ABOUT THE POSITION Site Leaders make alternative breaks possible-they develop projects with community partners, facilitate participants through the group process, encourage and foster full participation, prepare participants with knowledge and skills to use in the community, and guide reflection and critical thinking during the alternative break as participants integrate the experience into their lives. Site Leaders will build collective action with their team and those in their host community. The experience is intensive, but immensely gratifying. Site Leaders prepare for the experience through required meetings with the Henderson Alternative Breaks Program Coordinators and Staff Advisors. Please note, while arranging your schedule, that meetings are mandatory and full participation is required as part of the position. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Commitment to community engagement, Henderson Alternative Breaks mission and vision Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Interest and willingness to learn about the social issue addressed by your alternative break Interest in working with the Program Coordinator in a collaborative style Ability to make the required time commitment to the program, including mandatory fundraisers, trainings and meetings o Effective leadership takes time and energy. Involvement in this program requires an ongoing commitment throughout the year. We want your involvement in this program to be an enhancement to your well-being and not a contribution to unhealthy overcommitment. Please consider carefully if participating in this program is sustainable with your other priorities. Commitment to substance-free policy throughout the alternative break experience RESPONSIBILITIES Site Leaders have many responsibilities beyond their peers as trip participants. Before the trip: Attend mandatory Site Leader trainings and meetings and all fundraisers Communicate with the host site and lodging contacts before trip to plan quality issue education, direct service opportunities, and finalize logistics Communicate and work regularly with the HAB Coordinator, Staff Advisor and your team Coordinate an itinerary for your service trip in collaboration with your community partner Engage, plan, and facilitate group meetings of HAB participants Plan your trip budget Assist with participant recruitment During the trip: Work in coordination with community partner on all service activities Manage a trip budget and finances Communicate with your team and build a group dynamic Facilitate reflection and ongoing education activities daily
Manage travel arrangements After the trip: Plan post-break reorientation, including meetings, activities, and advocacy for your team Attend post-trip advising meetings with Coordinator Assist in recruiting participants to be Site Leaders REQUIRED ATTENDANCE Site Leaders are required to attend all events below. ALCOHOL AND ILLEGAL DRUG POLICY Alternative Breaks has a no alcohol or illegal drugs* policy. This prohibits being under the influence of or consuming alcohol or illegal drugs,* or purchase of any alcohol or illegal drug paraphernalia during any Alternative Breaks sponsored activity including, but not limited to: prebreak meetings, Alternative Breaks group activities, group fundraisers, travel to and from Alternative Breaks sites, and for the duration of Alternative Breaks trips. This policy also includes the purchase of alcohol or illegal drugs*, with or without consumption, during Alternative Breaks trips. Drinking or use of illegal drugs* during the break represents a major liability to yourself, your fellow participants, the AB program, and Henderson State University, and is inappropriate while dealing with the social issues of Alternative Breaks sites. Support of this policy by all involved is essential to a safe and socially aware Alternative Break. Violation of this policy will result in participants being sent home from their Alternative Breaks trip and returning home at their own expense. No refunds will be awarded. In addition, travel expenses already purchased in the participant s name must be paid back in full. Violators of this policy may be restricted from further participation in Alternative Breaks activities or trips. Participants will also be held in accountable to University policies regarding alcohol or illegal drug use. *Illegal drugs are defined as drugs that are illegal within the United States and/or the country in which you are. I agree to follow the guidelines and policies of Alternative Breaks as outlined above.
