Preventol A 5-S Product Information io
Use For the formulation of solvent-based wood preservatives, anti-blue-stain agents, primers and wood stains. For the formulation of other non-aqueous fungicidal, algaecidal and antifouling coatings. Chemical and physical data Common name: Chemical name: Description: Tolylfluanid N-dichlorofluoromethylthio-N,N -dimethyl-n-p-tolyl-sulphamide almost white powder Specification* Assay (HPLC): min. 96.0 % Water (according to NIR): max. 1.0 % Parcticle size < 10 µm: max. 6.0 % (according to Malvern/Sympatec) Dry sifting > 500 µm: max. 1.0 % Characteristic data** Bulk density: approx. 800 g/l (loose) Vapour pressure: (20 C): approx. 2x10-6 hpa (50 C): approx. 10-4 mbar Melting point: approx. 93 C Ignition temperature: approx. 380 C (DIN 51794) Solubility of active ingredient at 10 C 20 C 40 C in % by wt.: ethyl acetate 24 30 49 xylene 20 22 38 Shellsol AB 10 12 28 Solvesso 100 9 18 31 white spirit* 1 1.5 4 water insoluble and incompatible * aromatic content 30% (calculated as xylene) Preventol A 5-S contains traces of insoluble inert material (approx. 1 %). If necessary the inert material can be separated by filtration or sedimentation when formulating varnishes and other non-pigmented wood coatings. Stability Preventol A 5-S hydrolyses in aqueous solutions and is incompatible with alkalis and amines. Preventol A 5-S has good thermal stability so that there is no risk involved when the product is dissolved at elevated temperatures in the above solvents or in drying oils or solvent-based binders. Preventol A 5-S has no adverse effect on the properties of coatings even when subjected to long-term outdoor exposure. * Specification values are subject to constant monitoring. Only data given in the current edition of the Specification are binding. ** Characteristic data provide further information about the product and are not subject to constant monitoring. They are therefore not binding.
Storage If correctly stored and kept in the original sealed container, the shelf life is 1 year. The product tends to form lumps. Spectrum of activity Preventol A 5-S has a broad spectrum of activity covering fungi which destroy coatings, including mercury-resistant Penicillium species, as well as algae. It is particularly effective against wood-staining fungi (blue stain, mould). As Preventol A 5-S is virtually insoluble in water and nonvolatile, the fungicidal effect of coatings containing this substance lasts for many years. Formulations containing Preventol A 5-S are generally colour-fast, although this should be tested in each individual case. Preventol A 5-S can also prevent secondary infection (mould formation on a dirt layer adhering to the substrate). Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) in mg tolylfluanid/l in nutrient agar Alternaria tenuis 10 Cladosporium herbarum 10 Aspergillus niger 20 Coniophora puteana 10 Aureobasidium pullulans 10 Lentinus tigrinus 5 Ceratocystis coerulescens 20 Penicillium glaucum 20 Ceratocystis pini 20 Poria vaporaria 2 Chaetomium globosum 10 Preventol A 5-S is not only effective against sessile sea organisms but also against fresh water and sea water algae. Preventol A 5-S is becoming increasingly popular as an active ingredient in marine antifouling coatings as it is less ecotoxic than the organotin compounds which are still widely used. Application Preventol A 5-S can be incorporated into a formulation predissolved in a suitable solvent or in a heated binder. In the case of pigmented coatings it may be added with the pigments and fillers. Preventol A 5-S is compatible with drying oils and coating binders and has no effect on the drying of a coating. It can be combined with all driers except lead. A combination of calcium, zircon and manganese with a little cobalt has proved to be a good drier. It is essential to carry out preliminary tests to determine compatibility, especially in the case of lead driers. For extended wood protection, which includes both protection against wood destroying fungi and anti-bluestain efficacy, combinations of Preventol A 5-S and Preventol A 8 have shown excellent performance. In addition, Preventol A 5-S has good compatibility with insecticides, e.g. cyfluthrin (Preventol HS 12 or Preventol HS 11). For antifouling coatings, a combination of Preventol A 5-S and copper oxide is particularly suitable.
Suggested additions of Preventol A 5-S Wood stains and impregnating agents with low binder content for protection against blue stain fungi: 0.4 0.7 %, calculated on ready-to-use formulation Solvent-based coatings: 1.5 2.5 %, calculated on film weight In cases where infestation is expected to be low, 75 % of the suggested addition is sufficient. Marine antifouling paints: 2.5 10 %, calculated on total formulation Preventol A 5-S is not phytotoxic. Wood preservatives and coatings containing Preventol A 5-S can therefore be used on objects which may come into contact with plants after drying. A heavily infested substrate should be cleaned before a coating is applied. Registration / Approval / Recommendation Main chemical registrations exist in Germany and EU: EC-No. (EINECS) 211-986-9 (Tolylfluanid) Canada: CEPA/DSL listed Switzerland: BAG.T No. 54191 (poison class 4) Australia: AICS listed (Tolylfluanid) Up-to-date information on the current status of registration and approval for our products can be obtained from : Bayer AG Business Group Specialty Products Business Unit Material Protection 51368 Leverkusen / Germany Fax: (02 14) 30-62995 Precautions Preventol A 5-S is a fine powder. Skin contact and dust inhalation should be avoided. The precautions generally recommended for handling chemicals should be observed, e.g. wearing of safety goggles, protective gloves and dust-mask. If the product comes into contact with the skin, the affected area should be washed immediately with soap and plenty of water; splashes in the eyes should be rinsed out immediately with plenty of water. If irritation persists, medical attention should be obtained. Contaminated clothing should be changed immediately. The active ingredient tolylfluanid has been examined by the former German Federal Health Office (BGA) (now: BgVV) with regard to its health properties and has been approved for use in wood preservatives (letter from the German Federal Health Office of June 7th, 1990 to Bayer AG). Regarding the general use of wood preservatives and coatings containing biocides we should like to point out the following: Wood preservatives contain biocidal active ingredients to protect wood against pests. They must be applied according to the instructions for use and only in those cases where protective measures are necessary and where they pose no practical risk to man. They should not generally be used in living or recreational areas, or at least should only be applied to a very small surface area and in amounts not exceeding the minimum necessary. They must not be applied to wood which is likely to come into prolonged contact with the skin or to wood which comes into direct contact with foodstuffs. For remedial wood treatment, wood preservatives should be used indoors exclusively on constructional timber and should be applied by professionals only. Treated timber has to be covered to prevent dust discharges into living or recreational areas. Do not breath in product fumes or aerosols. Effective ventilation must be provided during and after the use of wood preservatives. Eating, drinking and smoking must be prohibited during work. The same applies to coatings containing biocides. The current safety data sheet should be observed. This contains further information on labelling, transport and storage as well as information on handling, product safety, toxicity and ecology. Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use.
Toxicity and Labelling Acute Toxicity: LD 50 oral, rat: > 5000 mg/kg dermal, rat: > 5000 mg/kg LC50 inhalation, rat: > 1038 mg/m 3 (4 h exposure with Preventol A 5-S/Tolylfluanid techn. as aerosol) The product Preventol A 5-S is classified as toxic (T) and dangerous for the environment (N). Harzard description and R-phrases: R 23: Toxic by inhalation. R 36/37/38: Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. R 43: May cause sensitization by skin contact.
