Mental Health & Resilience Training Programme September - December 2017 Essential training for people working with children and young people in West Sussex 1

The Training Partnership West Sussex County Council and West Sussex CCGs are funding a two year training programme of mental health awareness and suicide prevention awareness training and workshops. Who is the training for? This training is primarily for staff and volunteers working with children and young people in public-facing settings across West Sussex. Am I eligible to apply for a course? In order to apply for any of these courses you need to meet this criteria: You can attend the entire session(s) You are working or volunteering in West Sussex in the voluntary or public sector You are working directly with young people with emotional and mental health issues Who delivers the training? The lead agency for this initiative is Coastal West Sussex Mind. Supporting the training programme are partners Allsorts Youth Project, Autism Sussex, Change, Grow, Live, Grassroots Suicide Prevention, Joint Diversity, LifeCentre, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and YMCA Downslink Group. 2

Time to Change so far Time to Change West Sussex will build on the work of the national Time to Change movement. The aim of Time to Change is to encourage us all to be more open about our mental health, and to start conversations with those who might need our support. How can you get involved? We ask for a non-refundable fee of 10.00-30.00 per person, per course. This helps towards refreshments and registration costs. Please do not book on a course unless you are certain you can attend, as the courses are very popular and are very heavily subsidised, to reduce the cost to you. In-House Courses We can deliver a funded in-house course at your workplace at a date and time agreeable with you, if you are able to provide a suitable room and manage the course bookings. You can either host the full event or part-host, providing the venue and filling some of the spaces. We can take care of booking the remaining places to fill the course. You can book any one of the courses in this brochure and we also have other workshops available including SafeTALK, Motivational Interviewing, ADHD and more, for in-house bookings. We can be flexible with the date and time as long as we have a trainer available to run your event. 4

September Understanding Sexual Abuse This one-day training is aimed at CYP practitioners* and managers, to assist them to engage effectively with children and young people known to be victims of sexual abuse or exploitation. *For those working with both Primary and Secondary school aged CYP 12.09.17 in Crawley A Short Guide to The Adolescent Brain This half-day training explores the myths and negative stereotypes around teenagers and the teenage brain. You will gain an evidence-based insight into latest research around what goes on in the developing adolescent brain and how it affects the young person s present and future. Mental Ill-Health & Substance Misuse in Young People Under 18 This half-day training will look at identifying mental ill-health and responding more effectively to young people experiencing both mental health and substance use issues. It will also enable participants to become more aware of support pathways and key service providers in the county. 27.09.17 in Chichester 22.09.17 in Worthing 6

October Safer Social Media This two-hour workshop is led by young people who know how important social media is to them but are also aware of the ugly side of it, too. It will encourage you and the young people you live and work with to think more about the impact of social media on everyday life. 07.10.17 in Worthing Talking with Young People about Mental Health Issues On this one-day training you will explore the difficulties around talking with young people about mental health and emotional wellbeing. You will be using a variety of mediums, such as art, music and play. 18.10.17 in Worthing NEW Supporting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Undecided Young People (LGBTU for CYP) In this half-day training, practitioners* will learn ways to make services safer and more LGBTU inclusive by exploring ways of identifying and challenging homophobia, bisexual and transphobia at home, school, college or work. *For practitioners working with both Primary and Secondary school aged CYP 10.10.17 in Worthing - Wait list only 05.12.17 in Crawley Young People and Suicide Prevention On this one-day training we will review current suicide statistics in West Sussex. We will look at triggers and risk factors for young people and suicide, as well as strategies for carers, staff and volunteers, and local services and resources. 19.10.17 in Bognor Regis 7

November NEW Supporting Family & Friends Carers This half-day training is designed for practitioners working with parents and carers of children with mental health and emotional distress issues. The aim of this workshop is to enhance practitioners skills and confidence in talking about mental health issues with parents and carers. 03.11.17 in Horsham Anxiety and Depression in Young People This half-day training will clarify what is happening for young people living with anxiety and depression and how you can respond helpfully. It will be a forum for discussion of individual experiences and shared strategies that we can use when living and working with young people. Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) ASIST is a two-day training for those that work with children and young people, who wish to be able to provide suicide first aid. You will have space to examine your own attitudes about suicide and be able to better understand the needs of a person at risk of suicide, as well as how to use suicide first aid to meet those needs. 15.11.17 & 16.11.17 in Burgess Hill 10.11.17 in Crawley 8

November Building Emotional Resilience in Young People In this half-day training, you will look at ways of helping young people, challenging negative thinking and promoting a more positive outlook. We will learn how to identify and support less resilient young people, help young people deal with difficult situations and people, and know the limits of our own responsibility. 22.11.17 in Littlehampton Bereavement & Loss This half day course explores responses to grief, how children and young people grieve, learn to notice change in behaviour, and how we can respond to the event/disclosure. We will also discuss the role of individuals and communities in supporting bereaved young people and what resources we can access 24.11.17 in Midhurst Attachment, Trauma and Early Brain Development This full day workshop will help you understand the nature of adverse childhood experiences and traumatising events, and how these impact on a child. Practitioners* will explore brain development, and relevance to attachment, attachment styles and how to work with them. We will also cover intervention strategies, including direct work ideas for individual and group work. *For practitioners working with both Primary and Secondary school aged CYP 29.11.17 in Crawley 13.12.17 in Burgess Hill 9

December Living with Self Harm On this half day workshop we will discuss self harm from a young person s perspective, drawing from a collection of stories and poems. We will explore some of the reasons why young people self harm and challenge the myths that surround them. We will also identify what works for a young person, exploring strategies and ways forward to get the right help. 08.12.17 in Littlehampton Youth Mental Health First Aid On this two day course there will be an opportunity to gain knowledge on how to support children and young people experiencing mental health challenges.
