Cellular Nutrition A Matter of Life & Death Dick Couey, Ph.D. richard_couey@baylor.edu

Phase One The Human Cell

The Human Cell Many varieties of cells The body contains between 80-100 trillion cells Muscle, bone, nerve, blood, skin, etc Cells have different structures and functions, but all have basically the same chemistry Everything on this planet is made out of chemicals Earth is made out of 94 chemical elements The human cell is made out of 27 chemical elements

Inside the Cell

Inside the Cell There are approximately 100,000 chemical reactions a second These chemical reactions are made possible with the help of nearly 20,000 different enzymes which I call the Master Chemists

Inside the Cell How are enzymes made in the body?

Inside the Cell Inside the nucleus we normally find 46 chromosomes

Inside the Cell Each chromosome contains 30-40 thousand genes

Inside the Cell Inside each gene you find approx. 17 inches of wound DNA

Inside the Cell There are four sugar bases Thymine and Adenine Cytosine and Quanine These four sugar bases can produce 20 amino acids The amino acids line up in a certain sequence to produce 20,000 enzymes The enzymes can produce 100,000 chemical reactions a second

Inside the Cell What can go wrong in protein synthesis?

What can go wrong in protein synthesis? Oxidative stress can produce free radicals which can cause the genetic code to incorrectly make the wrong enzyme Glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) are natural antioxidants Nutrition and enzymes also help eliminate free radicals

Phase TWO Six ways to control cellular chemistry

Nutrition We must consume the 27 chemical elements in their proper amounts that are found in the cell We must also consume 45 nutrients in their proper amounts carbohydrates, fats, protein, 9 amino acids, 18 vitamins, 19 minerals and water If you fail to consume these chemicals and nutrients in their proper amounts, you die!

Exercise Creates ATP and more mitochondria in the cell Removes waste from the cell

Remove the waste (lipofuscin) from cell Consume at least 64 ounces of water daily The water should have a ph of at least 7.4 The normal human cell ranges between 7.35-7.45 ph Enzyme development is affected below 7.3 ph

The whole person physical, mental, emotional, spiritual Membrane proteins open or close with a positive or negative attitude Emotions can open or close membrane proteins Prayer has been shown to open membrane proteins

Phase Three Inflammation and Arachidonic Acid

Inflammation Did You Know Over 200 diseases can be linked to inflammation More Americans go to the doctor than any other country Inflammation can have its beginning in the cell

Within the Cell Omega 3 s & Omega 6 s EPA DHA ARACHIDONIC ACID COX Prostaglandins EPO 5-leukotrienes

Inflammation Outside the cell, prostaglandins and leukotrienes call the immune system to attack A war within occurs White blood cells, antibodies, cytokines and others attack The symptoms of inflammation are swelling, redness and pain The silver bullet to inflammation is to reduce arachidonic acid in the body

Arachidonic Acid Arachidonic acid is found in our food Meats Dairy products Palm oil Egg yolks Farm-raised animals

Arachidonic Acid To reduce inflammation we must significantly reduce arachidonic acid We must reduce the ratio of omega 6 s to omega 3 s to 4:0 or less (we now consume omega 6 s at 50:1 to omega 3 s) Eat wild fish, raw nuts, flaxseed which contains omega 3 s Eat foods that are low on glycemic index Reduce significantly processed foods Significantly reduce foods containing refined sugar

What should you eat? Whole grain wheat, oats, rice Legumes Tubors Fruits Veggies (cruciferous)

Breakfast Whole grain wheat (Ezekiel) Whole grain cereals (almond milk) Whole grain oats (trevia sweetener) Fruit Berries Flaxseed

Lunch (Salads) Romaine lettuce Cabbage Kale Spinach Broccoli Cauliflower Asparagus Spinach Tomatoes Cucumbers Bell peppers Onions Beets Raw nuts Fruit Balsamic vinaigrette

Dinner Farm-raised meat Sweet potato New red potato Beans or peas Fruit Salad Whole grain rolls and bread Smoothies

Digestive Enzymes Remember to take digestive enzymes to ensure proper absorption of all the chemicals and nutrients
