SGHS NHS Induction Ceremony and Script Ashley Good evening and welcome to the annual South Gray High School National Honor Society Reception and Induction Ceremony. First of all, we want to say a big thank you to the faculty, administration, the Board of Education and especially to our parents for your support and encouragement to all of us to set our goals and expectations high; without it we might not have been here this evening. We appreciate your attendance here this evening to celebrate with us. The South Gray High School NHS chapter was started in 1979 with the then Montezuma High School. When Copeland and Montezuma went into a sharing agreement the charter name was changed to South Gray. Each year the local NHS chapter is required to do at least one service project and can do a fundraiser for educational purposes and scholarships. We chose to put on a free community wide babysitting night at the Morningside Church for our community service project. We made a snack and provided juice to the kids. They enjoyed an evening running around and watching movies with their friends. We also helped with the elementary Family Fun Night. In addition, we sold Red Wheel food items to earn money for the scholarships that will be given out tonight. We celebrated the year by taking a trip to Oklahoma City in March. Another item that we must complete each year is the Induction Ceremony which will take place here this evening. First, we will have the blessing and then new members and parents will be our first guests at the dessert table. Madison Blessing (Begin when everyone is finished with dessert) Membership in the National Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility. The purpose of this organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the remaining students of SGHS. Members are expected to continue at all times to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership, and character by which they were selected. At this time Madison will give you an understanding of the principles of NHS and introduce each of the members to you. As has already indicated, membership to South Gray NHS is defined by the characteristics of scholarship, service, leadership, and
character. The academic requirement for scholarship is set by the National Council based on a student s cumulative grade point average. The individual chapter may raise the standard if they wish and currently the GPA level is at 3.5 for our chapter. The leadership criterion is considered highly important for membership since it is based on school and community involvement. Service is defined in terms of attitude and value of contributions to others. Character, is perhaps, the most difficult to define. The positive and negative aspect of a student s behavior and personality are taken into consideration free of hearsay and rumor. A proper regard for adolescent growth and behavior is essential. Evaluation of potential members and current members is always on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service and character. (Catrina - stand and light the middle large candle.) The candle that Catrina is lighting represents the eternal light of knowledge and is flanked by four blue candles representing scholarship, leadership, service and character. At this time I will introduce each member of the South Gray National Honor Society. (Stand briefly as your name is called.) Ashley Davis - President Axtell - VP Luke Skinner - Secretary Jackson Miller Emily Salmans Haylee Brown Catrina Watts Kaylee Gleason Jeremy Berg Ismael Rosas and I am - Madison Dirks STUCO Rep and now Jeremy will give you information on the selection process for NHS. Jeremy Selection to the NHS chapter at South Gray High School is a pretty easy and straight forward process. This year all sophomores and juniors for 2016-2017, meeting the scholarship requirement of 3.5 or higher are invited to a meeting in Mrs. Davidson s room for further instructions in filing out the forms for the selection. These forms consist of listing leadership positions, service activities, and an essay describing an incident utilizing all four characteristics needed to be a National Honor Society member. A deadline is set for the information to be reviewed by a five member faculty council. The faculty council meets to review the forms and makes their selections based on the information provided. At that point the current NHS members then surprised the new inductees at lunchtime with balloons and candy
and informed them of their selection to SGHS NHS. Now, before names are called, individual members will give a definition of each of the criteria by which you have been selected. Ismael will define leadership. Ismael Emily Jackson Luke (Light one blue candle, first). Leadership should exert a wholesome influence on the school. In taking the initiative in class and school activities, the real leader strives to train and aid others to attain the same objective. The price of leadership is sacrifice - the willingness to yield one s personal interests for the interest of others. A leader has self-confidence and will go forward when others hesitate. No matter what power and resources may exist in a country, they are ineffectual without the guidance of a wise leader. Leadership is always needed; thus, to lead is a substantive charge to each of our members and to the candidates. Service, the next criteria is defined by Emily. (Light one blue candle, first) Service can be described in various ways. In the routine of the day s work, many opportunities arise to help others. Willingness to work for the benefit of those in need, without monetary compensation or without recognition is the quality we seek in our membership. We are committed to the idea of volunteering our time and abilities to the creation of a better tomorrow. Jackson will define character. (Light one blue candle, first) Character is the force within each individual which distinguishes that person from others. It gives each one individuality. It is that without which no one can respect oneself, nor hope to attain the respect of others. It is this force of character which guides one through life and once developed grows steadily. Character is achieved and not received. It is the product of constant action, daily striving to make the right choice. The problem of character is the problem of self-control. We must be in reality what we wish to appear to others. By demonstrating such qualities as reliability, honesty, and sincerity, we may hope to prove by example that we value character. And now Luke will discuss scholarship. (Light the last blue candle first) Scholarship means a commitment to learning. A student is willing to spend hours in reading and study, knowing the lasting benefits of a cultivated mind. We should continue to learn even when formal education has ended, for education ends only with life. Knowledge is one great element in life which leads to
the highest success, and it can be acquired in only one way - through diligence and effort. Learning furnishes the lamp by which we read the past and the light which illuminates the future. Candidates have the charge to continually expand their world through the opportunities inherent in scholarship. Haylee will introduce the new inductees to NHS. Haylee It is time to introduce the new members of South Gray High School National Honor Society. As your names are called a member of NHS will bring you the pledge and membership candle (Catrina take pledge and candle to them as they walk up). **Jackson light each new member candle Hannah Askew Eli Bullinger Courtney Colbert Kassidy Dahlke Craig Griebel Austin Jantz Melissa Loepky Mikayla Loewen Shonsee Loewen Clifton Miller Victoria Powell Benny Thiessen Martha Titus Jessie Unruh **All Members of NHS rise for the pledge Hannah Lead everyone in recitation of the National Honor Society Pledge.
