltage, you are telling the device to send a fixed amount of energy through the circuit regardless of resistance. Variable wattage is different in that it measures the amount of work done in a unit of time. With variable wattage, you are telling your device how much work you want it to do, allowing it figure out the voltage needed to overcome the resistance of the coil. Constant power devices deliver predetermined power to model specific atomizers. How To Use The Variable Voltage Chart 1. Find resistance level in Ohms (Ω) on the packaging of your atomizer. 2. Locate the row for your resistance level on the left of the chart. 3. Follow this row to the right until you locate the cell(s) in light green color. 4. The corresponding number in the top row of the chart for a specific cell indicates the voltage level required to acheive neccessary power output. 5. If there are more than one green cells in your devices row, it means there is a range of acceptable voltage levels, it is up to the user at what level they will vape. MECHANICAL MODS Mechanical Mods are the most customizable vaping device available. They allow Vapers to to use coils with resistance as low as.1 ohms safely. Users who want large vapor clouds and intense flavor prefer low resistance coils because the larger surface area of the coil(s) produces more vapor. There is no circuitry in a Mechanical Mod, the atomizer draws power directly from the battery, which is why only safe chemistry batteries are recommended. A small device referred to as a protection circuit can be placed between your mod s battery and the contact point, it will shut off your battery in the event that it is over discharged. Additionally, something called a kick will do the same and provide mech mod users with variable voltage and wattage. Because Mechanical Mods do not have protection circuits built into the device, there are a few things users must do to keep safe. An IMR battery is recommended because it has a safer chemistry, making it less likely to Vent. Batteries can Vent when over charged, over discharged or from a short. Mods come equipped with Vent Holes which will allow gas venting out of the battery to escape the device, preventing combustion. When carrying your mod, make sure to lock the firing button by using the reverse threaded lock ring at the bottom of the device, unless your device has a recessed or side firing button. CHOOSING MOD BATTERIES Of the many kinds of Lithium batteries on the market, there are 3 types that are safe for vaping; ICR (LiCoO2 or LiCd), IMR (LiMn) and Hybrids (a Mix of both). An IMR battery s chemistry is considered safer than an ICR s, and are recomended for mechanical mods or devices without protection circuits. IMR s amperage rates are also better suited for low resistance coils. In a protected device, one may choose an ICR for their higher capacity. Hybrids offer a safer chemistry, with the longer capacity of an ICR. There are a number of battery sizes used with Box and Mech Mods. Make sure to check the specifications of your device when purchasing. The vendor will tell you which size battery is required. Rarely do these devices come with batteries, so you must purchase them and a charger separate. When using safe chemistry batteries (IMR or Hybrid), battery stacking can be done in a mech mod. Many mech mods have adjustable lengths, to accommodate different sized batteries, making it so users can customize the overall length of their vaporizer. There are 3 ways in which Lithium batteries are measured and rated; Voltage, Amperage, and Storage Capacity. For vaping batteries, the voltage will always be 3.7v. That is the nominal or average voltage rating for the battery, meaning it is considered fully charged at 4.2v and dead at 3.2v. Amperage determines the maximum continuous discharge rate of the battery. A vaporizer with variable voltage and wattage, removable batteries and upgradeable parts, also called a Box Mod. Atomizer - The heating coil used to vaporize eliquid. May be built into a tank or clearomizer or may be a replaceable part in a tank. Bottom Dual Coil - An atomizer with two coils wired together at the bottom of a tank. This is the most popular style of atomizer. Box Mod - Used to refer to unregulated, custom devices built into boxes, now used to refer to an APV utilizing a box shape design Bridge - The part of an atomizer that transfers eliquid from the tank to the coils, it is usually a stainless steel mesh screen Cartomizer - Self-contained eliquid and Atomizer, used with stick style ecigs. CE2 (4,5) - Top coil style clearomizer/tank Clearomizer - Technical term for a tank with clear glass or plastic eliquid containment tank Dripping - Applying eliquid directly to an atomizer as opposed to using a tank or clearomizer Drip Tip - A replaceable mouthpiece for your tank, most are a standard size and can be upgraded with stylish or more functional tips to suit the vaper s needs. Dry Hit - Will happen when a vaporizer is fired before eliquid has fully wicked its way onto the coil. ego - A mid sized, cylindrical vaporizer. Also describes the style of connection between tank and vaporizer battery. ICR - A less safe chemistry battery, used only in vaporizers with protection circuits IMR - A safe chemistry Lithium battery used for vaping Juice - Slang term for eliquid mah - a unit of electric charge, equal to the charge transferred by a steady current of one ampere flowing for one hour. This is your battery s capacity, the higher the number, the longer your battery will last Mechanical Mod - A vaporizer lacking electronics. The atomizer is drawing power directly from the battery. Rebuildable Atomizer - An atomizer that can be rebuilt using Kanthal wire. This is the most involved atomizer, but the cheapest in the long run Resistance (Ohms) - The unit of measurement that relates to the thickness (gauge) of the coil in your atomizer. Thicker the wire is, the less resistance it will have. Thicker coils produce larger clouds and better flavor. Steeping - When an eliquid is aged. Supposedly brings out more flavor. Throat Hit - The feeling of vapor hitting your throat. Variable Voltage - The ability to change a device s voltage, allowing vapers to control their cloud and flavor production Variable Wattage - Similar to variable voltage, however this is an automatic device that detects the atomizers resistance and outputs constant power needed to fire it. VG - Vegetable Glycerin, a main ingredient in eliquid Wattage - The measurement of power delivered from vaporizer battery to atomizer. Wick - The material surrounding an atomizer coil, holding the eliquid close to it so it can be vaporized.
