A Holistic Understanding of Blood Chemistry With Kimberly Balas, PhD, ND and Steven Horne, RH(AHG) Why The Blood? Feeds all organs and tissues Key element of biological terrain Must be in balance for all cellular function Reveals story of structure & function Objective recognized tool UNDERSTANDING LAB VALUES 1

Isolate individual tests and treat out of range results Diagnose a pathology from a test and prescribe a drug Insufficient testing or wrong testing used Medical Approach Determine appropriate diagnostic coding for insurance coverage Discover patterns of underlying root causes Holistic Approach Using nutrition based on metabolic profiling to strengthen body Based on body systems Discover underlying emotional issues Physiological Ranges Looking at the needs of the individual instead of a standard for an average person Using proven patterns to reveal subclinical risk factors instead of creating disease labels Albumin! Globulin, Total! A/G Ratio! Bilirubin, Total! Alkaline Phosphatase! LDH! AST (SGOT)! ALT (SGPT)! Total Iron! Cholesterol, Total! Triglycerides! TSH! Thyroxine (T4)! T3 Uptake! Urine ph! Specific Gravity! Bun/Creatin Ratio! Test! 2

Adjusted Ranges In many cases lab ranges are not a reflection of the best science An example of this is cholesterol range Lab ranges are often 0-199 If you had 0 cholesterol, you d be dead! Cholesterol ranges were lowered to push the sale of more statin drugs There is evidence that more serious problems can occur from low cholesterol than from high cholesterol Holistic range is 175-275, which puts 225 as the optimal cholesterol level The total cholesterol is only one piece of the puzzle of what is going on Why is It Out of Range? The biggest weakness of modern medicine is its tendency to treat symptoms (or effects) rather than to look for underlying causes. The focus is on dictating to the body and not allowing the body to do what it was designed to do If cholesterol is high according to the lab range, the doctor may recommend a statin drug to lower cholesterol The question, Why is the cholesterol high? doesn t get asked In approaching this holistically, we try to determine the underlying reason why a test is out of range and the underlying culprit Tying Results to Systems Many organs and glands contribute to maintaining healthy markers By looking at which organs contribute to maintaining certain blood factors, we can get an idea of which organs and glands need the most help by looking at groupings of tests related to that organ Value (Relative)! 1.60! 1.40! 1.20! 1.00! 0.80! 0.60! 0.40! 0.20! 0.00! Hypothalamus! Anterior Pituitary! Posterior Pituitary! Pancreas! Pancreatic Head! Pancreatic Tail! Pineal! Thyroid! Parathyroid! Parotids! Thymus! Gallbladder! Liver! Kindeys! Heart! Lung! Stomach! 3

Example of Emotions and Blood Chemistry High Cholesterol: Difficulty processing emotions, aggressive, demanding, moody, irritable, prone to emotional outbursts Low Cholesterol: Holding emotions in, issues with self worth, buried anger, feeling stuck Isolated in medicine to psychiatry Linked to DNA Impacts all physical elements Emotions Can be suppressed or vented The great tragedy of science the slaying of a beautiful hypothesis by an ugly fact. Thomas Huxley (1825-1895) 4

The Bottom Line The economics of medical research mandate the discovery of solutions dependent upon a drug, surgical procedure or an appliance that can be developed and sold. Even when a promising avenue of research revealing a potential natural cure surfaces, the investigation tends to be dropped in favor of a more profitable approach This ties the person to the system and not to empower them for health Blaming cholesterol for heart disease is like blaming the bandaide for a cut! Indicators UNDERSTANDING BLOOD TESTS 5

Cholesterol Function Formation of the cell membrane Prevents neurological problems Precursor for Vitamin D production Protects against hypertension Raw material to make hormones Prevents cancer cells Necessary for tissue repair Cholesterol Does NOT. Create heart disease Increase from consumption of fats Supply calories Build up in adipose tissue Function without synthesis Used by the body for energy Adequately supplied from food 6

You Do NOT Get Elevated Cholesterol From Eating Fat Dietary cholesterol (from food) accounts for no more than 10% of blood cholesterol. Cholesterol is so important the body produces 3,000-4,000mg of it each and every day Metabolism Study: with even a 30% fat diet, increasing dietary cholesterol from 319mg to 941mg per day, the blood LDL only increased a mere 6%. Dietary Cholesterol is Insignificant Metabolism 2001 May; 50(5): 594-597 Ancel Keys, the father of the cholesterol-heart disease hypothesis, said in 1997 There is no connection whatsoever between the cholesterol in food and cholesterol in the blood and we ve known that all along. WHAT YOUR DOCTOR SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CHOLESTEROL Fats Are Not the Culprit Only 10% of cholesterol comes from food Dietary fat is not stored as body fat Stored fats originate from carbohydrate consumption Carbohydrates are stored as triglycerides in adipose tissue 7

IF... Cholesterol REALLY Caused Heart Disease It would be a risk factor in all ages and both sexes NOT TRUE The rate of heart disease in 65 year old men is 10x that of 45 year old men NOT TRUE Women suffer 300% less heart disease than men, in spite of having higher average cholesterol levels There is absolutely NO relationship between total cholesterol levels and mortality from cardiovascular or any other causes of disease in women. Circulation. Sept 1992, 86(3); pp. 1046-60 THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF CHOLESTEROL Why Cholesterol Elevates Ranges: 175-275 mg/dl (CA 4.525 7.112 mmol/l ) Bile emulsification issues Solutions: Liver Cleanse, Astringents, Milk Thistle Hypofunctioning anterior pituitary/hypothalamus Digestive system not preparing proteins to be assimilated into the bloodstream Solutions: Glandulars, Minerals, Alkalizing Herbs Solutions: Digestive Enzymes, Liver Cleanse, Lecithin 8

Low Cholesterol Ranges: 175-275 mg/dl (CA 4.525 7.112 mmol/l ) Fat is congested in the liver and not able to be metabolized (creates an inflammatory response) Solutions: Milk Thistle, Adaptagens, Anti-Inflammatories Iodine is failing to release the nitrogen bond (low triglycerides) Solutions: Iodine, Black Walnut Solutions: Lipase, Liver Building, MSM Congestion in the digestive tract due to bile salt inadequacy Low Cholesterol Creates Oxidative Stress Heavy Metal Toxicity Elevated Cancer Risk Low Serotonin Levels Cardiovascular Disease High Suicide Rates Low HDL High HDL Increased Toxicity Risk Constipation Not enough exercise High sugar/high carb/ low fat intake Alcohol Atherosclerosis Hyperinsulinemia Hyperthyroidism Exposure to pesticides Heavy Metal toxicity(mercury, lead, cadmium) Autoimmune response Excessive steroid use 9

Heavy Metal Detox Vitex Omega 3 s HDL Calcium Triglycerides produced mainly from dietary carbohydrates (not fat) Elevated produces 70% increased risk of cardiovascular disease Triglycerides Elevated triglycerides are a strong warning signal for heart risk Electrolyte imbalance of chloride and sodium controlled by the adrenal Bitter Melon Alpha-Keto Glutaric Acid Adrenal Glandular High Triglycerides Trace Minerals 10

Why Triglycerides Elevate Ranges 75-175 (CA.855 1.995) Electrolyte imbalance of chloride, and sodium by adrenals (due to stress and high carbs) Fatty acids are not being oxidized properly by pancreatic enzymes Glycerol is too acid, which is due to a lack of infusion of phosphorus in the stomach Solutions: Potassium, Dong Quai, Safflower Solutions: Digestive Enzymes, Lecithin Solutions: Adrenal Glandular, B-Complex, Trace Minerals Damages the lining of arteries Increases blood vessel blockages Homocysteine Low thyroid function Accelerates loss of bone density in osteoporosis Vitamin B-12 Kelp Adaptagens Elevated Homocysteine Curcumin 11

Inflammatory indicator Plaque can be proportional to the degree of CRP elevation HS-CRP Synthetic HRT can elevate Arthritis and tissue breakdown HS-CRP Levels Low risk for cardiovascular disease 1 mg/l Moderate risk for cardiovascular disease between 1 and 3 mg/l High risk for cardiovascular disease >3 mg/l SOLUTIONS Vitamin C Boswellia Xanthones Resveratrol Krill Oil CRP level > 10 mg/l may be seen in an acute plaque rupture such as a heart attack or stroke Metabolic Profiling NUTRITIONAL INDICATORS 12

Metabolic Typing Metabolic typing is a method of analyzing sympathetic and parasympathetic balance to help people determine their optimal nutritional program Nervous System Dominance Sympathetic Acid Alkaline Parasympathetic Sympathetic Metabolizers Require a different ratio of protein/carbs/fats There are three types in this category with a weak, moderate and higher function Require an alkalizing diet, low in purine, and high in potassium. Proteins essentially should come from poultry, fish, or vegetable sources. Sympathetic types do well with all fruits, and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Usually require digestive enzymes 13

Parasympathetic Metabolizers Require a higher protein intake There are three types in this category with a weak, moderate and higher function Need a diet that is acidifying and require more minerals. Have the ability to process clean red meat Certain leafy greens can upset the system Require the right types of grains Metabolic Type One Burn sugar slowly. Can eat most fruits and vegetables. Does well on a raw diet. Important Supplements Liver cleansing Adaptagens Plant based minerals Metabolic Type Two Burns sugar rapidly, tendency to hypoglycemia. Avoid sugar and high glycemic foods Does well on a higher protein food plan Important Supplements: Digestive bitters Magnesium Alteratives 14

Metabolic Type Three Balanced Metabolizers Equal ratio of pure protein and low glycemic vegetables Balanced portions of good fats and fruits Most will fluctuate in and out of this category with the correct foods Important Supplements: Minerals B Vitamins Essential Fatty Acids Metabolic Type Four Does better with raw foods and juicing Avoid starches and refined foods Essential fatty acids are important Important Supplements: Digestive Enzymes Adrenal supplements Amino Acids Metabolic Type Five Can tolerate a wide variety of foods. Right proteins are essential Are prone to hypoglycemia and should stay away from sugar and refined foods Important Supplements: Anti-oxidants Trace minerals Decongestants 15

Metabolic Type Six Very poor metabolizers. Need the majority of their food cooked. Require heavy supplementation. Need whole, unrefined foods. Important Supplements: Digestive Stimulants Essential Fatty Acids Immune Support Metabolic Type Seven Very inefficient metabolizers. Need whole, natural foods. Should avoid all processed and refined foods. Detoxification is extremely important. Important Supplements Lymphatic cleansers Liver cleansers Fiber Increase Your Value By using blood analysis, you are able to consult via phone, Facetime or Skype You will have an in-depth picture of the person s weak links and how to reveal different layers Streamline your supplement suggestions Create a personalized nutritional profile Present underlying emotional issues affecting health symptoms 16
