Medicatin Instructins 7 DAYS BEFORE PROCEDURE: Discntinue taking Phentermine and Hydrxycut. 5 DAYS BEFORE PROCEDURE: Discntinue taking medicines that may thin yur bld, such as: COUMADIN, PLAVIX, TICLID, Heparin, Aspirin, Excedrin, Effient, Alka Seltzer, Empirin, Ectrin, Bufferin, Ascriptin, Ibuprfen, Mtrin, Advil, Medipren, Nuprin, Naprxen (Naprsyn), Aleve, Sulindac, Clinril, Pirxicam, Feldene, Indmethacin, Indcin, Diclfenac and Vltaren unless therwise directed by yur physician. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR DIABETIC PATIENTS Check yur bld glucse during the preparatin perid, especially if yu suspect it is t lw. Yur bld glucse levels may run higher than usual during this perid due t adjustments in yur diabetes medicatin. If bld glucse becmes extremely high (greater than 350), call ur ffice, yur PCP r yur diabetes dctr. Fr lw bld glucse levels, yu may drink sweetened clear liquids (such as apple juice). Diabetic Instructins If yu are diabetic and having an EGD, fllw these instructins: ORAL DIABETES MEDICATIONS If yu take ral diabetic medicatins, please hld these medicatins the mrning f yur EGD. Restart these medicatins after the prcedure when yu resume eating. INSULIN If yu take insulin f any type, fllw these guidelines: Lantus r Levmir Take yur usual dse unless yur bld glucse is tightly cntrlled (glucse levels are usually in the nrmal range r are ccasinally lw). In that case, reduce the dsage by ne frth n the day befre yur EGD. Resume yur usual dse after the prcedure. EGD (Esphaggastrdudenscpy) Infrmatin Esphaggastrdudenscpy, als knwn as an upper endscpy, enables the physician t lk inside the esphagus, stmach, and dudenum (the first part f the small intestine). The prcedure might be used t discver and pssibly treat the reasn fr swallwing difficulties, nausea, vmiting, reflux, bleeding, indigestin, abdminal pain, r chest pain. A thin, flexible, lighted tube called an endscpe will be used fr the prcedure. Right befre the prcedure the physician will spray yur thrat with a numbing agent that may help prevent gagging. Yu will receive medicine t sedate yu during the exam. The endscpe transmits an image inside f the esphagus, stmach, and dudenum s the physician can examine the lining f these rgans. The scpe als blws air int the stmach; this expands the flds f tissue and makes it easier fr the physician t examine the stmach. The physician can see abnrmalities, like ulcers, thrugh the endscpe that desn t shw up well n x rays. The physician can als insert instruments int the scpe t remve samples f tissue (bipsy) fr further tests. The physician can als use instruments t stp bleeding. Yur stmach and dudenum must be empty fr the prcedure t be thrugh and safe. Please see the EGD preparatin instructins fr cmplete details. Yu may resume yur nrmal diet after the prcedure, unless advised therwise. The prcedure takes 5 20 minutes; hwever, yu shuld be prepared t be at the hspital r endscpy center fr 2 t 2 ½hurs. Yu must have a respnsible driver with yu at all times while yu are at the endscpy center/hspital. The day after the prcedure, yu may return t wrk r yur nrmal activities. If bipsies were taken during the prcedure, we nrmally receive the results f the test within 7 10 business days. After a dctr reviews the reprt, the clinical will call r mail yu a letter with the results and his instructins.
