WELCOME MESSAGE I would like to extend our warmest greetings to the WHO collaborating centres as our partners in public health. I am pleased to host the First Regional Forum of WHO Collaborating Centres in the Western Pacific. About one quarter of WHO collaborating centres globally are in the Western Pacific Region, but this is the first time all the centres in the Region will be gathering together. In this Forum, we will explore innovative ways to meet emerging public health challenges in the Region. You represent institutions that work as an extension of WHO. Many of your institutions have worked with WHO for a long time some longer than 30 years. Whether developing technical guidance on complex public health issues responding to transnational public health emergencies or building technical capacity in Member States, we rely on your dedicated support. Your expertise is essential for WHO to fulfil its mission of helping Member States attain the highest possible health for their people. To that end, this Forum will provide an opportunity to develop our collective vision of the public health priorities in the Region. We can also develop our shared understanding of the global health architecture and our roles at the regional level. We will do more than just share ideas. I envision this meeting to be a strategic session to transform our partnerships to foster better public health outcomes in the Region. We all know that improving collaboration and results requires joint efforts. With more than 180 in the Region, WHO collaborating centres cover a broad range of specialties and expertise. In addition to holding plenary sessions, we will take advantage of this diversity by organizing groups of collaborating centres and the WHO secretariat according to areas of interest. This structure will foster interaction between the Secretariat and collaborating centres and deepen the relationship with richer discussions and more detailed road maps on how to better support Member States. FORUM DETAILS First Regional Forum of WHO Collaborating Centres in the Western Pacific Region The objectives of the Forum: 1. To provide an overview of WHO current priorities and future initiatives; 2. To share good practices and success stories of effective collaboration for scaling-up and wider adoption; and 3. To identify innovative opportunities and means for strengthening and enhancing partnerships between WHO collaborating centres and WHO. Registration and issuance of badges: All participants will receive their badge and Forum kit at their hotels (available upon check-in). Please ask from the hotel front desk if the kits are not given. Registration will happen on Day 1 of the Forum, 13 November 2014, 07:30-08:30 AM. Venue will be at the WHO Conference Hall Foyer. Parallel session 1 Objective: To provide an opportunity for WHO Collaborating Centres to discuss and give their feedback about the collaboration issues in an open and friendly environment. This session will also serve as a prelude to parallel session 2, 3 and 4 that will discuss in detail the current collaboration arrangements around specific technical issues.
