Healthwatch works on behalf of the whole of the community children, young people and adults and needs people to tell it what s going on in the health and social care services in their area. Healthwatch can tell services about patient experiences of care and hold them to account; it can also enter and view services such as care homes and hospitals, observe what is happening and report back to commissioners. People can feel excluded from services and we know that access to services and treatment is not always equal to all, so Healthwatch also has a signposting 1
function to navigate the health and social care system. Healthwatch Bristol is independent, transparent and accountable and powerful, with the strength of the law and the national influence of Healthwatch England behind it. Healthwatch Bristol is provided by The Care Forum. W: www.healthwatchbristol.co.uk W: www.thecareforum.org The engagement Healthwatch Bristol facilitated a focus group engagement session, in which commentators/ service users and staff were able to give feedback about their experiences of accessing health and social care services in Bristol. Healthwatch Bristol aims to create a comfortable environment in which people feel able to provide feedback on their and their children s experiences of using health and social services. Healthwatch (Hw) informed the group that if they were not comfortable giving feedback on the day there was an opportunity for them to take a Tell Us Your Story leaflet (TUYS) which they could fill in their own time and send back to Hw. Hw informed service users about the other services provided by The Care Forum explaining how to access advocacy services and Well Aware. The theme for Healthwatch Bristol s quarter was society, health and wellbeing and how a person s society may impact upon their experiences of accessing information and health and social care services. Healthwatch was able to communicate to the group and provide the opportunity for a one-to-one session where required. 2

Healthwatch Bristol Feedback Number of Comments: 9 in total Comments received 4 Negative 1 Mixed 2 Positive Primary Care/ GPs Services Montpelier Health Centre/ Postnatal care: Commentator stated that her postnatal care and support was not particularly helpful. She informed Healthwatch that her baby s weight was not increasing and she felt that the staff criticised her because of this. She told Hw that her son was just a baby then and the health visitors were said that they worry about obesity. Her child is now one years old and when she informed the health visitors that she was still breast feeding him commentator felt they criticised this too. She had told the health visitor that her son sleeps in her bed at which she responded with, Oh he s got you wrapped round his finger. She feels that these comments are unsupportive and very judgmental and their jobs should be to help mothers rather than criticise. She no longer attends as she feels the health visitors are unprofessional and make negative comments. Montpelier Health Centre: Commentator informed HW that she is happy with the service she receives at her local GP for herself and her son of 20 months. She attends mainly when her son is unwell and says that she feels her son s needs are met and they provided advice, medication and attend to both their needs well. Recently she visited her GP for her son who was unwell, he was diagnosed with a throat infection and was prescribed antibiotics. Commentator stated that in her experience she found Montpelier Health Centre provides a good and reassuring service. 3
Montpelier Health Centre: Commentator was informed by her Health Visitor that she would be able to access a Family Support Worker for additional help and guidance through the surgery. She said that is was a very helpful and informative service and has helped support her with her two year old and eight month old baby. She said they provided support for her child s behavior problems, provided advice and recommendations. Montpelier Health Centre: Commentator has a language barrier: she speaks Spanish. She has already been registered with the health centre at Montpelier. She was receiving letters informing her that her child was due for immunisations. As she cannot read English she was unaware of the letters contents and importance. She received help and support from Spanish Liaison Worker from the school who translated the letters and contacted the GP surgery to make an appointment for the commentator s child s immunisations. As the commentator has a language barrier she often finds accessing the health centre difficult and would not be able to manage if she did not have the support of the liaison worker. Charlotte Keel Health Centre: Commentator had recently visited her surgery to see her health visitor with regards to her daughter s, who was one year and five months, check-up. She said that she found the service very good saying that her health visitor was supportive and positive. She said the nurse practitioner informed her about the vaccinations and felt that they worked well with her child when giving her injections. She was concerned about some mixed information given by her health visitors when she asked whether it was necessary to give her child Vitamin D supplements, with one saying that it was a requirement and beneficial and another disagreeing. The contradicting information left her confused and unsure of what to do. Dental services Oasis Dentist: Commentator stated that she and her children found that Oasis Dentist appointment provisions attend to have good timing system with minimum wait. She said the staff were very kind to her child when performing routine checkups. She found they were good at providing useful advice to parents on ways to encourage children to brush their teeth. attitude, treatment explanation and of quality of care in her experience was very good. Other services St Paul s Children s Centre, rock a baby group : Commentator attended this group which was for parents with difficulties at the early stages of birth. She said the service ran once a week for an hour and provided an opportunity to speak to other parents who had difficulties and provide singing and sensory activities for the children. They went through lots of questions and once they were reassured all was ok she was advised to give her daughter Ibuprofen and within a few hours her temperature had reduced.
