A guide to giving in memory Remembering a loved one

Help someone with a terminal illness live life to the full, to the very end. At St Joseph s Hospice we truly understand how it can feel to lose a loved one. If your loved one was cared for by the Hospice we are here to help you and your family in your time of grief. We are also able to offer limited bereavement support to local people whose loved ones were not cared for by the Hospice. To find out more about how we may be able to help you, please request more information using the form at the back of this leaflet or visit www.stjh.org.uk/bereavement Many people have found fundraising in memory of a loved one a helpful part of the grieving process. As an independent charity, we rely on the goodwill and generosity of our supporters for 50% of the costs needed to run the Hospice. This leaflet will give you some ideas on how you can remember a loved one and help other patients and families get the care and support they need to cope with terminal illness. Collections in lieu of flowers If you are arranging a funeral and would like friends and family to donate to St Joseph s Hospice instead of a floral tribute, we can help you. Funeral Envelopes A simple way to collect donations at the funeral or wake. Using our funeral envelopes will allow us to claim gift aid where possible, meaning that donations can go even further. Online If you prefer, you can set up a fundraising page on Just Giving in memory of a loved one go to www.justgiving.com/stjoehospice or you can ask for donations to be made directly via our website www.stjh.org.uk/donate Funeral Collection Boxes If you would like to collect cash donations at the funeral or wake, we can provide you with collection boxes.

Raise a smile and a few pounds Dedicate a leaf on our Memory Tree You can remember a loved one by dedicating a leaf on one of our hand crafted Memory Trees displayed at the Hospice. This is a lovely focal point for family and friends who are welcome to view their dedication on the Tree and in our Remembrance Book at any time. By dedicating a leaf on our Memory Tree you are also helping the Hospice to continue to care for people with terminal illness and support their families through the most difficult of times. So many people who fundraise for St Joseph s Hospice do it in memory of someone they have lost. Whether you are taking part in one of the events that we organise or would like to do your own thing, this is a very special way to honour the life and memory of that person and support the Hospice at the same time. To find out more about our events, please go to www.stjh.org.uk/fundraisingevents

Light Up A Life People who attend this service find comfort and support. Light up a Life is an evening service held on the first Thursday of December at St Joseph s Hospice where patients, families and the community come together to remember those we have loved and lost. The service is open to anyone who wishes to attend and is filled with music and readings. The most poignant part of the evening is the lighting of the Remembrance Tree, with lights on the tree representing lost loved ones. Your gift can Support our nurses Our nurses go the extra mile for our patients every day, treating the person not just the symptoms. Nurses work with the patient, their family and our multi-professional team to ensure that they get the very best care and support, where and when they need it. Your donation could help us continue to provide the very best in care and support, here at the Hospice, in people s homes and through our 24/7 advice line staffed by our nursing team. Support families Being diagnosed with a terminal illness doesn t just affect the patient. It can also be scary and upsetting for their family and friends. We understand how hard it can be to be left behind and offer a range of bereavement support services to relatives, friends and carers to cope with their grief. Your donation could help families get the practical advice and emotional support they need to get back on their feet after losing a loved one. Support more people Our vision is to ensure that everyone in East London can get the very best end of life care and support - where and when they need it. Your donation could help us develop our community services and work with healthcare professionals in the local community to reach more people earlier in their diagnosis and help them to live life to the full, to the very end. A little bit about us St Joseph s Hospice is an independent charity that provides care and support to people with terminal illness. We bring peace and comfort to our patients, helping them live life to the full, to the very end. We tailor our services to suit the needs of each individual patient and work closely with them to support their choices helping them to access our services, here at the Hospice, in their own home and in the local community. We also provide practical and emotional support to families, friends and carers. It costs approximately 14 million to run the hospice for a year and we receive around 50% of this from the NHS. This means we rely on the generosity and goodwill of our local community, businesses and friends of the hospice to ensure we raise 7 million each year to keep providing our services.
