International Purple Day Raising awareness of epilepsy Tuesday 26 March 2013 Scottish Charity No: SC000067

Purple Day 2013 Purple Day was founded in 2008 in Canada, by nine year old Cassidy Megan. It s an international effort to raise awareness about epilepsy, motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy, and anyone, anywhere can get involved. Epilepsy Scotland would like to see as many people in Scotland as possible taking part in Purple Day. Let s get people thinking and talking about epilepsy. On Purple Day, people wear purple to school or work, and post the photos to our Facebook page and Twitter to raise awareness of epilepsy and much needed funds. Purple Day is gaining momentum in the US and Canada, and in 2013 we want YOU to get swept away in Purple Fever!!! Why purple??? Lavender is the international colour for epilepsy. Enclosed in this pack is an A to Z of exciting fundraising ideas...have a look, use your imagination, get your friends, family, school and workplace involved and help stamp out stigma by raising awareness of epilepsy. Please contact us on 0141 427 4911 or email fundraising@epilepsyscotland.org.uk for more information, sponsorship forms or help with planning an event to support the 54,000 people in Scotland affected by epilepsy. Thank you for your support! The Fundraising Team Helen and Kerry

Hints and Tips for Fundraising By raising funds you are doing something immensely worthwhile so remember to feel good about your fundraising. Tips 1.Always remember, you don t need to feel awkward about asking for sponsor money - you really deserve the sponsorship when you re putting in so much effort! 2.Always carry your sponsor form with you. You never know who you might encounter unexpectedly. Most people give money to charity, so make it easy for them! The more people you ask, the more money you will raise. Create a Just Giving page (www.justgiving.co.uk), send it to friends, put it on your facebook and let people know! 3.Give sponsor forms to friends and family and ask them to approach people for you. 4.Make sure that you get your top sponsors first. By having your most generous sponsors at the top of the form, others will follow suit and possibly give more than you would achieve otherwise. 5.Matched Funding: many companies will pledge to match their employee's fundraising pound for pound up to an agreed ceiling. It can be more productive to win significant levels of support from a few, rather than small amounts from many. Please, before anything else, approach your employer for matched funding. 6.Gift Aid: through the Gift Aid system we can claim up to 25% on all donations back from the Inland Revenue, at no extra cost to the donor. Please make sure your sponsors ticking the Gift Aid box on the sponsor form also fill in their full name and home address. Good Luck and Thank You. You have our genuine gratitude. Keep going, don t give up and enjoy it!

Purple Cupcakes Cupcake Recipe Ingredients: 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour 1 1/3 cups sugar 3 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup butter 1 cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 large eggs Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place cupcake cases on baking tray. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add butter, milk, and vanilla. Beat for 1 minute on medium speed. Add eggs to the mixture. Beat for 1 minute on medium speed. Beat on high speed for 1 minute 30 seconds until well mixed. Spoon cupcake batter into paper liners until 1/2 to 2/3 full. Bake for 12 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Leave to cool before decorating with purple icing! Purple Butter Cream Icing Cream together: 250g softened butter 600g icing sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Add 2 tablespoons milk and mix until fluffy. Add red and blue food colouring a drop or two at a time until you achieve the desired colour. Please take care when baking and children should always be supervised by a responsible adult. Epilepsy Scotland is inviting schools, colleges and workplaces to get baking! Selling or simply sharing purple cupcakes and raising awareness and funds for epilepsy on Purple Day!

Every year thousands of children and adults living in Scotland are diagnosed with epilepsy. By supporting Purple Day you can help Epilepsy Scotland continue to provide essential support to people affected by epilepsy. With your help we can deliver: Your Support Makes the Difference Adult and Youth Projects offering emotional support and practical assistance to change lives Training in understanding and managing epilepsy, and administering emergency rescue medication A Freephone helpline, text and email support, and information service Support for parents and carers Schools awareness programmes Research and Policy work including patient experiences on epilepsy surgery, epilepsy rescue medication and your child, and campaigning for more epilepsy specialist nurses... The whole project is a lifeline to me and my family. Just speaking to the staff on the phone for advice and reassurance is great. I could not be happier with the service. Thank you.
