SPECIALIZING IN ORTHOPEDICS A definitive need In recent years, the expert knowledge of the human musculoskeletal system has made substantial advancements with regard to its structure and functions. The insights into functional problems and the related diagnostic and therapeutic options have become more concise. It has become increasingly difficult for individual physicians to gain an overview across the entire field of expertise to provide optimum services to affected patients. Hence, the discipline of orthopedic surgery has also begun to follow the global trend of medical specialization. Over the past few years we have implemented a team structure at our clinic that accommodates these developments. Each team is under the direction of a special executive physician. Each team leader has acquired a well-founded advanced education in an orthopedic sub-discipline and also has completed a broad general education in orthopedics and traumatology. Hence, we are in a position to offer patients who are suffering from injuries or functional issues of the musculoskeletal system high quality services while we also cover the basic orthopedic needs of all patients. 4 5

Impact on the Quality of Medical Treatment It is logical and has also been scientifically proven in some cases that the result of medical treatment hinges largely on the competent analysis of the problem at hand and high quality initial treatment. Specialized physicians possess thorough knowledge of the pathologies in their fields of specialization and are familiar with the best diagnostic and therapeutic options that will ensure the success of the treatment. Experts also have the insights required to quickly recognize potential complications and to take competent action. The focus on only one area of the body increases the number of cases of this kind handled by each physician, which results in higher quality treatment. Our team structure simplifies the processes thanks to clear treatment paths and makes them more efficient. Impact on the Quality of Advanced Education Our clinic holds a fully FMH accredited continued education certification for the subject «Orthopedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Traumatology.» Some of our team leaders are actively involved in the conduction of specialized orthopedic doctors exams and/or are members of expert commissions with the Swiss Orthopedics Association (SGO). Thanks to its academic involvement, our executive staff is not only making contributions to research, but also participates in the teaching process. Our respective teams are not only able to pass on treatment standards, but are also capable of systematically teaching additional expert knowledge to interns participating in advanced education programs. Our team organization has led to the creation of a contemporary continued education structure. As a result, the Kantonsspital Baselland has become a very attractive continued education facility for orthopedics, but is also held in high esteem by senior physicians aiming to advance their specialization. 6 7

Interdisciplinary Fields Interdisciplinary Emergency Station At its interdisciplinary emergency station, the Kantonsspital Baselland offers injured or acutely ill patients efficient first aid and treatment services around the clock. The team of emergency room physicians seeks the assistance of experts whenever necessary for the initial diagnosis and treatment. The orthopedic emergency physician and an executive team physician treat primarily patients who have sustained relevant injuries or are suffering from acute musculoskeletal diseases. Severely injured patients and those who have sustained unstable spinal column injuries are treated in cooperation with the Musculoskeletal Treatment Center of the Basel University Hospital. Plastic Surgery, Tumors and Pediatric Orthopedics If bone and joint surgeries require complex soft tissue coverage, the team in charge involves Prof. Dirk J. Schäfer, MD, the Head of Plastic, Reconstructive and Esthetic Surgery at the USB. Musculoskeletal tumors and special pediatric orthopedics cases are treated in cooperation with the Musculoskeletal Treatment Center at the Basel University Hospital and the Pediatric Orthopedic University Clinic. Injured children who do not have to spend extended periods of time in the hospital, are treated by our orthopedic team. Musculoskeletal Infections The successful treatment of musculoskeletal infections especially infections that arise post artificial joint implant surgery hinges on special diagnostic resources and the optimum balancing of surgical and antibiotic treatments. Our orthopedic-infectology unit works in close cooperation with experts to integrate clinical, microbiological and scientific competencies for the benefit of the affected patients. Diabetic Foot Syndrome Consultations The diabetic foot syndrome is the root cause of two thirds of all lower extremity amputations. The syndrome is the result of circulatory problems, neuropathy or diabetic-neuropathic osteoarthropathy («Charcot foot»). Given that these complex illnesses are on the rise, a need for an interdisciplinary patient consultation option arose. Our clinic offers this service in partnership with angiologists and endocrinologists. Conservative Orthopedics and Physical Medicine The focus of conservative orthopedics and physical medicine in on the provision of services to patients suffering from musculoskeletal problems that do not require surgical intervention. The required examinations and the initiation of treatments are provided as periodic consulting services at our emergency station and in all of our clinics. Conservative treatment is offered in cooperation with the hospital s therapeutic center, which comprises physiotherapy, ergotherapy and speech therapy. Patients suffering from neurological diseases are treated in accordance with a special interdisciplinary concept offered by the Kantonsspital Baselland ( Neurokonzept ) in partnership with the Medical University Clinic, the neurological counseling service and the therapeutic center. 22 23
