What s behind the brand? promed is an established brand that has been in the Australian market for more than 40 years Product categories served: Customised drapes and procedure packs Examination Gloves Clinical Apparel Wipes & Surface Protection Patient Care Oxygen Therapy and Respiratory consumables

Oropharyngeal Airways Guedels Did you know? A standard for the colour coding of oral Guedel airways is yet to be developed. Each brand therefore differs slightly in the colours used on each size of the bite block. Confusion may lead to the incorrect size choice being made. We have endeavoured to minimise any potential confusion when introducing our new range of Guedel Oral Airways through clear colour coding to denote size.

Clinical Guidelines Insertion of the airway Oropharyngeal airways are inserted into the mouth of adult patients upside down. Once contact is gently made with the back of the throat, the airway is rotated 180 degrees. In children (airways sized 000-1), the airway is inserted into the mouth right side up to avoid causing trauma to soft tissues. The length of the Guedel airway can be estimated by the distance from the patients nostrils to the earlobe, or the angle of the jaw. The Guedel airway is best inserted when the patient is in the supine position. Prior to insertion the airway should be lubricated with a water based lubricant. Insert with the curve facing the opposing direction and follow the airway whilst turning the Guedel airway through 180 A risk associated with the use of Oropharyngeal airways is the potential to damage the teeth of anaesthetised patients, therefore care must be taken during insertion.

Clinical Applications of Oropharyngeal Airways Maintain a patent airway For use in an unconscious patient 1 Lifts tongue and epiglottis away from the back of the throat Prevents obstruction of the air passage Prevents patient from biting on tongue, ET Tube, clinician fingers Facilitates oral suctioning Improves mask fit during manual ventilation 1 For use in unconscious patients only. Oropharyngeal airways are usually indicated for unconscious patients as there is a high probability that the device may stimulate the gag reflex in a conscious or semi-conscious patient. This could cause the patient to vomit and potentially lead to an obstructed airway. Nasopharyngeal airways are mostly used when the patient has a gag reflex, due to the fact that it can be used on a conscious patient, whereas the oropharyngeal cannot.

Clinical Guidelines Size Selection The correct size of the oropharyngeal airway is chosen by measuring and aligning the flange of the airway with the centre of the patients lips and the tip touching the angle of the jaw. Should the airway not reach this distance a larger one should be selected. Equally, should the airway greatly exceed this distance, a smaller one should be utilised.

Oropharyngeal / Guedel Airways Patient airway is not being maintained either by the patient, applied jaw thrust or the patient has become unconscious. An appropriate sized oropharyngeal airway is then selected. Airway is now patent and ventilation can be maintained.

promed Guedels promed guedels have the added advantage of atraumatic edges providing a reduced risk of trauma upon insertion and a variety of sizing options from 40mm to 120mm. Colour coded bite blocks Non Toxic polyethylene

Sterile single packed Sizes 000-1 100 per box, sizes 2-6 50 per box Semi rigid with enclosed centre channel
