September 26, 2009 About Nashville CARES Supportive Services for Men, Women and Children Living with HIV or AIDS: Nashville CARES provides support services to more than 2,400 individuals and families annually, helping them meet survival needs, access and make optimal use of life-saving medical treatment, and cope with the practical, emotional and social challenges of living with HIV or AIDS. Last year, for example, Nashville CARES did the following and more: Provided 133,500 meals to 1,150 people living with HIV or AIDS Gave 3,000 hours of CARE Teams help with household chores Helped 1,200 clients find and keep housing More than half of clients for services are African American; one-quarter are women; roughly half are gay or bisexual and half heterosexual; and they range in age from young people to those in their 60s. HIV Prevention Education: Nashville CARES education programs reach more than 50,000 adults and youth annually to give them the knowledge, motivation and skills to protect themselves against HIV infection. For example we: Taught 15,000 women and 4,000 teenagers to protect their health and their loved ones through small groups and individual education Tested 1,800 people for HIV and linked those who tested positive to care and support Distributed 176,000 safe-sex kits and hundreds of thousands of HIV prevention brochures through bars, beauty salons and barbershops, and via other local businesses and presentations More than half of those educated each year are teenagers or young adults; nearly half are African American or Hispanic; forty percent are women; and more than half are gay or bisexual men. All Nashville CARES programs are free of charge thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers.
