The fall season is almost here and I am looking forward to better weather and some football. I am honored to serve as President of the FES Myakka Chapter along with our new officers: Vice President: Millard Yoder, P.E., Secretary: Carlyn O Rielly, P.E., Treasurer: James Jackson, E.I., and State Director: Scott Parrish, P.E. I am looking forward to working with our Officers and our members. One of our goals for the upcoming year and going forward is to encourage our members to get involved and to participate in the events and luncheons. We have our first luncheon scheduled for September 11, 2013 at the Holiday Inn Lakewood Ranch, with a Guest Speaker, Jon Thaxton, Director of Community Investment of Gulf Coast Community Foundation. In October we have our Annual Golf Tournament on October 18, 2013 at University Country Club, which is the source of our scholarship funding. We need our members support and sponsorships, so please sign up for these events and let us have another successful Golf Tournament this year! Another event that is already scheduled for February 7, 2014 is MATHCOUNTS. We depend on our members for the funding of this event and appreciate your generous donations. Also, if you would like to volunteer at this exciting event, please let us know, we can use your help. This is a fantastic event and volunteering would be most rewarding, as you see your Chapter at work within the local community. Thank you, Robert Gomez, P.E. 1
NOTE OF THANKS The Myakka Chapter of FES awarded five scholarships to local graduating High School Seniors who plan to obtain an engineering degree. One $1000 scholarship, two $750 scholarships and two $500 scholarships were presented to Ian Hull and Remy Hanewinckel of Pine View School, Robert Hicks of Manatee High School, Derek Nickell from Venice High School and Alex Hughes of Riverview High School. Presentations were made by Myakka Chapter members at the respective Senior Awards ceremonies. The winners were selected from numerous applicants from Sarasota, Manatee and Desoto Counties. Funds for the scholarships were raised through the Myakka Chapter Golf Tournament last October. Thank you to all individuals and businesses that made the tournament a success and the scholarships possible. The scholarship program is yet another way to promote the engineering profession in our schools and to the community. We look forward to your continued support for this year s tournament scheduled for October 18, 2013. Without your continued support, this community outreach would not be possible. Congratulations to all scholarship recipients and good luck in your endeavor to pursue an engineering profession. 2
