Equal Lives is the largest Disabled People s User Led Organisation (DPULO) in the country. Equal Lives work mainly in Norfolk, and are governed by disabled people; the majority of their staff are disabled. Equal Lives offers support with: Welfare benefits and how to challenge decisions Personal Budgets How to make a complaint Mental health, and how to access support Managing finances Accessing peer support Equal Lives also offers advocacy support to disabled people, including those with mental health issues. Their focus is always to assert human rights, dignity and equality. https://equallives.org.uk ASSOCIATION FOR SUFFOLK MUSEUMS The Association for Suffolk Museums works to preserve and promote the county s rich and diverse heritage. It is an independent charity and membership body with four main aims to: Provide leadership for museums in Suffolk Act as the representative for museums in Suffolk Attract and manage resources for the benefit of its members Increase access and learning in museums for the benefit of the people of Suffolk Creative Heritage & Art in Mind is a Lottery funded heritage and arts in mental health project offering arts-based courses across four Suffolk museums. Welcome to the Summer 2017 Recovery College Timetable Dear Students, I d like to offer you a warm, friendly welcome to the Recovery College. Recovery is about people with mental health difficulties having the same opportunities in life as everyone else. It s about being able to get on with your life despite any mental health challenges you may have. The Recovery College offers a relaxed, respectful, and inclusive space where you can: get a better understanding of the things you struggle with learn self-management skills discover things that improve your wellbeing get a chance to meet and connect with other people learn from other people s experiences We pride ourselves on creating inspiring partnerships. All of our courses are written and delivered by people with lived and learned experience of mental health challenges. What is Recovery? A way of learning to live with a mental health condition It is a journey of personal development and discovery towards a new sense of self, of purpose and of wellbeing What is the Recovery College? The Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) Recovery College: Is one of a growing number of colleges across the UK Has been developed jointly by NHS staff and people with lived experience of mental illness Who can attend? Current service users who are 16 or over Anyone who has used secondary mental health services in the past twelve months NHS members of staff Supporters. For example, friends, family, carers and support workers. You can attend the college either with the person that you support or on your own Those working as part of organisations that support people across health and social care Why should I attend the Recovery College? The courses are run in a similar way to any adult education system and are free. There are no tests or assessments All courses have been co-designed and are presented jointly by two tutors, one with learned experience and one with lived experience You can attend with a carer / family member if you feel you need some extra support The courses are a great way to meet new people who can immediately understand where you are coming from How do I enrol? To book onto courses we recommend that you attend an enrolment session at one of the college venues The sessions will include an informal talk on the Recovery College, question and answer session and completing an ILP (Individual Learning Plan). This will involve thinking about what you hope to achieve during your time at the College and selecting courses that are most suitable for you. What courses are available? A wide range of courses are offered to help you develop a greater understanding of yourself and your mental health Our courses fall into four categories: 1. Beginning You are ready to BEGIN your Recovery college journey by attending an introductory course. These courses support your introduction to Recovery and form good foundations for the rest of the courses. 2. Building You have completed the BEGINNINGS of your recovery journey and you are now ready to BUILD on your learning. These courses introduce new ideas and techniques that you can use in your Recovery. 3. Understanding These courses offer more detailed understanding on specific areas of interest. You may choose to do these alongside our BUILDING courses. 4. Growing You have come a long way and now it is time to plan your next steps. These courses help you GROW and prepare for the future. Recovery College courses The following pages will provide more information about each of our courses and where we hold them. :::: Beginning :::: n Introduction to Recovery This one day course will introduce you to the Recovery College. The course covers: An introduction to the concept of Recovery and how the Recovery College can help you on your recovery journey Details of the courses available n Creating an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) This half-day course will support you in completing your Individual Learning Plan (ILP). The course covers: What is an ILP? How can an ILP help my recovery journey? What will my ILP look like? Start work on my ILP :::: Building :::: n Introduction to Mindfulness A four half-day course introduces the background to and practice of mindfulness. The course covers: What is mindfulness? How to recognise our thoughts and feelings How to connect our mind and body n Looking after your Physical Health Either a full day or two half-days focussing on physical health. The course covers: Why people with mental health problems have to take extra care of their physical health How to have your physical health monitored How to have a healthy diet The importance of being active Practical guidance around making small changes Just very informative and also very open. n Wellness Planning Either a four or six half-day course that will enable you to complete a wellness plan. The course covers: Looking at everyday behaviours / activities that help to keep you well How you can make the most of your strengths and resources Thinking about your personal triggers and warning signs and making plans to help yourself Understanding when you might need outside support n Building on Strengths and Abilities A half-day course that encourages you to recognise and value your unique strengths and abilities The course covers: Thinking about yourself in a different way Looking at how you can use your unique qualities in your recovery Identifying a sense of worth and purpose Very well designed workshop, very useful to understand my strength n Five Ways to Wellbeing This half-day course is a creative practical session. No skill or previous craft experience is needed The course covers: An introduction to the Five Ways to Wellbeing How the Five Ways can be used in everyday life. Note: Paint and other craft materials are used in this course so please dress accordingly. I am writing to thank you for the Five Ways to Wellbeing course that I recently attended. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I now have a little book that I can cherish and be proud of as part of my Recovery Journey. n Art, Museums and Wellbeing A one day course held at a local museum offering an opportunity to explore the museum and participate in creative and enjoyable activities. The course covers: Working with museum objects in an imaginative way to help tell your story Developing your knowledge about what goes on in your local museums n Being Me Youth A four half-day course which is aimed at 16-24 year-olds focussing on the journey into adulthood. The course covers: How to create your own adult identity How to become who you are supposed to be, or want to be How relationships and friendships change on the journey to becoming an adult How to make sense of your own experiences NSFT Recovery College Timetable May July 2017 7

n Goal Setting for Recovery A half-day course focussing on how to set achievable goals to improve motivation and make positive change The course covers: How to set recovery-focussed goals Using and setting targets How to make contingency plans for when life happens Has given me the confidence to now go home and achieve a goal I ve been thinking about for months n Spirituality: a Beginner s Guide A half-day course exploring what is understood by spirituality and helping students to define their own personal definition. The course covers: Introducing spirituality and how it relates to recovery in mental health Exploring and understanding a personal definition of spirituality n Compassionate Mind This two half-day course looks at the science behind compassion. The course covers: How to be compassionate Learning skills and practicing exercises to build your compassionate self n ACT on Life This four half-day course may require you to get in touch with some difficult thoughts/ feelings so that you can learn to apply the ACT techniques to yourself. You will not, however, be required to say or do anything with which you are not comfortable. The course covers: Taking a new look at your mental wellbeing Learning new tools which can help you deal with difficult thoughts and feelings The course has been really well presented and was relevant to me. A friendly atmosphere and a really great experience n Everyone has Emotions This half-day course is a gentle way of looking at what we mean by emotions, naming them and identifying how they relate to our behaviours. The course covers: What emotions are and how they relate to our behaviours How to recognise emotions in ourselves and others, and how to deal with them in our daily lives Fantastic warm, approachable tutors who brought the workshop to life 8 NSFT Recovery College Timetable May July 2017

:::: Understanding :::: n Understanding Self-Harm A half-day course for anyone who has experience of self-harm. The course covers: What is self-harm? Why people self-harm Other peoples reactions; helpful and unhelpful introduction to coping strategies Excellent course - well prepared by the tutors, who spoke very well about their own experiences, which helps to make me feel that I am not alone n How to Tell Your Story This three or four half-day course aims to help / guide people who have experienced mental health issues to understand their story. The course covers: How your story can be told How to develop your story How to tell your story in a safe way n Eating for Wellness A half-day course exploring how what we eat can affect our mood, mental health and our overall wellbeing. The course covers: Understanding what a healthy diet is by discussing the nutritional content found in food Exploring how to budget for food Creating a food plan Understanding how a diet affects our mood and mental health n Learning to Live with Anger This four half-day course aims to empower individuals to live with an emotion that can prove life-enhancing when channelled in constructive ways. The course covers: Understanding what triggers anger Identifying the vicious cycles that lead to unhelpful expressions of anger More helpful ways of expressing your anger Helping you move forward with your life by fostering a sense of compassion for yourself and others n Living Well with Hearing Voices This half-day course seeks to understand what is meant by hearing voices, and introduces ways to cope. The course covers: The facts and myths about voice-hearing Sharing experiences about how it feels and how different people manage Living the life you want with voice-hearing NSFT Recovery College Timetable May July 2017 9

n Living Well with Hearing Voices (Youth) This half-day course looks at what is meant by hearing voices, and introduces ways of coping. The course is for young people (16-25) The course covers: The facts and myths of voice-hearing Sharing innovative ways of how young people cope with voice-hearing Learning to live the life you want Learning from each other n What is Psychosis? This half-day course looks at people s different experiences of psychosis and at how they can be inspired and empowered to live fulfilled lives. The course covers: Different views about the causes and experiences of psychosis Sharing recovery stories which inspire and empower Helping other people (like family or carers) understand psychosis so they can be part of your journey It s been very helpful in giving me a better understanding of psychosis n Living Well with Combat-Related, Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD) This two half-day course helps students understand combat-related PTSD and introduces ways to help and empower them to live fulfilled lives. The course covers: Understanding PTSD for the person and family involved Providing new ideas and skills to empower people to cope better Looking at proven techniques like therapies, mindfulness, and working with family dynamics n What is Paranoia? This half-day course helps students to understand psychosis by looking at people s different experiences. The course covers: Different views about the causes and experiences of paranoia Sharing recovery stories to inspire and empower Helping other people (like family, friends, or carers) to understand paranoia so they can be part of the recovery journey n What is Anxiety? This half-day course introduces some of the causes of anxiety and compares different coping and support mechanisms. The course covers: What is anxiety? n Men s Emotional Health This four half-day course helps men learn about looking after their emotional health. The course covers: Better awareness of men s emotional health Learning ways to reduce anxiety, depression and deal with stressful situations Enabling men to have choice and control over their emotions Using techniques from CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) n Exploring Recovery and Dementia This two day course will help you explore the idea of Personal Recovery and Dementia in a positive way using activities and discussion. The course covers: What dementia is, and how it affects our brain, body and mind Introducing the idea of Personal Recovery Exploring how you feel about Personal Recovery and Dementia The challenges that people with other mental health problems face and overcome during Recovery and how we can learn from these Note: If you are worried about your ability to attend this course, or the ability of someone you support, you can contact the Recovery College to discuss. We will try and meet any needs you have to make this possible. The openness and equality of the group was lovely. The peer tutors lived experience was really valuable n Information and Support for those Supporting Others (the Triangle of Care in Action) - previously known as Carers in Recovery This three half-day course could be useful to informal carers/supporters, service users and professionals / employed carers. The course covers: The Triangle of care Confidentiality in recovery Support of carers :::: Growing :::: n ACT on Life Booster This half-day course is for those who have already attended a four-day ACT on Life course. The course covers: Revisiting and practicing ACT techniques Reflecting on the things that have helped or hindered personal practice since the original course n Mindfulness Refresher This half-day course is for those people who have already attended the four day Introduction to Mindfulness course. n Safety Planning A three half-day course which focuses on staying safe. The course covers: Understanding harmful and positive risk Responsibility in dealing with risk Safety behaviour making environments safer to help you recover n Peer Support is it for you? This half-day course introduces you to the role of the Peer Support Worker (PSW). The course covers how a Peer Support Worker: Encourages and motivates others on their recovery journey Is a role model enabling others to find a way forward, living proof that recovery is possible Requires relevant skills and experience and looks at the personal qualities of this role You will also develop an action plan for next steps n Peer Tutoring - is it for You? This half-day course introduces the role of the Peer Tutor. The course covers how a Peer Tutor: Encourages and motivates others on their recovery journey Is a role model enabling others to find a way forward and is living proof that recovery is possible Requires relevant skills and experience. It also identifies the personal qualities of this role. This course offers the opportunity to put these skills into practice. At the end of the course you can find out how to take your next step toward becoming a Peer Tutor n Introduction to Benefits and Employability - - delivered in partnership with Equal Lives This two half-day course give you an overview of benefits and employability. The course covers: the four benefits Jobseeker s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Following the system so you can make progress / achieve your goals Employability skills and planning for your future n Exploring Employability - delivered in partnership with Equal Lives This three half-day course explores employability skills in greater depth.
