Healthy eating: English Healthy eating This information is about how to eat well and keep to a healthy weight. It explains why a healthy diet is important. There is also a healthy eating guide that explains the different types of food and what makes a healthy diet. Underlined words are explained in the glossary at the end. It will reduce your risk of: cancer heart disease stroke diabetes. If you ve already had cancer, having a healthy diet can help reduce the risk of a new cancer. A healthy diet will also: help you keep to a healthy weight make you stronger give you more energy help you feel better. Many people in the UK are heavier than the recommended weight for their height. Some cancer treatments, such as hormonal therapies or steroids, can cause weight gain. Being overweight increases the risk of many types of cancer, including cancers of the pancreas, bowel, kidney, womb and gullet (oesophagus). Women who are overweight and have been through the menopause are at an increased risk of breast cancer. Try to keep your weight within the normal range for your height. Your GP or practice nurse can tell you what your ideal weight is. If you re worried about your weight, ask your GP or a dietitian for advice. Making changes to your diet Making changes to your diet gradually can make it easier. You could try writing down what you normally eat for a few weeks, and then compare it with information on healthy eating. Then you can set yourself some small goals. If you ve never had fruit with breakfast, you could try this. For snacks, you could try swapping chocolate or crisps for dried fruit and nuts. Keep a note of what you eat and how you feel, physically and emotionally. Making changes can be enjoyable. You may discover new foods that you haven t tried before. Before making changes to your diet, it can help to talk to your GP. If you ve had cancer It can be difficult to make changes to your diet if you are coping with cancer and its treatment. Many people find that making positive changes to their diet helps them feel more in control and positive. It can also improve your strength and energy levels, and reduce stress. After cancer treatment, some people have a higher risk of other health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease or osteoporosis (bone thinning). If you are at risk of any of these conditions, it s especially important to follow a healthy diet to help prevent them. Page 2 of 7 Macmillan fact sheet 2015: Healthy eating

Talk to your doctor or nurse about your diet. They can refer you to a dietitian, who can give you expert advice. Things you can do Only eat as much food as you need. Your GP or dietitian can give you advice on portion sizes. Eat a healthy diet with lots of fruit and vegetables, and less fat and sugar see the healthy eating guide below. Be more physically active. Keep a diary of what you eat, so you can see where you could make improvements. Healthy eating guide For most people, a healthy diet includes: Fruit and vegetables - a good source of vitamins, minerals and fibre. Starchy foods (carbohydrates) - a good source of energy, fibre, iron and B vitamins. Foods include bread, rice, pasta, noodles, couscous and potatoes. Fibre - helps keep our bowels healthy and prevents constipation. Try to eat a variety of foods with fibre. Foods include wholegrain bread, brown rice, oats, beans, peas, lentils, grains, seeds, fruit and vegetables. Protein - your body needs protein to function, grow and repair cells. Foods include meat, poultry, fish, nuts, eggs and pulses (beans and lentils). Fat you need a small amount of fat in your diet. It is important to choose unsaturated fats (for example, nuts or avocados) instead of saturated fats (such as dairy, chips, pastries). Eat less fried foods and less fatty cuts of meat. Choose low-fat dairy products and have chicken or fish without the skin. Page 3 of 7 Macmillan fact sheet 2015: Healthy eating

A balanced diet The graph below shows what proportion of your diet each type of food should be. For example, a third of what you eat should be fruit and vegetables. Salt Diets that are high in salt can increase the risk of stomach cancer. Reducing the amount of salt you eat will help lower your blood pressure and your risk of heart disease and stroke. The maximum amount of salt recommended for adults is 6 grams a day, which is about a teaspoon. Try not to add salt to your food. Use herbs, spices or black pepper for flavouring instead of salt. Marinate meat and fish before cooking to give them more flavour. Sugar Sugar is a good source of energy and occurs naturally in things such as fruit and milk. But foods such as sweets, biscuits, cakes, pastries and puddings have lots of added sugars and should usually be avoided. Fizzy drinks and alcohol often contain a lot of sugar too. Cutting down on foods and drinks with added sugar is important when trying to lose weight. Alcohol Alcohol has been linked to an increased risk of some cancers, including mouth, gullet (oesophagus), breast, liver and bowel cancers. Alcohol may contribute to weight gain. It s best to limit how much alcohol you drink and have one or two days each week with no alcohol. Current drinking guidelines recommend: Men should not drink more than 3 to 4 units of alcohol a day. Women should not drink more than 2 to 3 units of alcohol a day. Page 4 of 7 Macmillan fact sheet 2015: Healthy eating

One drink isn t the same as 1 unit of alcohol: Drink Half a pint of beer, lager or cider Standard glass of wine (175ml) Large glass of wine (250ml) Single measure (25ml) of a spirit (such as gin or vodka) Units of alcohol 1 to 1.5 units, depending on strength 2.1 units 3 units 1 unit Physical activity Being active is also important when keeping to a healthy weight. Being active doesn t always mean exercising intensely. It could be as simple as going for short walks or gardening. As you gradually build up your strength, you can choose an activity you enjoy. Walking, dancing, yoga, swimming and cycling are some of the many activities that will help you become fitter and healthier. In the UK, adults are advised to do: Two and a half hours (150 minutes) of physical activity each week. This could be split into: 30 minutes of activity on five days of the week or 10 minutes of activity, three times a day, on five days of the week. Glossary Constipation - When you find it difficult or painful to open your bowels (go to the toilet). Dietitian - An expert in food and nutrition. They can tell you which foods are best for you. Hormonal therapy - Treatment that affects certain hormones in the body. This can slow down or stop the cancer growing. Menopause The time in a woman s life where her period (menstruation) stops. Osteoporosis (bone thinning) A medical condition where the bones become weak because of a loss of calcium. Steroids A type of treatment that can be given for cancer. Steroids can be given as tablets or by injection.
