GENERAL RELAY INFORMATION HISTORY OF RELAY The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a team member on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are traditionally overnight events that last up to 24 hours. Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man s passion to fight cancer, into the world s largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities throughout the United States, along with additional communities in 19 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon to raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, we are creating a world with more birthdays, a world where cancer can t claim another year of anyone s life. Anyone can participate in Relay for Life. Friends, families, neighbors, classmates, sports teams, etc. can form their own teams. No matter who you are, there s a place for you at Relay. HISTORY OF HUMMELSTOWN-HERSHEY AREA RELAY The Relay For Life of Hummelstown-Hershey Area officially began in June 2004 on the grounds of Penn State Hershey Medical Center. While many of our relayers were new, our Relay strived to forge its own identity and reach a much broader audience. Our current Relay, which consistently has well over 700 people, draws participants from all around the Hummelstown, Hershey, Elizabethtown, Palmyra, Annville and Harrisburg areas and includes individuals, groups, families and friends as well as many church groups from the area. 2014 marks the 11th anniversary of our Relay For Life and proves to be the largest event we have held to date.
CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP HOW YOUR SPONSORSHIP HELPS As a Relay for Life sponsor, your donation can help fund and provide research, education, advocacy, and patient services to your community. Donating funds to the American Cancer Society through Relay will directly benefit people in Dauphin and Lebanon Counties. These monies will be used for: Research: The American Cancer Society devotes approximately $130 million to cancer research annually. Since the Society s research program began in 1946, the survival rate for cancer patients has more than doubled. Education: Health care providers and the public look to the American Cancer Society for information on ways to reduce the risk of developing cancer. Community awareness campaigns increase the use of the Society s early detection guidelines for colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers in order to help people detect their cancers at the earliest, most treatable stages. Advocacy: The Society s advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), works at the local, state, and federal levels to ensure lawmakers pass meaningful policies that prevent cancer, assist cancer patients, and support lifesaving research. Service: The American Cancer Society provides trained cancer information specialists, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to answer questions about cancer, link callers with resources in their communities, and provide information on local events. In addition, the Society provides support services and programs to cancer patients and their families, which can include transportation to and from treatment, and guest room housing at Hope Lodges. To learn more, call the Society s toll-free number (800-227-2345) or visit our website at www.cancer.org. PAST SPONSORS OF OUR RELAY FOR LIFE Middletown Tire & Alignment Mike Leonard s Plumbing

ADVERTISEMENT REQUIREMENTS T-SHIRT LOGO One of the things that makes our Relay unique is the individualized T-shirts that are provided to the participants of our event. The front of the T-shirt includes the ACS national Relay logo, which changes each year, and the back of the shirt contains our specific event name with the logos of our high-level sponsors. These t-shirts are not only worn by the participants at the event, but can be found on individuals from the Hummelstown-Hershey community year-round, making them a great advertisement for your company! General specs on the t-shirt ads: Logos on the shirt are approximately 1 x 1, black and white. Each advertisement needs to be provided in black and white and in a high-quality.jpg format (300 dpi). If you are unable to provide an electronic copy of your ad, we are able to scan a print version for you. TRACK SIGNS The track gets transformed during our Relay from a quiet field into a park full of decorations and people all fighting for a cure. Another highlight comes in the form of advertisement signs that line the track thanking our special sponsors. All of the 300+ participants and assorted visitors cannot miss these signs as they walk around the track during the 24 hour event. Make sure that your company can be showcased through this very visible advertisement! General specs on the trackside ads: Logos on the signs are approximately 8.5 x 11 black and white, with a Relay logo in the corner. Each advertisement needs to be provided in black and white (preferably) and in high-quality.jpg format (300 dpi). If you are unable to provide an electronic copy of your ad, we are able to scan a print version for you. IN KIND SPONSORSHIP In-kind sponsors remain the backbone of a successful Relay year. Without such sponsorship, this amazing event would not be available to our communities. The Committee is always looking for specific items prior to the event during the planning process and while onsite. Individuals contributing to the Relay in this way will be recognized both onsite verbally during a Relay wide ceremony and through one or more mechanisms above, depending on the monetary value of the donation. For more information about what is needed, please contact the Event Chair, Suzanne Fisher at teddybear32269@aol.com or 717-979-8139
