Statements & Search Criteria Mission To ease the burden of everyday life for local families who have a child in treatment for a form of pediatric cancer. Background In 2003, Co-founder and Director, Andie McConnell lived down the street from a family whose child had survived brain cancer. The family shared the struggles of facing a crisis of this kind and how alone they felt over the course of their child's treatment. This conversation stuck with Andie and when, 6 years later, she learned that the daughter of an acquaintance was diagnosed with brain cancer, she felt compelled to help this woman and her family. Over time, the mom and Andie became friends, giving insight into the life of a family facing pediatric cancer; the change in routine and finances, the struggles, the worries, the difficulty of keeping up with everyday life and the heartache. Seeing this made her want to do more for these mothers and fathers as they faced the unthinkable. In 2011, Andie and professional photographer, Stephanie Johnson, joined forces and began what is known as Fairy Godmother Project. Today, along with numerous volunteers, FGP provides services to families in Fredericksburg and Richmond, VA, and soon in Southern Maryland. Impact Top accomplishments from the last year: 1.Opened a new chapter in Southern Maryland, in addition to our Richmond and Fredericksburg chapters. 2. Developed a meal making program funded by a $10,000 Walmart grant received at the end of 2012. The program provides opportunities for community members to get involved, provides meals for families when in crisis and provides additional meals for the families we support when volunteers are unable to deliver. 3.Supported families through treatment and end of life. Goals for current year: 1.Provide support to 8 additional families over the course of the next year 2.Develop partnerships within the community that will help increase our services, funding and secure grants 3. Secure additional funding to grow and continue our meal making program in order to support more families and involve additional volunteers 4.Develop a strategic plan Needs Top 5 most pressing needs: 1.Partnerships with businesses in the community to help provide services for our families 2.Volunteers to help with all aspects of FGP 3.Funding 4.Marketing in the community 5.Professional photographers for our photography program Areas Of Service Areas Served Areas Other We presently support families in the Richmond area but have discontinued active fundraising.
