2 Overview ABMS Board Certification is a recognized benchmark of public trust and represents a physician s personal commitment to providing a high standard of quality patient care. The continuing certification programs administered by the ABMS Member Boards help physicians (both clinicians and researchers) demonstrate that they are current in the knowledge, judgment, and skills of their specialty. The ABMS Board Certification Report is a concise reference on the certification programs administered by the 24 specialty Member Boards of ABMS. It provides information and data about the certifications offered and awarded to physicians who meet the requirements and standards set by the Member Boards. Content reflects a combination of information reported by the boards and point-in-time data from the ABMS certification database. ABMS may from time to time delete, modify, or add tables. Contact the ABMS Member Boards for the most up-to-date information about their board certification programming. This report includes the official list of specialties and subspecialties approved by ABMS for issue by the Member Boards. Prior publications containing this information include ABMS Certificate Statistics (2006-2012); ABMS Annual Report and Reference Handbook (1980-2005); and Medical Specialties Annual Report (1973-1979), all published by ABMS. To obtain specific information for research, media, or other purposes, please contact ABMS.

Certifying Excellence in Specialty Medicine A recognized benchmark of public trust 4 Who we are We are a national organization of 24 specialty medical boards that assesses the knowledge, skills, and judgment of physicians according to the standards of practice set by the profession, and grants board certification to those meeting and remaining current with the requirements. What we do Set standards for quality and practice that emphasize professionalism, patient safety, and performance improvement Verify competency by conducting a rigorous evaluation, assessment, and certification process of a physician s knowledge, skills, and judgment Develop assessments that capture different aspects of performance in practice while incorporating new ways physicians can learn Build relationships with physicians, medical educators, hospitals and health systems, credentialing professionals, thought leaders, policymakers, and payers to encourage systematic improvements Inform patients by providing board certification information to help them select a provider

Our community More than 5,000 physician volunteers and other professionals support the work we do. They are experienced in: Patient care Health administration Education Standards development Assessment Business Community service Regulatory policy Why we do it To provide patients with a higher standard of care For more than 80 years the 24 ABMS Member Boards have certified physicians in 39 specialties and 86 subspecialties Board certification is where our work starts, not where it ends. Through continuing assessment and certification our goal is to help patients receive safe, appropriate, and high-quality care provided by specialists who make better patient care their mission.

The certificates of surgeons certifying in Vascular Surgery by this new pathway are identical to those previously issued for successful certification/recertification in Vascular Surgery. (8) For physicians certified by the Family Medicine entering the board s MOC program in 2012 or later, and for physicians initially certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the Pathology, the Pediatrics, the Psychiatry and Neurology, or the Radiology, maintaining certification is contingent upon their meeting the requirements for the specific board s MOC program, and therefore no certification end date is provided. To maintain certification from their specialty board, physicians must successfully complete specialty-specific requirements throughout their ongoing MOC cycles.

Assessing What Matters 12 Patients are more knowledgeable about their health care needs than ever before. They place a high premium on the quality of care they receive. They want their physicians to be up-to-date with the newest advancements and armed with the most current medical knowledge. And they rely on the medical profession to establish and maintain the standards for practicing medicine. That s why ABMS board certification assesses what matters. Preparing for Certification Education: Requires four years of medical school, followed by internship and residency training. This training can last from three to seven years and prepares physicians for practice in a specialty. Licensure: Requires physicians to hold a current and unrestricted license in the state(s) in which they choose to practice. Initial Board Certification Requires passing a rigorous assessment process, which covers medical knowledge, clinical knowledge, and diagnostic skills, created and administered by an ABMS Board. Subspecialty Certification Involves additional training by completion of a fellowship program in an area of the specialty and passing an assessment given by an ABMS Board. Continuing Certification Engages specialists in assessment and improvement activities focused on knowledge, skills, judgment, and performance.

What is assessed When you assess what matters most, you improve what matters most. Physicians certified by an ABMS Member Board are assessed on the knowledge, judgment, and skills that matter in providing comprehensive patient care. Practice-based learning and improvement Investigating and evaluating patient care practices, and appraising and assimilating scientific evidence Patient care and procedural skills Incorporating evidence-based medical practice, sound clinical judgment, and patient-centered decision making Systems-based practice Using health system resources responsibly to provide optimal care Medical knowledge Applying current and emerging medical knowledge Interpersonal and communication skills Developing effective relationships with patients/families and colleagues Professionalism Carrying out professional responsibilities safely, ethically, compassionately, and with sensitivity ABMS Board Certification provides the framework that helps more than 880,000 physicians demonstrate their professional preparedness and commitment to quality patient care.

(2) Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) is the accrediting body for post-md medical training programs in Canada (3) Accepted by the Canadian College of Medical Genetics. (4) The ABMS Board Eligibility Policy, effective January 1, 2012, limits the period of time that may elapse between a physician s completion of training and achievement of initial certification in a specialty. Member Boards that did not have an existing policy in place established a board eligible period of 3 to 7 years for physicians to achieve initial certification following successful completion of accredited training plus time (if any) in practice. Additionally, the boards established transition dates for physician candidates who had completed training, but not yet achieved initial certification in a specialty as of the ABMS Board Eligibility s effective date. Those Member Boards chose a date for candidates to achieve initial certification. (5) Member Board had board eligibility policies in place prior to the effective date of the ABMS Board Eligibility Policy, and therefore no future transition date is provided. They aligned their board eligible periods with the principles of the ABMS policy. (6) Two pathways for certification may be pursued. Candidates may either complete five years of prerequisite training (General Surgery) and two or three years of Thoracic Surgery, or six years of an integrated Thoracic Surgery program with no prerequisite training. The Thoracic Surgery will accept a Vascular Surgery residency in lieu of a General Surgery residency as long as the Vascular Surgery training leads to primary certification by the Surgery.

Table 2B: ABMS Member Board Requirements for Subspecialty Certification 18 Subspecialty certification is awarded to candidates who meet the requirements in a component of a specialty or subspecialty. It can be granted to specialists who have been certified by one or more Member Boards in an area of general certification. This table identifies the requirements for subspecialty certification from each Member Board, but as presented in this form, the information is over-simplified. To confirm current official policy, requirements, and fees, contact the particular board. Footnotes can be found on page 23. These boards do not issue subspecialty certificates: Allergy and Immunology, Colon and Rectal Surgery, Neurological Surgery, Nuclear Medicine, Ophthalmology. ABMS established the ABMS Eligibility for Subspecialties policy in 2017. The policy, which will take effect January 1, 2018, limits the period of time that may elapse between a physician s training and achievement of initial certification in a subspecialty. Member Boards are in the process of aligning their processes/policies with the new ABMS policy. Contact the particular board for information about eligibility for subspecialty certification.
