INSULIN PUMP THERAPY CHANGING LIVES TODAY Have you just been diagnosed with insulin dependent diabetes? Perhaps you ve been on multiple daily injection therapy for years? Or maybe you re caring for someone? Whatever the situation, Medtronic is here to support you in better managing your diabetes with insulin pump therapy. An insulin pump is a discreet electronic device, about the size of a small mobile phone. It closely mimics the way a healthy pancreas functions, replacing the need for frequent injections by delivering precise doses of rapid-acting insulin 24 hours a day to closely match your body s daily needs. HOW DOES THE PUMP WORK? The pump provides insulin to your body at two rates: 1 2 BASAL RATE Small amounts of insulin released continuously throughout the day to mimic the background insulin production of the pancreas. BOLUS RATE Additional insulin can be delivered on demand to match the food you are going to eat or correct high blood sugar. COMPONENTS OF INSULIN PUMP THERAPY Bolus Basal 1. INSULIN PUMP A small, durable electronic device to program your insulin & show you how you are tracking. The device includes a reservoir compartment. 3 1 2 2. INFUSION SET An infusion set includes a thin cannula that goes from the reservoir to the infusion site on your body. The cannula is inserted into the site - similar to where you would give insulin injections. The infusion set is changed every two to three days. 3. RESERVOIR A plastic cartridge that holds the insulin and is locked into the insulin pump. A reservoir can hold up to 300 units of insulin and is changed every two to three days. 2

INSULIN PUMP THERAPY THE BENEFITS Insulin pump therapy offers you many benefits over multiple daily injections (MDI) such as 1,2 : Better HbA1c control Fewer hypoglycaemic events Reduction in glycaemic variability. It can also help to better manage the need for insulin dose adjustment, particularly for meals, exercise, on sick days and overnight - helping you achieve better glucose control. Switching to an insulin pump like the MiniMed 640G, replaces the need for multiple daily injections for better control over your glucose levels. It is easier to do things like eating out, sleeping in on the weekends, playing sports, travelling and even swimming as the pump is waterproof up to 3.6m for 24 hours (IPX8). FEATURE PUMP MDI Fewer Daily Injections 24/7 Insulin Infusion High and Low Alerts & Alarms Insulin Suspension to Avoid Hypos Bolus Calculator Ongoing Insulin Tracking to Avoid Stacking Visualise your Glucose Data LOWER HBA1C 1,2 90% FEWER INJECTIONS 3 CARDIOVASCULAR DAMAGE REDUCED UP TO 4 41% KIDNEY DAMAGE REDUCED UP TO 4 54% NERVE DAMAGE REDUCED UP TO 4 41% 3

THE MINIMED 640G HOW DOES IT WORK? PROTECTING YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE 93% of pump therapy users preferred their pump compared to MDI 5 90% less injections compared to MDI 3 Adjusts for your individual basal insulin needs PROTECTING YOUR HEALTH OUTCOMES TODAY Improved HbA1c 2 Improved glycaemic variability 2 PROTECTING YOUR FUTURE Reduction in diabetes complications such as cardiovascular disease, coronary disease and total mortality 6. HOW SMARTGUARD TM WORKS^ 6.7 5.6 Insulin suspended SmartGuard suspends insulin when sensor glucose is approaching a pre-set low limit. * SmartGuard feature: On Off predicted predicted Sensor Glucose mmol/l 4.5 SmartGuard resumes basal insulin Delivery will automatically resume if sensor glucose recover. ** 3.4 Low limit 2.3 1:00 1:30 2:00 2:30 3:00 3:30 4:00 4:30 Time of day (AM) ^SmartGuard Technology is activated when the MiniMed 640G is paired with continuous glucose monitoring *The dynamic suspend feature is based on certain criteria: sensor glucose must be within 3.9mmol/L of the low limit and predicted to be 1.1mmol/L above the low limit within 30 minutes AND the pump must not be in the refractory period. ** The dynamic resume feature is based on certain preset criteria: sensor glucose must be 1.1mmol/L above the preset low limit and predicted to be 2.2mmol/L above within 30 minutes AND insulin must have been suspended for at least 30 minutes. 4

INSULIN DELIVERY FOR EVERY BODY The infusion set consists of tubing that carries insulin from the pump to you. On one end of the tubing is the reservoir connector that is attached to the reservoir which holds the insulin. On the other end is the insertion site section that attaches to you. Make sure to change your infusion sets every 2-3 days to ensure continuous insulin delivery. Medtronic offers four (4) different types of infusion sets for you to choose from: Sure-T infusion set A simple steel needle infusion set with 90 º insertion which is suitable for those who have had reactions to plastic cannula or a history of bent cannula. Also suitable for pregnant women (up to the 2nd trimester) and small children. Quick-set infusion set Our most popular plastic cannula infusion set with 90 º insertion. Suitable for those who are less active, have limited dexterity and for alternative site usage. Silhouette infusion set A flexible insertion angle plastic cannula infusion set with 30-45 º insertion. Suitable for those who are active, lean or muscular. Also suitable for pregnant women (up to the 2nd trimester). mio infusion set A convenient all in one plastic cannula infusion set with 90 º insertion. Suitable for those who are less active, and for alternative site usage. 5

REAL STORIES FROM REAL PEOPLE A passionate road cyclist, Jason is determined to continue to enjoy the freedom to exercise. It was a trip to an information evening that opened Jason s eyes to the possibilities of using a pump - something that he s been doing since 2010. When I was diagnosed with diabetes, both my brother and I were using MDI. I was the first to go onto an insulin pump and very quickly after that my brother saw the benefit and then he too went onto an insulin pump Having a pump really changed my social life, especially when it came to going out for dinner. Smartguard gives me peace of mind! Check out more patient stories by visiting: medtronic-diabetes.com.au 7
