THE 34TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE SELF The Influence of Attitude in Psychoanalysis Dear Colleagues, The program for this 34th Annual International Conference on The Psychology of The Self, The Influence of Attitude in Psychoanalysis, offers a rich and varied array of psychoanalytic presentations that you will not want to miss. The three plenary panels feature an exploration of the influence of psychoanalytic attitudes as applied to the theoretical and clinical world of self psychology. In the first plenary the new theory of motivational systems of Lichtenberg, Lachmann, and Fosshage will be presented first as theory and then as clinical application. The second plenary presents Robert D. Stolorow's theory of trauma as applied to the case of an Iraqi War Veteran. Finally, in the third plenary, an episode of the popular HBO television series In Treatment will serve as the basis for a multiperspectival exploration of the effects of attitude, implicit and explicit, on the understanding of the patient-analyst relationship. Conference participants will be assigned to a Post Plenary Discussion Group that will meet at the close of each plenary, led by a well-established International Council Members of IAPSP, who will address questions and facilitate conversation about topics addressed. The program includes individual papers, workshops, meet-the-author sessions, and panels selected from a large number of submissions of original work. The Kohut Memorial Lecture entitled "Blues and Emotional Trauma: A Musical Tribute to Kohut's Observations on the Psychological Functions of Music" will be delivered by Robert D. Stolorow and Ben A. Stolorow. We are offering this extensive array of educational opportunities at the Omni Hotel, California Plaza, sitting atop historic Bunker Hill in the heart of sophisticated downtown Los Angeles. This is an area that achieved a surprising new growth in a vibrant cultural milieu. Among the numerous attractions just blocks away from the hotel are the Disney Concert Hall, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Mark Taper Theater Complex, and the Staples Center, home to the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers. Because the conference ends on Saturday, Sunday offers the possibility of exploring our cultural surround. Thus the unique educational and professional opportunity made available by this 34th Annual International Conference of the Psychology of The Self will take place in the context of a plentitude of art and entertainment. We look forward to seeing you there! 2011 Conference Co-Chairs: Lucyann Carlton and Estelle Shane COMMITTEES 2011 Conference Co-Chairs Lucyann Carlton, PsyD, JD Estelle Shane, PhD 2011 Conference Paper Chair Kati Breckenridge, PhD 2011 Conference Planning Committee William J.
