Coaches vs. Cancer of Northeast Pennsylvania PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

About Coaches vs. Cancer of Northeast PA The students of Northeast PA have aced the lesson in giving back. Nowhere is this more evident than in the fruits of their labor for Coaches vs. Cancer. Now in its fifth year locally, the campaign, which benefits the American Cancer Society, surged from just a few hundred dollars raised in its first year to over $175,000 last year. The fundraising effort, which boasts participation from 42 schools in the Lackawanna League and Wyoming Valley Conference, parallels the school year. A kick-off breakfast in November gets the ball rolling. Competition heats up as each school conducts its own fundraisers with the goal to raise the most money. Fundraising ideas vary from bake sales to t-shirt sales and collection drives, and creativity is encouraged. All cancer is unique and different and so is the fight against it. The campaign is often spearheaded by one person within the school coach, advisor or student completing a senior project and then taken up by the entire student body. The efforts have even trickled down to younger students who participate at the elementary school level. The next phase of the Program is the Suits and Sneakers weekend (late January, early February). During all boys and girls league play that weekend, coaches show their support by donning sneakers with their traditional game day attire. Students sell t-shirts, wristbands, headbands and other merchandise for months leading up to this weekend. There are events, sales, banners, and all kinds of other Coaches vs. Cancer Activities in the schools and communities. A Hoopla Celebration on the Saturday of Suits and Sneakers weekend brings the weekend festivities to a close. The wrap up cocktail party at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted at the door. Daddy-O and the Sax Maniacs will provide live entertainment. Guests can also participate in a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and TV raffle. Scranton Prep Head Coach Andrew Kettel brought the national campaign to Northeast PA five years ago. He was inspired by plight of one of his players whose father was battling pancreatic cancer at the time. He reached out to the local chapter of The American Cancer Society. Kettel was impressed by the amount of dollars that stay locally. The Society uses money for its programs that benefit cancer patients in the community. The Society offers programs that offer free rides to treatments for cancer patients, free wigs for those undergoing chemotherapy and the Look Good Feel Better program which gives cosmetics products free of charge to cancer patients. The Society also sponsors support groups and offers shelter to patients and their families at Hope Lodge. Northeast PA residents who travel to Philadelphia, Hershey or many of the other major treatment hosptials may stay at these residential facilities at no cost. The first-ever Coaches vs. Cancer of NEPA BasketBALL put the fun back in fundraising. Event organizers held the black tie optional, sneakers preferred, gala on May 11 and it was, nothing like you ve ever seen! Attendees to the Coaches vs. Cancer season wrap-up event can expect the usual gala activities such as dinner, dancing and live music, but a few surprises are always in store. Some things to expect are free throw competitions against NCAA coaches, a spectacular live auction full of experienced-based prizes, a special presentation by an NCAA Division I Basketball Coach and an honoring of a local cancer survivor. The American Cancer Society is 100 percent focused on saving lives. Our unwavering commitment is based on a century of experience. We turn what we know about cancer - like how to prevent it - into what we do. And we fight on every front, because lessons from one battlefield can mean victory on another. Together with our millions of supports, the American Cancer Society saves lives and creates more birthdays by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. Stay Well The key to celebrating more birthdays is to stay well. We save lives by helping people everywhere take steps to prevent cancer or detect it early, when it s most treatable. Whether it s helping you quit smoking, providing information on what cancer screening tests are right for you, or through simple tips to live a healthier lifestyle, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do about it. Get Well Whether it s the middle of the day or the middle of the night, we re in your corner around the clock to guide you through every step of your cancer experience. The American Cancer Society saves lives by helping people get well by providing information to help make decisions or free services like transportation to and from cancer treatment or a free place to stay while receiving treatment far from home. We know that every cancer patient is a fighter and we re in the ring with you through every round. We help you fight for more birthdays. Finding Cures We have a long history of saving lives by helping find cancer s causes and cures. Whether it s discovering medications that help people live longer and better than ever, or pioneering and promoting the most promising cancer prevention or screening tests, we ve been involved in nearly every major cancer breakthrough in the last century. As the world s largest private funder of cancer research, we support the best ideas of the brightest cancer researchers, who with each discovery are getting us closer to a world with more birthdays. Fighting Back At its core, the American Cancer Society is a vigilant grassroots force of citizen-soldiers passionate volunteers who tirelessly seek to save lives from cancer. We work with lawmakers everywhere to make this world a healthier place to live and we rally communities around the globe to join our fight. Whether it s passing smoke-free laws, increasing funding for cancer research, improving access to quality health care, or inspiring communities to take up the fight, we fight on all fronts, because the lessons we learn from one battlefield can mean victory on another. Through community events like Relay For Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, we mobilize the world s largest movement to to defeat cancer once and for all.
