INTERNATIONAL HOLIDAY CAMP GREAT BRITAIN SUPPORT US

IHC 2018 Great Britain The Order of Malta Volunteers will be hosting the International Holiday Camp in August 2018. Over 450 young people with disabilities and volunteers will come together in the UK for a once in a lifetime week of fun, friendship and adventure. Guests will travel from 20 countries around the world to take part in the camp. We aim to provide them with a holiday they will never forget, but we can only do this with your support. ORDER OF MALTA GREAT BRITAIN

Since 1983, members of the Order of Malta have hosted the annual International Holiday Camp (IHC) in a different country every year. Over 450 young people aged between 18 and 35, come together from around the world, including guests living with various disabilities and volunteer carers. They live together, befriend one another and share exceptional experiences. Over one week in the summer, we offer guests a packed program of diverse activities, workshops and experiences. Recent camps have been held in France, the Netherlands, Ireland and Hungary. Guests have had the opportunity to kayak, horse-ride, fly in light aircraft, scuba dive, and try indoor skydiving. Guests receive 24-hour care from volunteer helpers of the same age; resulting in lifelong friendships. The IHC has taught me that happiness is infectious - Immy, Helper THE ORDER OF MALTA S INTERNATIONAL HOLIDAY CAMPS

What is different from other camps? Once in a lifetime experiences Run by young people for young people Global Spiritual foundations We aim to break down barriers of what can be achieved by people with disabilities. Whether it is indoor skydiving, visiting Amsterdam s canals, or staying up until 3 am at the disco; we overturn the conventions that say how young people with disabilities are expected to achieve and experience. Guests, helpers and staff are all aged between 18 and 35. This means it s easy to: build friendships, put on the most appropriate events and activities, develop the skills of all involved, and know how to have fun. Guests and helpers come from over 20 different countries. Friendships are forged across language and cultural barriers. Activities provide participants with an opportunity to learn about the different cultures and traditions of those in attendance. These friendships translate into a global network of young people working on or living with disabilities. The Order of Malta is a Catholic organisation, and faith and worship is a key feature of the IHC. Alongside group Masses in magnificent settings, we encourage quiet periods of contemplation and smaller evening services to provide guests and helpers with time to reflect.

CHANGING LIVES WITH THE IHC We have found that this magic formula creates a very special experience that has a transformative impact on guests and helpers. A week s holiday has a lasting impact on everyone. For our disabled guests, the IHC is more than just a break from daily routine but an opportunity to get out in the world and be inspired by what it has to offer. The IHC: Promotes cross-cultural understanding Develops new skills through educational workshops Builds a global networks of disability activists and support networks Builds the confidence of disabled guests through positive experiences and relationships Inspires guests and helpers for the year ahead Breaks down barriers of social isolation and those between people with disabilities and those who are able bodied.

IMMY S STORY Helper I have been on two IHCs in Holland and France. It is a more fun and adventurefilled week than the other OMV activities. It s a chance to really bond with the individual guests we take out. Not only are you making friends and doing fun things in the process, but you get to help someone take part in an activity they never thought they would be able to; this is incredibly rewarding. The most important thing is that everyone enjoys themselves. Someone may not want to try skydiving, but simply getting to know new people can bring so much joy. I have made some great friends with helpers and guests on these camps. Some I knew before and got to know better, and others I met for the first time. It s also great to meet people from different countries. The IHC has taught me that happiness is infectious. No matter how tired you may be, seeing the smiles and laughs of so many people from so many different countries and backgrounds, you can t help but feel blessed to share this with them. Looking through the photos of previous camps helps bring a smile to my face, no matter my mood. These memories and friendships stay with you. I know IHC helps give me perspective, even if just for a short time of the year. It is truly humbling and an honour to get to spend time with these people. 2013 was my first IHC and the first time I had been to Ireland. We travelled by coach and ferry. We went on a boat trip and had a young guide who took us around the old building and talked about their history. We went shopping and sightseeing in Dublin; had an archery class; made masks and took a ride in a carriage. The IHC was completely different from other camps I had been on because we could stay up late every night talking to our friends. There were hundreds of people taking part in the games, workshops and cultural events. We learnt from one another and overcame barriers. My second language is Polish and I tried to talk to the Polish delegation but we couldn t understand one another. I suspect they knew a different dialect to me. Although people came from different cultures, countries and with different disabilities, we all were able to create a unique atmosphere of solidarity, tolerance and treating each other as equals. This was our success. I came back home more confident and with happy memories, as I had met many great friends during this time. ANNA S STORY Guest

The 2018 IHC will be organised by the Order of Malta Volunteers (OMV). We are a group of young people committed to giving people with disabilities opportunities and experiences away from their day to day lives. We also provide young volunteers with experience in caring for people with disabilities and organising our activities and events. We are entirely run by volunteers under the age of 30. The OMV is a member of the global Order of Malta, and runs multiple activities throughout the year ranging from two week camps in the Middle East to weekends in Norfolk. Our volunteers provide the large proportion of the physical care needs of our disabled guests. The training received and experience gained is central to the OMV ethos and the reason that so many of our volunteers and guests return year after year. For more information, see our website: www.omv.org.uk THE ORDER OF MALTA VOLUNTEERS

HOSTING THE IHC IN THE UK When? 11 th 18 th August 2018. Staff will be on-site over a 10 day period. Where? Treloar s School, Hampshire, UK. Not only is this a convenient and cost-effective location for the camp, but it also supports the school s own fundraising efforts. Who? 450 participants, including 150 disabled guests, 200 young volunteer carers, and 100 young volunteer staff. The vast majority will be aged between 18 and 35. Plans are already well underway for IHC 2018. The camp will take place in and around Treloar s School in Hampshire. This school and college for disabled students has some of the best facilities adapted to the needs of young people with disabilities in the world. Wheelchair access, adapted sports facilities, and hoists are in place throughout the school/site. Situated in the heart of the English countryside (within reach of London), this is the perfect location for introducing our international guests to British culture and hospitality. We are developing an ambitious program of events, activities and trips which will be provided throughout the week. This could include: a village fete and music festival, sightseeing trips to London and Winchester, sailing to the Isle of Wight, flying, horse-ridding, car racing, and paragliding all adapted to the physical needs of our guests, on site spa and sport and art activities, dance and music workshops, and visits to attractions such as Harry Potter Land.

WE NEED 450,000 TO RUN IHC 2018 It will cost 450,000 to run the IHC in 2018, see the breakdown of key costs below. We will raise 100,000 from country team fees. We charge all volunteer helpers and staff a subsidised rate of 230 to attend the camp for the week. Guests are also charged 230 but this cost is covered by the local Order of Malta association. Overall, the IHC costs 1,000 per person for the week. Therefore, the OMV needs to raise 315,000 by July 2018 to host IHC 2018. Whilst these costs may be high, they still compare very favourably to holidays for the disabled from private companies.
