Hill Scholarship, McGill University, $12,000 Governor General s Award, DC High School Research Interests Broadly speaking, I am interested in how individuals make decisions within collective contexts. Employing a social-cognitive approach, my research examines how decisions in groups and organizations are influenced by the manner in which individuals define themselves in relation to their collectives. Under this rubric, I have developed the Normative Conflict Model of dissent within social groups (Packer, PSPR, in press), which predicts the conditions under which strongly identified group members may choose not to comply, but rather to challenge group norms. My research also examines the cognitive and neural underpinnings of identity (e.g., Packer & Cunningham, in prep), as well as the consequences of identity processes for intergroup relations (e.g., Packer & Chasteen, 2006).
