HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY LIBRARY www.hau.edu.ph/university_library/ Library Pathfinder Human Anatomy and Physiology DEFINITIONS Anatomy It is the study of the structure of living things. There are 3 main areas of anatomy: CYTOLOGY studies the structure of cell; HISTOLOGY examines the structure of tissues ad GROSS ANATOMY deals with organs and organ grouping called systems. Comparative anatomy which strives to identify general structural patterns in families of plants and animals, provided the basis for the classification of species. Modern anatomy as a branch of western science was founded by the Flemish scientist ANDREAS VESALIUS. (Lerner, Brenda and Lerner Lee World of Anatomy and Physiology Detroit: Thomson, c2002, Ref 612.003 W927, Reference Unit, University Library) Human anatomy or anthroponomy is a special field within anatomy. It studies organs and organ systems of the human body, leaving the study of tissues to histology and cells to cytology. The human body, like the bodies of all animals, is made up of systems, that are made up of organs, that are made up of tissues, that are made up of cells. Physiology Human physiology is the science of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of normal humans or human tissues or organs. The principal level of focus of physiology is at the level of organs and systems. Most aspects of human physiology are closely homologous to corresponding aspects of animal physiology, and animal experimentation has provided much of the foundation of physiological knowledge. Human physiology is one of the basic sciences of medical study, and as such is most often applied as medical care. The science which treats the functions of the living organism and its parts, and of the physical and chemical factors and processes involved. It is also the basic processes underlying the functioning of the species or class of organism, or any of its parts and processes. (Dorland's illustrated medical dictionary, 30 th ed.
