II. about the alzheimer s association and alzheimer s disease Welcome to the Alzheimer s Association Walk to End Alzheimer s, the nation s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer s care, support and research. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, this inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions. Together, we can end Alzheimer s disease, the nation s sixth-leading cause of death. Thank you for registering as a Company Team Captain. We value your leadership in this unique role, as company participation is essential to the success of Walk. In this role, you can be a powerful force in the fight to end Alzheimer s disease. The end of Alzheimer s disease starts with you! When you participate in Walk, you are not only helping to raise critical funds to fuel our mission, you are also working to change the level of awareness in your community. At a Walk event, your company team can demonstrate team spirit, celebrate your fundraising success and learn more about Alzheimer s disease and the support programs and services offered by your local chapter. You will also have unique opportunities to get involved with the cause through advocacy initiatives and clinical trial enrollment. Walk to End Alzheimer s creates a unique opportunity for participants to personally connect with the Association and a community of people fighting Alzheimer s. As a Company Team Captain, you will have an opportunity to: Establish/strengthen a relationship with the Alzheimer s Association. To find your local chapter, visit alz.org/findus. Contribute personally to your Walk fundraising efforts. Recruit others to join you in support of this cause. Involve clients, family and friends. Educate others about the importance of early detection of Alzheimer s. Represent yourself and your company as a community leader. This Company Team Guide focuses on the essential and proven elements of a successful Team Captain, including recruitment, fundraising, event presence and organization. To support these main functions, this guide contains instructions and tips. Together and with effective implementation of these steps we can make this year a great success. Alzheimer s Association The Alzheimer s Association is the world s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer s care, support and research. Founded in 1980 by a group of family caregivers, the Association includes the national office in Chicago, the public policy office in Washington, D.C., and chapters in communities across the country. We deliver information, education and support for millions of individuals, caregivers and medical professionals who face dementia every day. We provide care and support across the country. We advance research seeking methods of prevention, treatment and ultimately, a cure. We advocate for the needs and rights of people facing Alzheimer s. OUR VISION: A world without Alzheimer s disease. About Alzheimer s disease Alzheimer s disease is a global epidemic. Worldwide, more than 35 million people are living with the disease. In the United States alone, an estimated 5.4 million people have Alzheimer s, and more than 15 million are serving as their caregivers. Alzheimer s is the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression. How to encourage participants to join your company team. Registered participants will receive a confirmation message and will arrive on the Thank You Page. From here, click on Take the Next Step to visit your Participant Center, where you can set up your Personal Web page and begin team recruitment. Personalize both your Personal and Team Web pages, automatically created for you. Add photos or a reason why you/your company is participating in Walk. In your Participant Center, you ll find emails already written for you to help with team recruitment. Upload your email address book to your Participant Center and send an email to all your co-workers, vendors, partners and clients. Encourage team members to invite friends and family, too! alz.org/walk 1. Access tools specific for recruiting and raising awareness in the workplace. We make it easy for you! After registering as a Team Captain, these tools and many more are available in every Walker s Participant Center. Be sure to check out the Company Team Promotion section. National Teams, you can access your National Team Page by visiting alz.org/walk and selecting the National Teams tab. Footprints: Use these footprints to attract attention in your office. Give one to each team member to hang at their desk, or place them in the hallway, creating a path to follow to a poster or sign-up sheet. Over-the-clock sign: Place this sign, which raises awareness of the fact Every 68 seconds someone develops Alzheimer s, in a lunch room or break room. National Teams can tap into the tools available through the National Team online toolkit to help with recruitment and management including a National Team press release, recruitment letters and National Team registration instructions. TIP When you recruit a new team member, enlist their help with fundraising and recruitment. Make sure they know to send emails from their Participant Center to encourage participation and support from their family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. You ll be surprised how quickly your team grows! 4. For National Team Members only: Participate in the monthly National Team webinar. This call, hosted by Alzheimer s Association staff at the national office, will provide you with the latest tools and tips to make your Walk experience a success. You should receive a conference call number from your National Team Coordinator. If not, please email nationalteam@alz.org. Walk Promotion Poster: Print this poster and hang it in break rooms, cafeterias, all staff meetings or any major traffic location in your office. It includes a customizable field at the bottom, allowing you to insert contact information that tears off. National Team Recognition Poster: For those in the National Team Program, you will find a branded recognition poster in your toolkit. We suggest a goal of $225/raised per team member. The majority of Walks also offer participants an official Walk T-shirt after you raise $100. National Teams, please contact your National Team Coordinator for more information on your company fundraising goals and guidelines. We encourage participants who are unable to attend a local Walk to register as a virtual walker in order to gain access to easy fundraising tools. FUNDING GOAL HALFWAY THERE alz.org/walk 800.272.3900 2. Use the email templates available through your Participant Center to ask friends, family and colleagues for donations. You can also email your team through the Participant Center and encourage them to take advantage of the email templates as well. Raising funds for research, care, and support. 3. Consider friendly competition between team members and departments. Set weekly or monthly goals for everyone to beat, offer prizes/ incentives and recognize members successes. Most email programs give you the ability to create your own signature at the bottom of each message. This is a great way to let both personal and business contacts know that you are walking. Add a link to your Walk page and you may be surprised at the number of people who end up donating. Ask your boss to donate a free day off for the top fundraiser on your team, or something meaningful to employees. Host a morning coffee cart or afternoon snack cart. Sell candy, chips, popcorn, soda, bagels or donuts at the office and wheel them around the office on a mail cart. You may be able to get the goods donated so everything goes to your fundraising. 5. National Teams, tap into the tools available through your National Team online toolkit, including creative fundraising ideas, fundraising letters and other resources to help you make the most of Walk. 6. Take advantage of annual events to rally your company team. You may want to host a fundraising or awareness event around these annual events! Visit alz.org to find out what the Alzheimer s Association is doing to recognize these occasions. May-August September November March April Walk to End Alzheimer s Team Recruitment Media Campaign World Alzheimer s Month National Alzheimer s Awareness Month and National Family Caregiver Month Release of the Alzheimer s Association annual Facts & Figures Report National Volunteer Week Some companies have implemented fundraising activities during holidays and events throughout the year (Valentine s Day, St. Patrick s Day, 4th of July, etc). 7. Be sure funds raised are accurately captured on your Walk team page. Turn all funds into the Alzheimer s Association as soon as possible for timely recognition. National Teams, please contact your National Team Coordinator if there are any discrepancies. TIP Participants who make a self-donation online raise, on average, twice as much as participants who don t! 4. Regularly communicate with your team members, provide updates and highlights, and encourage them with fundraising options. Consider using email, voicemail and face-toface gatherings. TIP Invite your colleagues to send in their personal stories to highlight why they Walk. Employees may be more inclined to donate or form a team to show their support for another colleague.

National Teams, please refer to the recognition benefits tab located on your National Team Page. For all Company Teams Create a rally point. Pick a location to meet your team before the start of the opening ceremony. Take photos to capture your team spirit and share with your company human resources or communications team to feature as an example of employee involvement in the community. Some companies design a company shirt to showcase their brand commitment. If not, bring a banner to to show your company s commitment to the cause. For National Teams only Every National Team will have their logo included on the official National Team banner displayed at every Walk to End Alzheimer s event. In addition, your National Team should: Create a rally point. Pick a location to meet your team before the start of the opening ceremony. Take photos to capture your team spirit and share with your National Team Coordinator. Companies want to celebrate local community involvement with employees and now on your dedicated national team website your team may be featured! Bring your own company banner or sign to showcase. Walk together as a National Team to show your company s commitment to a world without Alzheimer s. Platinum and Gold Level National Teams only Platinum and Gold Level Teams have the benefit of exhibit space at local Walks. Coordinating exhibit space is the responsibility of the Team Captain, or someone that he/she designates. If you have more than one facility participating at one Walk, please coordinate with each other to designate one point of contact for the chapter. Connect with your local chapter to arrange and plan for your exhibit space. Introduce yourself and your role. Express your intent to have an exhibit space staffed at Walk as soon as possible (available at no charge to Platinum and Gold level teams). Inquire about logistics: How big is the exhibit space? Is power available? Are tables or chairs provided? Space location and size may vary by Walk site. Please work with your chapter contact to arrange your space. Explore ways you or others can assist in making your Walk a success. NOTE: Teams must be registered by August 1 and have raised funds in order to earn this recognition benefit. We are incredibly grateful for your support and so are the 5.4 million people living with Alzheimer s disease. The Alzheimer s Association asks your organization to follow these basic guidelines when promoting the Alzheimer s Association, Walk to End Alzheimer s and all related activities. Your support will help us to maintain clear, consistent communication with our event participants, the public and the media. For all Company Teams Celebrate your company brand in your team communications. Recognize employee personal stories and dedication of employees for getting involved. Leverage your Walk Team to enhance team moral and camaraderie. Use the language Supporter of the Alzheimer s Association Walk to End Alzheimer s in public and internal materials. Execute company-wide messaging about participating in Walk. These messages should include top-down communication so that employees feel a commitment from organization leaders. For example, the company s CEO could write an email informing employees why it is important to walk and raise money. Clearly explain the fundraising goals of your Company Team to each Walk site/location. For National Teams only NOTE: The National Team Program is built upon a commitment to recruit teams and raise funds for the Alzheimer s Association. There are no national sponsors of Walk to End Alzheimer s. However, local sponsorship opportunities are available and include additional local benefits. If you are interested, contact your local Alzheimer s Association chapter. As a National Team, your organization agrees to: 1. Use the following wording when referring to your relationship with the Alzheimer s Association in all marketing materials: Supporter of the Alzheimer s Association Walk to End Alzheimer s. National Team of the Alzheimer s Association Walk to End Alzheimer s. 2. Communicate and promote the Walk relationship throughout your organization, including your team fundraising goal, Walk overview, communication guidelines and participation benefits. In order to best support National Teams, the Alzheimer s Association will: Provide guidelines and files for Walk graphics. Communicate with Alzheimer s Association chapters across the country about National Team updates and information. Collaborate with National Teams to provide support materials.
