Abstract of thesis presented to the Senate of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master o f Science (Aquaculture) EFFECT OF SALINITY ON THE INGESTION RATE OF ARTEM IA FED W ITH Chlorella sp. AND Nannochloropsis sp. C hairperson : Associate Professor Zaleha Binti Kassim, Ph.D. Institute of Tropical A quaculture (AKUATROP) Artemia is an important live food organism for intensive culture as first feeding for aquatic larvae before the larvae can be weaned onto artificially diets mainly due to their convenience and availability. This study was designed in order to see the effects of salinity on the ingestion rates of Artemia as well as the survival rates. In this study, three different salinities are tested; 30, 20 and 10 ppt and for each of the salinity treatments, Artemia are fed with two different microalgae; Chlorella sp. and Nannochloropsis sp. in order to evaluate the effect of different salinities on ingestion and survival of the Artemia. The experiment was carried out from newly hatched nauplii up to adult stage. The three salinities tested were significantly affects Artemia survival were the differences were significant at p=0.00 level (p<0.05). However; there were no effects of salinities on the ingestion rates. The difference in ingestion between tested water salinities were not significant at 0.13 level (p<0.05). Ingestion of Artemia was influenced by the microalgae given where the Artemia fed on Nannochloropsis sp. have better ingestion compared to Artemia fed on Chlorella sp.. The differences of ingestion were significant at p=0.00 level (p<0.05) for Artemia cultured in 30 and 20 ppt while p=0.02 level (p<0.05) for Artemia cultured in 10 ppt. In short, it is concluded that the different salinities can affect the survival of Artemia during the development stages but not affect the ingestion rates.

Abstrak tesis yang dikemukan kepada Senat Universiti Malaysia Terengganu sebagai memenuhi keperluan untuk ijazah Saijana Sains (Akuakultur) KESAN KEMASINAN KE ATAS KADAR PENGAMBILAN MAKANAN OLEH ARTEM IA YANG DIBERI MAKAN Chlorella sp. DAN Nannochloropsis sp. Supervisor : Profesor M adya Zaleha Binti Kassim, Ph.D. Institut A kuakultur Tropika (AKUATROP) Artemia merupakan organisma makanan hidup yang penting untuk temakan intensif sebagai asuhan pertama untuk larva akuatik sebelum larva beralih kepada makanan buatan. Kajian in direka bentuk untuk melihat kesan kemasinan pada kadar pengambilan pemakanan Artemia serta kadar kelansungan hidup. Dalam kajian ini, tiga tahap kemasinan yang berbeza diuji; 30, 20 dan 10 ppt dan bagi setiap rawatan kemasinan, Artemia diberi makan dengan dua jenis mikroalga iaitu Chlorella sp. dan Nannochloropsis sp. untuk menilai kesan kemasinan yang berbeza pada pemakanan dan kelansungan hidup Artemia. Kajian telah dijalankan dari peringkat nauplii yang baru menetas sehingga peringkat dewasa. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa Artemia mempunyai kemandirian yang tertinggi dalam kemasinan 30 ppt. Ketiga-tiga saliniti yang diuji memberi kesan yang signifikan pada kelansungan hidup Artemia dengan nilai p=0.00 (p<0.05). Walaubagaimanapun, tiada kesan kemasinan yang dapat dilihat pada kadar pengambilan makanan. Kadar pengambilan makanan oleh Artemia telah dipengaruhi oleh mikroalga yang diberikan. Perbezaan kadar pemakanan di antara saliniti-saliniti yang diuji adalah tidak signifikan dengan nilai p=0.13 (p>0.05). Artemia yang diberi makan dengan Nannochloropsis sp. mempunyai kadar pengambilan makanan yang lebih baik berbanding Artemia yang diberi makan Chlorella sp. Perbezaan kadar pemakanan Artemia yang dikultur dalam 30 dan 20 ppt adalah signifikan dengan nilai p=0.00 (p<0.05) dan p=0.02 (p<0.05) untuk Artemia yang dikultur dalam 10 ppt. Kesimpulannya, dapat ditunjukkan bahawa kemasinan yang berbeza boleh menjejaskan kelansungan hidup Artemia semasa peringkat tumbesaran tetapi tidak memberi kesan kepada kadar pengambilan makanan.
