This year s program will focus on the latest breakthroughs and recommendations for the evaluation and management of asthma, COPD, angioedema, and gluten enteropathies. All course content will be aligned with the Clinical Competencies of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology as well as the Practice Guidelines of the NIH and the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology. Practice Gap Summary / Needs Assessment Asthma affects up to 22 million people in the U.S. and can be a life-threatening condition resulting in several thousand deaths per year. Exacerbations of asthma are commonly seen in emergency departments and primary care offices. Asthma is often unrecognized or undertreated by emergency and primary care physicians. In addition, significant co-morbid conditions that complicate upper airway diseases and asthma often go unrecognized, as gastroesophageal reflux, sleep apnea, and viral infections often complicate the evaluation and treatment of upper and lower airway diseases. Fiberoptic rhinoscopy is a useful tool to help identify some of these comorbid conditions. Recognition of these comorbidities is essential to effective management of patients with persistent asthma. There has been concern regarding whether LABA (long acting beta agonist) treatment increases severity of asthma exacerbations and possibly increases the risk of fatal asthma. These concerns have resulted in a black box warning from the FDA. Addition of a LABA may decrease the frequency of asthma episodes and severity of symptoms; however, a LABA may also make asthma episodes more severe when they occur. Confusion exists in the primary care community over the role and safety of LABAs in asthma treatment. COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is one of the most common lung diseases and is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S., with smoking as the main cause. In rare cases, nonsmokers who lack a protein called alpha-1 antitrypsin can develop emphysema. Physicians must be able to identify and implement appropriate treatments for relieving symptoms and stopping the progression of COPD. They must also be able to recognize when the care of a specialist is needed. A growing portion of celiac disease diagnoses are being made in asymptomatic persons as a result of increased screening. Celiac disease is thought to affect between 1 in 1,750 and 1 in 105 people in the U.S. With the increase in number of celiac cases diagnosed in recent years, there is a need for heightened competence among primary care professionals regarding this condition and how to differentiate it from food allergy. Target Audience This program is designed to meet the educational needs of Primary Care Physicians, Pediatricians, Emergency Department Physicians, Allergy/Immunology Specialists, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Residents, Students and any other healthcare practitioners who treat patients with allergic and immunologic disorders. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to: Recognize and treat comorbid conditions responsible for exacerbations of asthma; Identify the Gold Criteria for classification of COPD and implement effective treatment strategies for this condition; Evaluate potential risks and benefits of adding long-acting bronchodilators to asthma therapy; Differentiate between drug side effects, drug intolerances and drug allergy; Consider the utility of fiberoptic rhinoscopy in identifying comorbidities that exacerbate or mimic asthma; Implement new therapeutic strategies available to treat angioedema; and Differentiate between food allergies and food intolerances, such as gluten enteropathies.
