C O N T E N T 1. GENERAL INFORMATION ON APNOEA 2 2. INSTALLATION OF RECORDER 3 3. START RECORDING 3 4. INSTALLATION OF PC SOFTWARE 4 5. ANALYSIS ON PC 4 6. TREND ANALYSIS 6 page 1

1. 1. GENERAL INFORMATION ON APNOEA Snoring arises when during sleep at in and out breathing the air cannot flow unhindered, when the respiratory system is blocked. For children and youths the rate is only at 10%. In comparison from adults are affected 60% of men and 40% of women in Europe. Compared with the normal snoring snoring with breathing stops, called apnoea, can cause heavy health damages. Apnoea longer than 10 seconds and more than 10 times per hour are classified as pathological apnoea and should be treated medically. Due to an restless slepp and the decreased oxigen content in blood numerours symptoms can appear like headaches, day fatigue, depressions or cardiac arrhythmias. The risk for heart attach and strokes considerably increased. With the system APNOEDOC of IfU Diagnostic Systems GmbH you can do a precheck easliy and wireless with your smart phone to get to know if a further medical treatment e.g. in a sleep laboratory is necessary. Therefore you use your smart phone as recorder and put it near your sleeping place. With the PC software APNOEDOC the recorded data is evaluated automatically and shows the result visually. So you can see at a glance if a visit to the doctor and or sleep laboratory is required. Advice: We recommend mend to consult a doctor resp. a sleep laboratory if the number of detected apnoea-like events is more than 10. On the homepage www.apnoedoc.de you will find shortly a list of sleep laboratores near by. page 2

2. 2. INSTALLAT NSTALLATION OF RECORDER For an optimal result of software analysis we receommend to use the app Hi-Q MP3Recorder available against charge. An upright position is recommendable. Please place the phone OUTSIDE the bed. After awakening you can stop the record by click on stop. We recommend the following settings prior to the first use: In the settings please change the sample rate to 22kHz (second to last in the list). Please confirm the warning with OK. page 3

4. 4. INSTALLATION OF PC SOFTWARE PC Insert the CD into the drive of your computer. Follow the installation instructions. The software creates an icon 5. 5. ANALYSIS ON PC PC on your desktop. The files are saved automatically in a compact format that allows faster data processing of the file for the future. page 4

6. 6. TREND ANALYSIS The trend analysis allows you to monitor your sleeping behaviour over a long period and to detectchanges. Therefore proceed as follows: 1) Click Open and select from file as source. 2) Select all files that you wish to analyse. By keystroke Shift you can select several files paralelly. 3) Now you can choose up to 3 trend parameters (check box) from: average number of snore events per hour relative snore duration [%] averaged intensity [1 bis 10] averaged length of snore events [sec] snore index averaged number of anpoea-like events per hour page 6

Screenshot of the analysis Trend : page 7

ANNEX A Explanation of statistical analysis number of detected snoring events: From the saved audio file all events with a minimum length of 0.5 seconds and a maximum duration of 20 seconds are detected as snore events and from them the absolute number is determined. averaged number per hour: Number of detected snoring events related to the total recording time in hours relative snore duration [%]: Total of duration of detected snore events related to the total recording time multiplied by 100% averaged intensity of snore events per hour [1 10]: Average of the sound level of all snore events. The highest peak is defined as intensity 10. relative distribution of main intensities: Top3 of intensity numbers of snore events (compare. register intensity analysis, lower diagram) averaged length of snore events [sec]: Total duration of detected snore events related to the number of detected snore events (compare. register length analysis, lower diagram) distribution of length of snore events [sec]: snore index: Considers all values of distribution. The distanced of all values are considered from the central value and arithmetic averaging is determined of them. Averaged number per hour multiplied with the averaged intensity of snore events. It is shown in the bar chart as black line. The snore index can be valued from 0 (green range = no or only low snoring) up to 2000 (red range = heavy snoring). number of detected apnoea-like events: The audio file is browsed for sound patterns that match to typical images of apnoea. The number of detected apnoea-like sounds is shown here. averaged length of apnoea-like events [sec]: The averaged time duration of detected breathing stops is specified in seconds. averaged number of apnoea-like events per hour: This value complies to the number of all detected apnea-like events related to the total recording time in hours. If the snore index for several single measurements lies in the red range or is the averaged number of apnoea-like events per hour more than 10 we recommend a sleep laboratory for further medical examination. page 8

Explanation of intensity analysis In the register Intensity Analysis the upper diagram shows the chronology of the snoring events classified into intensity grades from 1 to 10. The lower diagram shows such histogram (image of distribution). of the intensity of snoring events during the entire recording time. page 9

Explanation of length analysis In the register Length Analysis the upper diagram shows the chronology of the number of snoring events in intervals of for example 10 minutes. The lower diagram shows a histogram of the length of single snoring events during the entire recording time. With pressed left mouse button the nominal range can be spread by mouse move to the right and back by move to the left. With pressed right mouse button you can move the diagram in all directions (right, left, up, down). page 10
