Explain how swine flu spreads between people. 2. Tell why a new name was chosen for swine flu. 3. Explain the new name H1N1 Influenza A. 4. Briefly describe how the new strain of Influenza A arose. OVERVIEW FOR TRAINERS: This is a follow-up lesson on swine flu. This lesson contains some optional information which is more technical. Adapt this lesson to your group. This new strain of swine flu or H1N1 flu was identified. 4. Swine flu has now been identified in several other countries. II. Swine flu or H1N1 influenza? 10 II. Swine flu or H1N1 influenza? A. What causes swine flu? A. Swine flu 1. Swine flu is caused by an Influenza A virus. 2. A virus is a tiny germ which is too small to be seen by eye or even by a regular microscope. 3. (A microscope uses lenses to

The virus may have spread from pigs to people near the pig farm in Veracruz, Mexico. 3. But now the virus is spreading from person to person. C. Why would some people C. Swine flu? not like the name swine flu? 1. Now the virus is spreading mostly from person to person, so it is not just in pigs. 2. Pork and bacon are safe to eat. 3. The farmers and companies who produce pork products did not like the name swine flu. 4. They don t want people to be scared to eat pork or bacon. 5. And Mexicans did not want it to be called Mexican flu. 6. So health officials chose a new name, calling in H1N1 Influenza A H1N1 Influenza A (Optional) This section is more technical. Adapt it to your group. 25 III. H1N1 Influenza A A. Recently the name was A. Influenza A changed from swine flu to H1N1 Influenza A. What does Influenza A mean? 1. 2. There are several types of Influenza A virus. There are Influenza A, B, C and other types. B. Show the drawing of the B. Influenza Virus Influenza Virus. (This is magnified a lot an 1. The virus has a complex design. influenza virus is too small even to see in a regular microscope.) What do you see? 2. On the surface of the virus are Haemagluttinan (H) and Neuraminidase (N) particles or proteins. 3. There can be different types of H and N particles. 4. So swine flu is H1N1. C. How does a pig virus infect C. Shift in influenza strain people? (Optional) Divide into small groups. Look at the drawing of Shift in Influenza Strain. Ignore all the technical details. Basically, what is happening here? Report 1. Pigs, birds, and people can all be infected with Influenza A. 2. Normally, pigs are infected with swine flu; birds are infected with bird (or avian) flu, and people are infected with swine flu. back. 3. Each influenza virus is slightly different. 4. Sometimes the different strains of Influenza virus become mixed together. The technical name for these genetic changes in the Influenza A virus is 5. So the genetic material (or genes) in the bird virus can be mixed with genetic material
3 antigenic shift. from humans and from pigs. 6. The result is a new strain of H1N1 Influenza A. 7. Pigs may be infected with this new strain. 8. And sometimes people may pick up the infection from pigs. 9. Now the new strain is being passed from person to person. 10. This new H1N1 strain seems new to the person, even if they had the flu before. 11. Our current Influenza A vaccines do not work against this new strain. 12. So the new strain of Influenza A may spread to many people. IV. Response IV. Response A. How can we respond to this A. Response new strain of Influenza A? 1. We can trust God. He is in control. 2. Spend time praying for wisdom for the health officers, and for care of those who are sick with this new Influenza A virus. B. Spend time praying. References: Wikipedia. 2009. Antigenic shift.
