Volunteer Program 2018 Thank you for your interest in the Kids Saving the Rainforest volunteer program! We are a wildlife sanctuary, rescue and rehabilitation center located in beautiful Quepos, Costa Rica. We rescue over 200 animals every year. People from all over the world from all walks of life join us from a couple of days up to one month of time to join us in the important work we are doing here. This guide has been designed to help you learn more about the volunteer program here at Kids Saving the Rainforest, help you decide if this is something you would like to explore, and to lead you through the application process. Keep reading to learn more!

Come for the day, or choose to stay! Our volunteer program is essentially broken into two parts: Day Volunteers, and Long-term Volunteers who opt to stay on-site from a couple of nights up to one month of time. (If you are studying or working in a wildlife related field and would like to come for a longer period of time, ask us about our Internship Program!) Day Volunteers Our day volunteer experience is a great chance to visit Kids Saving the Rainforest and give back during your vacation! We offer the program Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The program runs from 9 am- 4 pm. The minimum age requirement is 18 for volunteers on their own, but kids aged 12-17 are welcome with adult supervision, making this a great family experience! The cost for the program is $125 a person for 2 people, and for groups larger than two the cost is $100 a person. The rate includes transportation to and from locations in the Manuel Antonio and Quepos area, and a prepared lunch. The day will begin with a fun & informative 2-hour guided tour of the Wildlife Sanctuary. This will be followed by refreshments and a short activity with a Zookeeper or a Biologist before lunch. You will sit down for a prepared meal in our restaurant where you will get the chance to interact with our staff, interns, & long-term volunteers. After lunch you will complete the main volunteer activity for the day. The nature of this activity will vary, but will likely include some form of providing enrichment to the animals who make their homes in the sanctuary. While you will not be handling the animals, this is a great chance to get up close and personal with them!

Long-term Volunteers Whether you choose to stay with us for a couple of nights or stay for a whole month, long-term volunteers have the chance to really get involved and work with the animals! Typical daily duties include food preparation and distributing food and water to the animals who reside in the sanctuary, cleaning enclosures, providing enrichment to improve the quality of life of the animals in our care, and foraging for wild foods. You may participate in special projects going on here at Kids Saving the Rainforest, and for volunteers staying for one month we ask that you take on a special project of your own. If you have a specialized background or experience, let us know and we may be able to find other ways for you to help out! You will not be handling the animals, but you will be contributing directly to improving their quality of life! You will gain invaluable experience and learn what it s like to work in a wildlife rescue and sanctuary setting. Long-term volunteers have the option of staying in the bunk room of our Volunteer Center, or opting for an upgrade to one of our lovely cottages in the Blue Banyan Inn.

Our Location Kids Saving the Rainforest is located just outside of beautiful Quepos and Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. This location puts you within easy access of beautiful beaches, a world-renowned national park, restaurants, shops, and all the great recreational opportunities this area has to offer. Although it is only a 15 minute drive into town and a 30-minutes to the beach, when you are here on the property all that feels a world away. Located on 85 beautiful acres of rainforest, you can hike into the jungle where you are more likely to come upon a wild troop of Grey-Crowned Squirrel Monkeys or a Poison Dart frog than another human. Everything is alive and green. We also have a beautiful pool with a stunning mountain view to cool off in when you re not working. You will gather for meals in our large, open-air restaurant area where everyone comes together to eat, socialize, and (of course) talk about animals. (A prepared lunch will be provided daily, and basic local staples will be provided to you to prepare your own breakfast and dinner.)

The Accommodations During your volunteer experience you will either be living in the bunk room of our 3-story volunteer center, or in a lovely cottage in the Blue Banyan Inn. The bunk room is an open concept hostel-style space with bunk beds, a nice kitchen, shared bathrooms and shower facilities, three porches with amazing views, and a lovely space for you to gather together with your fellow interns and volunteers. The cottages in the Blue Banyan Inn are a nice option for those volunteers who prefer a more private space with more modern comforts to relax during their time off. Real talk : This is the jungle. There are bugs, hot and humid air, and fans but no air conditioning. ( The cottages have a/c.) You will be living and working in close quarters with up to 8 other volunteers from around the world of mixed genders and ages. You will have mosquito bites and you will sweat and get dirty. This can be a wild and wonderful new experience for you, but you need to come here with the right mindset to make the most of your time here. We are all here to help save the rainforest!
