Intelligent Osteoarthritis/ Arthritis therapy (IAT) The conceptual mission of Arthro Nova Clinic

Stryker I-Suite, Stryker GmbH & Co.KG Inflammation and degeneration of the joint is the most common disorder of the modern world. However, the underlying molecular pathomechanisms of the disease are poorly understood and accordingly, treatment of the etiological causes is still pending. Currently, basic treatment programs dealing with arthritis vary with the severity of the symptoms. Patients often receive treatments using standard technologies and methods, whereas individualized aspects are inadequately considered. Consequently, treatment success does not always yield the highest levels of patient satisfaction and as a result patients are looking for alternatives. In the yellow press thousands of products are offered every day claiming efficaciousness that has never been proven. Frustration is the result. The Arthro Nova Clinic recently developed an innovative modular therapy conception to treat and cure inflammatory and degenerative joint disorders, named IAT. Preliminary clinical results have already been published. Fundamental analysis of the deficiencies of currently used osteoarthritis/arthritis therapies is the basis of the novel IAT concept.

Stryker I-Suite, Stryker GmbH & Co.KG

Examples of inadequacies include: q preponderant symptomatic therapeutic interventions (mostly mono therapy) q severe side-effects q treatment algorithms are not established q discontentment of patients due to non effective treatments q insufficient individualized adaptation of therapy q element of uncertainty in terms of disease and prognosis q therapies without effect (charlatanry) These observations led the Arthro Nova Clinic to develop the innovative IAT concept: The IAT concept is based upon individualized coordinated combinatorial therapy that is optimized for the expectations and needs of the patient. Prerequisite for the design of an efficient treatment concept is to analyze risk factors involved in the onset of the disease. Comprehension of the everyday activities, with regard to loading on the knee and other joints, will ultimately lead to the determination of the maximal loading capacity (individualized diagnostic). According to the maladjustment of the load passing through the joint and the weight-bearing capability an individually adapted therapy program will be designed. The recommended procedures and treatments of therapy include preventive measures by avoiding aggravating activities, modification of sport and work environments (conservative components) and if necessary, can be supplemented with surgery. To provide optimal synergy effect on positive outcome and patient satisfaction the different procedures will be combined. Patients have access to a broad range of medical therapies and supplements to develop individualized plans for their specific Osteoarthritis/Arthritis. Arthro Nova Clinic provides the best possible care, healing and recovery for every patient with musculoskeletal conditions that will individually adapt to the severity of symptoms and disease.

Mainstays of the IAT State-of-the-art Diagnosis Basic treatment program (Medication and supplements) Hold of joint destruction Joint replacement surgery Arthro Nova Clinic contains state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to assure diagnosis, monitoring of therapy and prognosis of the disease. Examples of areas of expertise include: q anamnesis (identification of disease inducing factors) q magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment (cartilage sensitive sequences) q specialized X-rays of the knee and other joints q sonography q clinical algorithms q blood and urine specific test assays q genetic analysis q laserscanning (3D Scan)

Left: (Ars Arthro AG) Damaged knee joint q Focal defect in the cartilage layer Middle: (Ars Arthro AG) Damaged knee joint q Punched out area prepared for transplantation plus the transplant adapted to the size of the defect Right: (Ars Arthro AG) Tranplanted knee joint q With CaReS transplant filled cartilage layer IAT's basic program is designed to yield maximum benefits with minimal side effects. Arthro Nova Clinic offers a series of procedures and products that provide powerful anti-inflammatory action and result in greater pain relief. Combination and dose of agents depends on causes, severity and prognosis of the disease and include: q medical therapy and supplements (combination of anti-inflammatory, anti-phlogistic and analgesic drugs) q physiotherapy (traction therapy, exercises to strengthen muscles around joints) q automatic traction therapy (specifically designed equipment) q acupuncture q a healthy balanced diet (specialized restaurant available on site) q supplementary food and nutrition q injection therapy q pain therapy q naturopathic therapies q leeches therapy (hirudo medicinalis) q microvolt-level T-wave alternans (TWA) q subcutaneous gold therapy

Arthro Nova Clinic developed conservative surgery to relieve pain, stiffness and to improve function with the best technology available. Cooperation with leading companies in the field of tissue engineering (Ars Arthro AG, Arthrogen, Textilinstitut Aachen) and internationally accepted experts will provide constantly updated innovative technologies and new therapies. Arthro Nova Clinic provides exceptional techniques: q reconstitution of cartilage (ACT) q meniscus substitution (partial and complete substitution) q sealing of meniscus injuries q reconstitution of the physiological patello-femoral mechanism (implants allow the range of motion of a rotating joint with improved weight-bearing capability) q reconstitution of ligaments to allow controlled movement (arthroscopical and minimally invasive techniques) Arthro Nova Clinic offers specific areas of expertise including primary and revision of joint replacement and osteotomy of the hip and knee. State-of-the-art implants are made of extremely durable materials and ensure long-term survival. As a general rule joint replacement surgery is performed employing minimally invasive methods. These less invasive methods speed the recovery following surgery and exercises are begun immediately. A newly developed navigation system allows insertion of implants through a much smaller incision. Therefore blood transfusions are usually not required (exception: revision joint replacement). Through selection of individualized implants, adaption to specific needs of the patient can be assured (e.g. maximal bending for Friday prayer). All joint replacements will be guaranteed to last for > 10 years. In case of non-infection caused loosening of joint replacements within 10 years, the implant will be exchanged at no additional charge. The amount of wear and loosening is proportional to the activity of the patient that can be monitored by analyzing urine samples of the patient using a recently developed assay system. Urine samples can also be delivered via mail.

Stryker GmbH & Co.KG Our techniques and areas of expertise include: q well established artifical bearings/implants made of metal and plastic (long-term results available) q modern bonding techniques for implants q innovative prosthetic devices q revision joint replacement of all different grades of severity q minimally invasive joint replacement q navigation system for surgery q guaranteed success of surgery q monitoring of wear and loosening by urine testing Effectiveness of treatment will continuously be improved to enhance patient care. Emerging new therapeutic strategies will be examined according to accepted scientific standards. Through close cooperation with European university clinics, industrial partners in the field of genetic and tissue engineering, therapy- and self-help groups and leading experts on Osteoarthritis/Arthritis research upcoming new developments can immediately be integrated in our treatment concept. Combining state-of-the-art technologies to treat inflammation and degeneration of the joint adds up to an extremely efficient therapy of Osteoarthritis/Arthritis. Treatment is based on individualized analyses of disease inducing factors and relies on the setting-up of an optimized therapy plan according to modern procedures. For the first time Arthro Nova Clinic offers effective treatment with the best concept available. We are convinced that this specific concept will generate higher standards in orthopaedic health care and finally lead to greatly improved patient treatment and care. Considering the demographic development of our society this improvement offers a distinct advantage.
