Friends In Deed and its Dedication to our Community A History of Service Clients from Friends In Deed - The Women s Room Friends In Deed is pleased to re-introduce itself to the Pasadena community. Started by a group of committed community leaders in 1894, Friends In Deed has been known by several names, most recently ECPAC or Ecumenical Council of Pasadena Area Congregations. The name ECPAC did not truly explain who we are and what we do. Friends In Deed does. Our food pantry has long been known to local residents as Friends In Deed, but we are much more than a food pantry. We can only do what we do because so many friends in the community come together in deed to make a difference in individual lives. Friends In Deed is dedicated to meeting the many needs of some of Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley s most vulnerable residents homeless and at risk individuals including women and children. Its many programs include the Bad Weather Shelter, homeless prevention services, food pantry and The Women s Room, a one-of-a-kind day program meeting the needs of homeless women. Friends In Deed meets people where they are, without judgment or restrictions that deny people the help they need. Coordinated by a small and dedicated staff, we rely on our vast network of community congregations and friends who volunteer in support of each of our important programs. Volunteers provide food, muscle to do what needs to be done from moving cots to painting walls to harvesting local gardens. Their smiling faces and helping hands ensure that individuals in need are safe and fed and find a vision of hope for their futures. What does this small but mighty organization accomplish? More than you can imagine. Each year over 3,200 individuals are served. Here are some of the ways: Each month our food pantry serves nearly 400 households with food that the family chooses so that vital nourishment and dignity is maintained. Last winter, over 900 people, including families with children, ate well and slept in safety at the Bad Weather Shelter. Each summer, 30 children participate in life-affirming and skill-building summer camp experiences with our support. Throughout the year, 80 homeless and at-risk women seek comfort, food, education, health services and respectful attention to their needs through the laundry, lunch and learning programs offered by The Women s Room. Your support helps sustain Friends In Deed and the important work it does each and every day. We invite you to make a generous contribution today. A Story of Commitment Bill Huang and his Dedication to Friends In Deed A leader with vast education and experience As we honor Bill Huang at Taste!, we want you to know a little more about his contributions to the City of Pasadena and the many ways in which he has contributed to the success of Friends In Deed. As the director of housing for the City of Pasadena, Bill oversees a multitude of programs that ensure both that Pasadena s residents have safe and affordable housing and that all Pasadena residents receive needed social and career services necessary to ensure that at-risk individuals find a path to stability. He is responsible for the City s affordable housing development, inclusionary housing, first time homebuyer program, Section 8 program, Community Development Block Grant program, and employment and homeless programs. Prior to coming to work in Pasadena, Bill was the housing director for Los Angeles County. During his tenure he helped to fund dozens of affordable housing developments throughout the county, developed several transitional housing facilities for emancipated foster youth, started the nation s largest free Bill Huang housing search website, and established a new $20 million affordable housing revolving loan fund. Bill worked for years as an affordable housing developer and produced hundreds of affordable housing developments including the former Pasadena YMCA, now known as Centennial Place, and Euclid Villa which provides transitional housing for formerly homeless families from Pasadena and Glendale. Several of the most innovative and productive local nonprofit housing development corporations got their start with Bill s assistance including Pasadena s Heritage Housing Partners, as well as others in Hollywood, West Hollywood, Skid Row, and South Los Angeles. Bill is the recipient of a number of local, state and national awards. He earned his Master s degree in architecture from Harvard University s Graduate School of Design and his bachelor s degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (Sci-Arc). Bill resides in unincorporated East Pasadena/North San Gabriel with his wife and two children. His daughter, Rebecca, has become a fierce advocate for Friends In Deed in her own right and was honored by the agency last year for her rallying community support for Friends In Deed s Bad Weather Shelter. Dedicated to ensuring safety and service to Pasadena s vulnerable Friends In Deed honors Bill for his commitment to sustaining our work. Seeing that Friends In Deed needed case management support for our clients, Bill worked with us to secure a grant from East West Bank to add a homeless prevention case manager to our staff. When governmental funding for our Bad Weather Shelter was cut and we needed to raise public awareness of the crisis, he helped us obtain $5,000 from East West Bank to support poster installation throughout the city to increase public awareness about the Bad Weather Shelter. Bill put Friends In Deed in contact with the Art Center College of Design to help design shelter posters and arrange for their installation throughout the City. Time and again he directed the media to us to ensure that the public was aware of the need for, and effective operation of, the Bad Weather Shelter and its role in keeping residents safe during cold winter nights. When we needed funds to repair the building where The Women s Room and food pantry are housed, Bill worked with County Supervisor Mike Antonovich s office, helping us obtain $100,000 for repairs and an additional $100,000 challenge grant to stimulate new funding to sustain the Bad Weather Shelter s operation in years to come. We ask you to help us honor Bill for his work on behalf of Friends In Deed and the health and safety of the entire Pasadena community. Become a sponsor for Taste! a Wine and Cheese Pairing. All funding will go toward Friends in Deed s essential programs in honor of Bill s career and contributions to the community.
