Our Place is associated with the non-profit organization Mental Health America of SC, and is a day program for adults who have been diagnosed with a mental illness. Their mission is to help people with mental illness enrich their goals of living independently, learn new coping skills, and continue with their recovery journey. Andrew discussed the schedule, activities, and the different groups offered at Our Place Clubhouse. He also stated Medicaid Transportation (Logisticare) is available and it is free. MYRTLE BEACH AREA FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP First Thursday of the Month Family Support Summer Schedule: June 2 nd, July 7 th, and August 4 th : 6-8 PM Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church 1100 8 th Avenue North North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582 Facilitators: Ken and Karen (843-281-0245) The Family Support Group is comprised of adults (caregivers, relatives, friends, etc.) who are concerned about loved ones who suffer from mental illness (i.e., depression, anxiety, psychosis, schizophrenia, etc.). We share ideas and discuss ways and means to help our loved ones and each other. MAY EDUCATIONAL SPEAKER Mr. Andrew Frankel, Clinical Program Chelsea Rzepkowski Andrew Frankel Chelsea, pictured above with Andrew, is a NAMI Connections Leader. She is also an MUSC student in their Master of Health Administration program. As part of her studies, she and others interviewed him at Our Place Clubhouse and reported facts concerning their program. We appreciate Andrew introducing us to Our Place Clubhouse and helping us realize what an important resource we have available in Charleston. NAMI Charleston Area June, July, August, 2016 Page 3 Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) This is a call asking for volunteers to sign up for the remaining CIT Training Sessions at the Charleston County Sheriff s Office. The dates are June 16 & 17, August 18 & 19, October 6 & 7 and December 8 & 9. The training sessions are held at the CCSO, corner of Leeds Ave and Azalea Dr., N. Charleston. The parking lot entrance is off of Azalea Dr. pay discount too. Please see flyer on page 4. NAMI Charleston Area Picnic Good food, fellowship, and fun were had at the NAMI picnic in May at the Riverfront Park in North Charleston. Here are a few pictures. The Thursday session (8:30 to 11:30 am) is titled Faces - NAMI. We present our stories and answer questions related to our presentation. The Friday session (8:30 to Noon) is a practicum for the officers. We are role players using scenarios provided by NAMI South Carolina. NAMI Charleston Area pays for lunch at the East Bay Deli (Dorchester & Leeds Aves) after the training on Friday. MUSC Project Rex: Siblings Support Group Enrollment is now open for Project Rex Sibling Support Group. This group is for individuals ages 8-14 with a sibling on the autism spectrum! More information can be found at the Groups page on the Project Rex website. All Groups are covered 100% by Medicaid, with most private insurance accepted and a self-
