Website www.pancreas2016.org Key Dates Call for Abstracts July 2015 Registration Opens July 2015 Deadline for early bird exhibition fee 30 November 2015 Deadline for submission of abstracts February 2016 Notification of acceptance of abstracts Early March 2016 Deadline for early registrations End March 2016 Welcome Letter I am delighted to welcome you to participate in the International Symposium on Pancreatic Cancer 2016 which will be hosted by the Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre and held at the University of Glasgow, Scotland on 9-12 June 2016. The theme of the conference will be Precision Medicine for Pancreatic Cancer. This conference will provide a common platform for all specialists involved in pancreatic cancer to interact and share the latest information and developments and to promote the highest standards of treatment, education and training, clinical and basic research, disease prevention and patient care at a multi-disciplinary level. The International Symposium on Pancreatic Cancer, Pancreas 2016, will bring together 350 medical oncologists, surgeons, radiographers, gastro-enterologists, molecular pathologists, pathologists and clinical and basic scientists from all over the globe, to explore current knowledge in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. The central theme of Pancreas 2016 is Precision Medicine. Although many view the term precision to relate to molecular medicine, in this context it aims to refer to all aspects of pancreatic cancer. We need to better resolve the clinical and histopathological characteristics of pancreatic cancer so that we can relate these to molecular approaches that are emerging as potential clinical tools. Pancreas 2016 follows on from the successful meetings in Verona in 2014 and Kyoto in 2012 and is a major event in the calendar, providing a unique opportunity for all those working in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer to learn of the latest developments in this rapidly changing and expanding field. Glasgow is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, host of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and a past holder of the European City of Culture award, it is widely recognised as being among the world s most exciting cultural capitals. It is a friendly city where people are proud of their heritage and delight in making visitors feel welcome. While Regius Professor of Surgery at the University of Glasgow, Joseph Lister advanced the idea of sterile surgery by his use of carbolic acid to sterilise surgical instruments and to clean wounds, which led to a reduction in post-operative infections and made surgery safer for patients. Following his time at Glasgow University, Lister took up a post as Regius Professor of Surgery at Edinburgh University, and the current holder of this position, Professor O James Garden, CBE will take up the Lister theme during his talk at our opening ceremony. We are looking forward to a very successful conference; one which reflects our strategy of mixing science and topical issues with the latest advances in research, technology and clinical care to create an integral event in which the needs of commercial companies as well as delegates are fully met. As well as having an integrated exhibition and sponsored satellite symposia, we will also include industry speakers in key sessions with the aim of improving collaboration, fostering relationships and bringing academic and industry participants together to achieve shared goals. We are asking the pharmaceutical and medical technology industries to participate actively in this prestigious event which will act as a shop window for all that is best in the field of pancreatic cancer, as well as providing a major opportunity for you to promote the interests of your company. We hope you share our enthusiasm for the conference and forward to seeing you in Glasgow in 2016. Best wishes Professor Andrew Biankin Conference Chair, Pancreas 2016 2

General Information Venue The International Symposium on Pancreatic Cancer, Pancreas 2016 will take place in the historic Bute Hall at the University of Glasgow, UK. Glasgow is Scotland s largest city and is one of Europe s most exciting destinations, combining the vibrancy and sophistication of a great international city with the warmth of its people and a sense of style which is second to none. The University of Glasgow, recently shortlisted as Scottish University of the Year - 2014, dates from the middle of the fifteenth century and today is one of the UK s leading universities with more than 18,000 undergraduates and 7,000 postgraduates, 6,800 staff and an outstanding academic reputation both nationally and internationally. University of Glasgow alumni include the father of economics Adam Smith and renowned physicist and engineer Lord Kelvin. Many of the most significant discoveries and advances in healthcare were made in Scotland including antiseptic surgery; the introduction of chloroform as an anaesthetic; development of the Glasgow Coma Score for neurological assessment of patients with suspected brain injury; discoveries of the first beta-blockers, and the use of statins to prevent heart attack; interfering with ovarian hormone action as a therapy for breast cancer; pioneering the use of Caesarean sections to improve survival rates of both mothers and babies; the demonstration of the link between poverty, poor diet, and ill health; understanding transplant rejection; and the use of X-rays, MRI and ultrasound in medicine. The University also plays an important role in Scotland s cultural life with some of Glasgow s best-known attractions, including the Hunterian Museum (Scotland s oldest public museum and the venue for our Welcome Reception), the Hunterian Art Gallery and the Mackintosh House (the reassembled interiors from the Glasgow home of the renowned architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh) being located at the heart of the University. Glasgow International Airport is only a twenty minute journey by taxi and with 30 airlines serving approximately 100 destinations worldwide, is Scotland s principal long-haul airport. Profile of Attendance Over 350 delegates are expected to attend Pancreas 2016. The previous conference in Verona attracted this number and the very strong scientific and educational programme, combined with the attractiveness and accessibility of Glasgow as a destination, leads us to be confident of an excellent attendance at the 2016 Conference. This biennial conference provides an international forum for clinicians, surgeons and other specialists such as medical oncologists, imaging radiographers, oncology radiographers, gastroenterologists, molecular pathologists and clinical scientists involved in the treatment of pancreatic cancer and as the conference has a translational theme we will also be actively encouraging pathologists and basic scientists to attend. The treatment of pancreatic cancer requires close co-operation between specialists from different medical disciplines as well as those involved in research into the disease, so while the majority of delegates will be specialist clinicians and surgeons, the support of an interdisciplinary approach towards research, treatment and care will be one of the key objectives of Pancreas 2016, and the conference will provide a critical mass of delegates to explore developing challenges and areas of debate in pancreatic cancer. The previous conferences in Verona (2014) and Kyoto (2016) were very well-attended with representation across a broad spectrum of the international pancreatic cancer community. Based on the delegate profiles from previous meetings, we expect that approximately 35% of participants will be from the UK, 30% from elsewhere in Europe, 20% from North America, 8% from Australia and New Zealand, with the remaining 7% from the rest of the world. 3
