GDA Labelling Style Guide This guide is designed to ensure consistency in terms of layout and style amongst the companies that decided to provide GDAs in a graphical form in the context of CIAA scheme on Nutrition Labelling. General considerations Common guidelines for all companies signing up to GDA Labelling in graphical form This document is developed by Nutrition Labelling group set up in order to develop tools for the implementation of CIAA scheme on Nutrition Labelling Consistency is an imperative of this initiative Practical considerations The front of pack is defined as the face which the shopper would see at the point of purchase The back of pack is defined as the face which the shopper does not see at point of purchase GDA information for salt/ salt equivalence instead or in addition to GDAs on sodium can be provided, where relevant 1 This style guide is designed for the Front of Pack labelling of GDAs. If there is a wish to apply it on Back of Pack, the company may do so. Example of label: vegetable soup All the consecutive examples of GDAs are being used on the basis of the nutrition information provided on a pack of vegetable soup. Nutrition Information Per 100 ml Per portion (1 bowl, 250 ml) Energy 56 Kcal 240 Kj 140 Kcal 600 Kj Protein 4,5 g 11,3 g Carbohydrate 8,8 g 22,0 g of which sugar 1,2 g 3,0 g Fat 0,4 g 1,0 g of which saturates 0,1 g 0,3 g Fibre 1,9 g 4,8 g Sodium 0,1 g 0,3 g 1 CIAA guideline for BOP labelling of GDAs FCP20506E Annex 1, page 5 Page 1

A 250 ml portion provides Energy Sugars Fat Saturates Fibre Sodium 140 Cal 3,0 g 1,0 g 0,3 g 4,8 g 0,3 g 7% 3% 1% 1% 19% 10% of an adult s guideline daily amount* * The nutritional needs of individuals may be higher or lower, based on gender, age, level of physical activity and other factors. Wording referring to Energy icon only Three options for Energy GDA labelling: Option 1: Calories + value Option 2: Energy + value + kcal Option 3: value + kcal Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 The above 3 options for the Energy logo wording may apply when labelling five GDAs. See examples below. Option 1 Option 2 Page 2

Option 3 Position and order of the 5 GDAs Positioning of the icon on pack shall always be horizontal, except where the shape of the package requires the use of the vertical option (ex. cylindrical packs). Order of the icons should be: energy sugars fats saturates sodium Horizontal Vertical Page 3

Additional icons Additional icons to the existent 5 icon system can be introduced with a 3mm gap to their right. (Eg Fibre) The additional GDAs must be based on the values developed by CIAA. Size of the GDAs icon The wording above and below should be not less than 8 point font size The width of a single GDA icon for each nutrient should be minimum 8mm and the height 12mm Ideally, the size and location should not be altered during an on pack promotion or pack redesign Figures of the GDAs icon Energy value to be rounded to the nearest integer (whole number) Number figures (grams) should be declared to one decimal place, even in cases where the nutrients represent 0,1g Percentage GDAs should be whole numbers and rounded up or down to nearest %, eg 4.4% = 4%, 4.5% = 5% If possible, sectors should agree on the variety of multipack labelling. Where no such agreement is reached, the operator should decide independently what to put on the label. For nutrients not present in the product and declared as 0g, in the bubble should be indicated 0 % (for example fat in soft drinks) Colour of the GDAs icon Monochrome colours should not include red, green, or amber in order to avoid the confusion with traffic lights system (unless these colours are the main pack colour) Page 4

To avoid additional colours being introduced into the artwork, tonal values of a particular colour used within the artwork may be used as long as there is a significant contrast Text should be in contrast with the background Choice of main background colour Page 5
