Introduction INTER-AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO POLICY FOR DIRECT AND INDIRECT SUPERVISION The Radiologic Protection is an essential measure to be followed in a Radiology Department, especially during the performances of procedures that use ionizing radiation. This document focuses and establishes the student s and patient safety under the direct and indirect supervision when handling ionizing radiation. The student s health and safety are a major critical area observed by the Program. In order to assurance that medical imaging procedures are performed under the direct and indirect supervision two parameters delineates the student compliance. 1. DIRECT SUPERVISION: When the radiologic technologist is present in the room during the performance of any procedure. 2. INDIRECT SUPERVISION: When the radiologic technologist is not present in the x-ray room when the student is performing a procedure, but is present within the department. Each semester the student participates in a clinical setting have to be examined by a clinical instructor. This evaluation represents a measure to demonstrate compliance with the Health and Safety Standard.

INDIRECT SUPERVISION VALUE: Total Obtained: Instructions: Place a check mark in the criteria better represents the quality of work completed by the student. Scale: 4-Excellent Always complies with everything listed in the criteria. 3- Satisfactory Frequently complies with what is listed in the criteria 2- Regular Complies with half of what is listed in the criteria 1- Deficient Rarely complies with what is listed in the criteria 0- Fail Did not comply with what is listed in the criteria N/A Not applicable CRITERIA General Clinical Practice 1. Assists to clinical practice on assigned days 2. Punctuality Arrives on time to clinical practice 3. Reports to the Clinical instructor or immediate Supervisor when arriving at the clinical area; at the start and finish of an assigned task 4. Complies with the uniform norms of the institution and the clinical laboratory 5. Brings equipment and materials to the clinical work area. Uses and disposes of the equipment correctly (dosimeter, marker and manual) 6. Plans and organizes assigned activities managing time effectively 7. Finishes assigned activities within reasonable time 4 3 2 1 0 N / A COMMENTS

8. Assumes an objective attitude towards: colleagues, Health Team, Public and Client 9. Demonstrates initiative, enthusiasm and interest for professional activities 10. Assumes responsibility for their own actions 11. Faces situations in a constructive manner: recognizes strengths, clinical weaknesses and canalizes them in an effective manner 12. Accepts suggested recommendations by the professor and radiologic technologist 13. Demonstrates changes in conduct following the recommendations of the professor or radiologic technologist 14. Completes and turns in all required clinical and completes the clinical experience log for their file PLANNING 1. Reading and interpretation of the medical order 2. Correctly identifies the patient 3. Identifies the procedure to be performed according to the clinical history 4. Determines projections and parts to be radiograph 5. Prepares the equipment and accessories to be used. (Gowns, sheets and others that apply) 6. Selects the correct size for the film carrier IMPLANTATION

1. Explains the procedure to the patient 2. Measure the anatomical part to be radiograph 3. Positions the patient correctly on the radiographic table 4. Correctly locates the marker and the identification on the radiography 5. Centralizes on the film the anatomical area to be radiograph 6. Centralizes the anatomical part with the central ray 7. Centralizes the central ray with the film 8. Selects correctly exposition factors according to the patient s habitus 9. Utilized immobilizing accessories if needed 10. Observes radiologic protection measures 11. Correctly applies automatic film processing of radiographic film EVALUATION 1. Evaluates radiographies taking into consideration exposition factors 2. Identifies the structures demonstrated in the radiography 3. Evaluates collimation of the radiograph anatomical area 4. Evaluates the density and the contrast of the radiography 5. Identifies artifacts present in radiographies
