PILATES TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM Harmony Pilates Studio offers in-depth and comprehensive learning for the developing Pilates Professional. Our program s outstanding reputation has been built over a period of many years, having educated some of the region s most successful instructors. The Harmony Pilates Studio directors, Dilla Mastrangelo and Sueann Fenchel, both Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) Certified Pilates Teachers (PMA-CPTs ), each have more than 20 years of longevity in the field. They are known for their detailed approach and positive coaching style. Harmony s program is true to the principles and exercises of Joseph Pilates while integrating recent advances in the field of movement education. Format Beginning in 2017, Harmony will offer a two-module teacher training program format. This is designed for students interested in becoming trained in Mat/Reformer only (approximately 6-9 months), as well as those seeking full comprehensive training with eligibility to become a Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher. (12-16 months). Module 1 Mat/Reformer Four Seminars Module 1 involves four, 3-day seminars designed to progressively advance the student s personal practice and teaching competence in the area of movement fundamentals and the original Pilates level 1-4 Mat and Reformer exercise sequences. Each student will recruit a volunteer to teach for 2 hrs during the seminar weekend. Relevant topics include: The History of Pilates Functional Anatomy Teaching Theory and Application Verbal and Tactile Cueing Techniques Program Development for Individual Clients Common Pathologies and Suggested Modifications and Precautions Prerequisites As self-mastery is an essential part of developing oneself as a teacher, students must take a minimum number of private lessons with an experienced instructor prior to and during Page 1 of 5
enrollment in our program. Please note that the number of lessons listed below is considered the minimum. We encourage students to take more lessons and group classes in order to achieve higher levels of proficiency, if possible. 30 private lessons: 15 prior to starting the program 15 lessons between Seminars 1 and 4 *5 of those 15 will be with one of the Educators (Dilla, Sueann, Tamar, Kris or Lesley) Personal Practice Students will also practice on their own and document those hours independently. It is suggested that students acquire special permission to practice in a local studio or consider purchasing their own Reformer. The total personal practice requirement for Module 1 is 90 hours. Observation/Apprenticeship Students will gain practical experience by observing experienced teachers at either Harmony Pilates Studio or at another approved studio under the guidance of comprehensive or PMA-CPTs. 15 hours of watching approved on-line workshops from the Pilates Anytime website may be counted toward the total 40 hours of observation required. Practice Teaching In order to complete Module 1, students must complete 60 hours of teaching volunteer clients (family and friends) in order to gain practical experience cueing, spotting and developing lessons for a variety of individuals. For the safety of volunteer clients, students are limited to teaching only the material covered in the workshops they have completed. Anatomy Applied Anatomy will be integral to every Module 1 seminar. In order for the student to be adequately prepared, a large component of anatomy learning will be done independently in advance through the use of online tutorials, required reading, and working though the Anatomy Coloring Book. Students will take a short anatomy pre-test on the first day of every seminar related to the assignments given. If the student scores lower than 100%, they can use the remainder of the weekend to correct their answers. Required Texts Anatomy Coloring Book by Wynn Kapit/Lawrence M. Certificate of Completion Students will receive a certificate of completion once they have met all of the requirements outlined, demonstrated proficiency in performing a full Level 3 Mat sequence as well as Level 3 Reformer without notes or prompts, and passed a written test with a minimum score of 80%. Module 2 Chair, Cadillac, Auxiliary to Complete Comprehensive Two Seminars Module 2 involves two, 2-day seminars covering Level 1-4 exercises on the Pilates Chair, Trapeze Table (Cadillac), Barrels, Ped-a-Pull and Magic Circle. Prerequisites and Personal Practice Student will complete Module 1 before entering Module 2 and in addition will further their knowledge of the Chair, Cadillac, and Auxiliary Equipment repertoire by taking private lessons in advance of the first seminar. In addition 50 more hours of personal practice is required. 15 private lessons: 7 prior to starting Module 2, Weekend 1 8 lessons between seminar weekends Observation/Apprenticeship Students in Module 2 continue to deepen their understanding of the Pilates Method by observing experienced teachers at either Harmony Pilates Studio or at another approved studio under the guidance of comprehensive or PMA-CPTs. 15 hours of viewing approved on-line workshops from the Pilates Anytime website may be counted toward the total 30 required hours. Practice Teaching In order to complete Module 2, students must complete 40 more hours of teaching volunteer clients (family and friends) using the Chair, Cadillac and Auxiliary equipment. For the safety of volunteer clients, students are limited to teaching only the material covered in the workshops they have completed. Final Testing After a student has completed all of the required coursework and hours in both modules, they can arrange to take the final examination. The final exam has a written portion, which tests their knowledge of the exercises and relevant anatomy, as well as a practical portion that assesses competence as an entry-level teacher. The practical examination is pass/fail and the written examination requires a minimum score of 80% to pass. Page 3 of 5

This completed scope of study meets national guidelines required to sit for the National Pilates Certification Examination established in 2005 through the Pilates Method Alliance. Once your application is received, we will email your written confirmation of payment along with other necessary details for attending the seminar.
