What is a Second Opinion? Call our Nurses and Physicians at 1-855-366-7700 www.mycancerbridge.com Making decisions about healthcare is one of the most important in a person s life. Many people are told that they have cancer or another life threatening illness and feel that they must make a decision to begin treatment immediately. This may be true in some cases but taking the time to learn about your disease and obtaining a second opinion is actually very reasonable. Proactive decision making will give you a greater degree of control over your treatment so that you can make a more informed decision. Most doctors will welcome another physician s input. Your doctor may even be able to recommend a specialist. A good doctor understands your right to be well informed and should support a second opinion. Not every doctor will have the same opinion with regard to diseases and possible treatments. Factors which may have an effect on a doctor s opinion are the technology available to that doctor, school of thought, where they were trained, individual methods of treatment and experience in dealing with that particular diagnosis. It never hurts to get a second opinion. Keep in mind that doctors are human and they too can make mistakes or be faced with unusual or challenging cases. When the first doctor s opinion is the same or similar to the second doctor s, your confidence will be increased. There is nothing lost by visiting one more doctor just to make sure that the first doctor s opinion is correct. What do I need to gather for a second opinion appointment? Most physicians will require the patient to make an appointment and have an examination for a second opinion; they will not just give an opinion by reviewing records. Be sure to arrive with contact information about the first physician, insurance card, list of prescribed medications and allergies. Most physicians will also require you to bring your medical records which would include your pathology report and any other diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays that were done at the time of you cancer diagnosis. If able, it would also be good to get a copy of the initial consultation and treatment recommendations. Will my insurance cover a second opinion? Call your insurance provider before scheduling a second opinion appointment to prevent any confusion or denial of the bill. You need to know exactly what will be covered, such as an out of network provider, any lab work or testing that may be required. Diagnostic tests can be very costly and many insurance providers will not pay for them if they were completed for the initial diagnosis. If you have coverage through Medicare, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or for specific rules by state for a second opinion you can visit http://www.medicare.gov/coverage/home.asp Additional resources available at: www.patientadvocate.org 3700 Fishinger Boulevard Hilliard, OH 43026 614-984-2033 Office Disclaimer: CancerBridge provides information specific to cancer inquiries, expert cancer navigation, and insights into treatment options. Call our Nurses and Physicians at 1-855-366-7700 Preparing for you first appointment with a cancer specialist (oncologist) www.mycancerbridge.com Learning you have cancer can be a shock and you may feel overwhelmed. Many times, patients do not know what to ask either at the time of diagnosis or when deciding on a treatment plan. Below are some suggested questions for you to ask as you learn more about your cancer. Preparing for your first visit Here are some other helpful suggestions as you prepare for your first appointment with your oncologist or surgeon: Write down questions you may have. This will give you a plan on where to start in your conversation with the physician. Don t be afraid to write down information during your appointment. This will help you remember what the physician is telling you. Ask if there is a nurse or a navigator available to provide you with locating additional local support services. Questions to ask your doctor about your cancer diagnosis 1. What type of cancer do I have? 2. What is the stage of my cancer and what does that mean? 3. Has my cancer spread to other areas of my body? How serious is my cancer? 4. Is my cancer curable or will the treatments control my cancer? 5. What are my chances for survival? 6. Should I get a second opinion? Questions about Cancer Treatment 1. How will my cancer be treated? What is the goal of my treatment? 2. What treatments do you recommend? 3. What tests will I need before my treatment begins? 4. Which physician will help me decide what treatment is best? 5. What is the goal of my cancer treatment? 6. Where will I get my treatment? Do I have to be hospitalized? 7. Would a clinical trial be an option? 8. What are the side effects of treatment? 9. Can I work during treatment? Many patients find it helpful to maintain a file that contains copies of information, test results to have a history of their cancer care and treatment. Continue to write down questions and bring them with you to each appointment. Don t be afraid to ask for help if you or your family is having difficulty coping with the cancer diagnosis or treatment. 3700 Fishinger Street Hilliard, OH 43026 614-984-2033 Office
