MIRACLE MILE PATIENT CHAMPION KINZLEY SCHMEHL Kinzley s parents had a gut feeling that something was very wrong with their daughter for many months leading up to her diagnosis. They had seen doctor after doctor and were getting no answers. Finally, they came to Nationwide Children s Hospital and within that first appointment doctors knew Kinzley, just nine months old, had Hurler s Syndrome. Hurler s Syndrome is a rare, progressive genetic disorder of the metabolism in which the body lacks a necessary enzyme needed to break down sugars in the body. The only cure for Hurler s syndrome is a bone marrow transplant. Kinzley s big sister was a match. So in July of 2012, Kinzley began a very aggressive treatment of chemotherapy to prepare her body for her transplant. Kinzley s transplant took place on July 20th, 2012. And one year later she is thriving. On Mile 25, nearing the end of the Nationwide Children s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon, Kinzley will be celebrating her life, the gift from her brave sister, and every child who has been cared for by Nationwide Children s. The Nationwide Children s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon is about much more than running or walking an incredible distance. It s about 24 Miracle Mile Patient Champions who have shared their stories to inspire you. One Angel Mile to honor, remember, and celebrate those who have already finished their race. And one Encore Mile, for the patients who lined the inaugural Nationwide Children s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon in 2012. 26.2 miles, each with a different story, a new inspiration, and another reason to keep running. These miraculous kids will be on each mile of the marathon on October 20th, supporting you every step of the way. This is your opportunity to support them. Your commitment to fundraise for the Nationwide Children s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon makes you a Champion- a Children s Champion! We are honored to have you on our team as an ambassador for our children and our community. Please read through this packet to learn valuable fundraising tips. If you have any questions at all, please contact us at Childrens.Champions@NationwideChildrens.org. To read more inspirational stories from our Patient Champions, visit NationwideChildrens.org/marathon-miracle-mile-patients. Thank you for being a Children s Champion!

Every Gift Matters Donor support allows Nationwide Children s Hospital to stay true to its mission: every child will receive expert care, regardless of the family s inability to pay. This mission has not changed in 120 years. Below are examples of what your generosity and fundraising helps to buy for Nationwide Children s Hospital. Amount Raised Impact $1 Anti-slip socks. We give anti-slip socks to patients to avoid the risk of falls nearly 9,000 every year! $10 Gift cards for patient celebrations. Gift cards are a great way to celebrate special occasions like patients last chemotherapy treatment. $25 Diapers for our premature babies. Our tiniest patients use more than 31,000 diapers a year. $25 will buy five packs. $100 Infant blood pressure cuffs. We use thousands of small cuffs that are sized just right so that we get accurate blood pressure readings. $100 will help us buy enough for one week. $250 Snuggle Wrap. Our tiny infants need to be cuddled close and this swaddle keeps them warm in the isolette. $500 Toys for our Celebration Chest. Each child who has a procedure done in our Cancer Clinic gets to choose a toy or game when he or she is finished. This gift will help us fund the items inside for one month. $1,000 Scholarships for Summer Camp. Our patients attend camp in a medically-safe environment so they can do what they do best be kids! $1,000 will support five scholarships. $5,000 Specialized Wheelchair. Thousands of our patients need access to wheelchairs for temporary rehabilitation as well as to create independence for those with limited mobility. A specialized wheelchair for kids can cost more than $5,000.

Sample Fundraising Letter #1 Dear Friends and Family, I have decided to participate in the 2013 Nationwide Children s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon weekend as a Children s Champion. While training for the (1/2 marathon/marathon), I will be raising money for Nationwide Children s Hospital. I am determined to make each step of my (13.1/26.2) miles count by fundraising to cure, mend, comfort and save the estimated one million children who will walk through the hospital doors this year. I am asking for your help. Every gift matters. Nationwide Children s Hospital has some of the best pediatric physicians doing world-class research. I have enclosed the story of a Nationwide Children s patient, Kinzley, who underwent aggressive chemotherapy after being diagnosed with leukemia. I am running the marathon in honor of her brave fight. Nationwide Children s Hospital has held true to its mission for 120 years: to provide every child with the highest quality of care, regardless of the family s ability to pay. Donors like you make this possible. My personal goal is to raise $3,000, which will cover the cost of two chemotherapy chairs in the Hematology/ Oncology Unit at Nationwide Children s Hospital. Any contribution you are able to make is greatly appreciated. All donations should be made payable to Nationwide Children s Hospital. You can mail donations to me in the enclosed envelope or donate on my webpage http://www.nationwidechildrens.org.kintera.org/. Thank you for helping me to reach my goal. I truly appreciate your support. Sincerely,

Sample Fundraising Letter #2 Dear Friends and Family, I am excited to share that I will be training for the 2013 Nationwide Children s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon weekend as a Children s Champion. While training for the full marathon, I will be raising money for Nationwide Children s Hospital. I am determined to make each step of my 26.2 miles count by fundraising to cure, mend, comfort and save the estimated one million children who will walk through the hospital doors this year. I am asking for your help. Nationwide Children s is the home of the largest neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the country and has some of the best pediatric physicians doing world-class research. This year, my neighbor s son, Corey, was born prematurely at 30 weeks. Corey spent months in the NICU at Nationwide Children s. I will be forever grateful for the medical advancements that saved his life. I am running in honor of Corey and the other courageous children at Nationwide Children s. There is still work to be done, and the need for funding is growing. My personal goal is to raise $1,500. Any contribution you are able to make is greatly appreciated. All donations should be made payable to Nationwide Children s Hospital. You can mail donations to me in the enclosed, stamped envelope or you can donate online at my personal web page http://www.nationwidechildrens.org.kintera.org/. Thank you for helping me to reach my goal. I truly appreciate your support. Sincerely,
