2 0 1 2 S P R I N G E D I T I O N RTES Riding High Richmond Therapeutic Equestrian Society * Making a Difference in the lives of Children with Disabilities NADIA S STORY You do your best when you find out your child has special needs...when you hear the doctor tell you your daughter has Cerebral Palsy, your heart just sinks. We were told horseback riding was a good therapy and quickly decided we had to try it. Our first experience was one we would never forget. The first time I tried to get Nadia on a horse, she screamed and yelled, and was not even willing to get on a saddle that sat on a barrel. I wanted to do my best to comfort her and somehow get her on the horse. RTES called us for the summer session 2009, and I was afraid...what if she would not get on the horse? We arrived at the stables, and all was well. Nadia was just quiet. She did not make a fuss, and she knew she was going on a horse. We were greeted by the staff, all smiling at Nadia, and she smiled back and I started to feel less tension in her grip. Nadia got on the horse, she rode with no problems and never looked back. Therapeutic horseback riding has helped her build her confidence and every week we go to her lesson, she is happy with the therapy, mostly because she sees how much it has helped her.

What has the therapy done for her? So many things: confidence, straitening her back, improving her posture, increasing her strength and flexibility and helping her to learn to walk more upright and improving her balance. Nadia takes great pride in herself when she says she is riding a horse. Nadia has improved so much while riding at RTES, and for us, her parents, it is so nice to see. Nadia is now walking on her own, able to stand without holding onto something, and loves feeding the horses carrots at the end of her lessons. The staff and volunteers at RTES, are also unforgettable. They help Nadia feel so secure, and they smile at her, and play with her. She loves trotting, and standing in two point on the horse, and now she is really proud of herself. ~ Nadia s Parents It s that time of year again!! The lovely sunny days of summer are behind us, the leaves are turning golden, another season is unfolding. A reminder that it is time to plan for the RTES Annual General Meeting, which offers an opportunity for our team to reach out to RTES parents, friends and the community at large to seek new volunteers for our Board of Directors. Our society requires the commitment of as little as two or three hours per month, occasionally a few more, to keep the organization humming along within the regulations & guidelines provided. We have a great team at the stable who work tirelessly to see that the program runs well. To be sure, the Board is responsible for raising the funds required for the program, and at least one key event each year that brings our supporters together, but that is still not a heavy commitment when we realize how fortunate we are to have several key supporters, and when we consider how many children benefit from participating in the program. AGM Details: Date: Tuesday, November 13, 2012 Location: Richmond City Hall, No. 3 Road at Granville, Room M 1002 Time: 6:30 p.m. Please mark your calendar..... then, closer to the date, confirm your attendance. Frances Clark, Chair

Summer Season at RTES Some very excited people got a call from the RTES office this June to say that there was room in our Summer Session for them. Five new riders from our waiting list and four returning riders that are only available during the summer months joined us for a fantastic four week program from July 9th to August 1st. Some of the new riders will be joining us in our regular year long program starting this September. Please say a friendly Hello to any new faces you see and help us welcome them to the society. ~~~ August also brought us the kids favourite week of the year, Summer Camp! This year, the schedule was a bit different and the kids were able to ride twice per day! Riding is always the best part of camp and the kids were thrilled with the extra opportunity to spend time with their equine partners. ~~~ After a year of volunteering and another year as a member of the RTES staff, Jacquie Hummelman, our Volunteer Coordinator left us August 31st to pursue a career as a Special Education Assistant. Jacquie will be attending the one year program at the Langley Campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University. A special farewell dinner was held for her, with staff, Board members and volunteers in attendance. Everyone at RTES wishes Jacquie all the best and much success in her future! Stephanie s hours will be increasing a bit as she will be assuming the role of Volunteer Coordinator along with her Instructor role. When one door closes, another opens...carolyn Bratkowski will be joining us Monday mornings to give the staff a hand with whatever needs doing. Carolyn has been a volunteer with RTES for a couple of

years now filling in often at the last minute whenever we needed someone and has been involved with horses her whole life. Carolyn is sure to be a good fit with our existing team. RTES 2012/2013 Schedule Here is the schedule for the 2012/2013 year. Some dates are still to be determined: RTES Annual General Meeting, Fall In House Show and our big annual fundraiser. Emails will be sent out when these dates have been set and an updated calendar will be posted in the lounge, on our website as well as in the next newsletter.

Thank you Telus! Bobby Farr of Telus emailed RTES in August that she had another donation for the program, in the amount of $6480.00. The kids at camp welcomed Bobby and her husband and invited them to watch them ride after posing for a photograph. It is wonderful to have the continued support of Telus throughout 2012. We hope to have their continued support in the future. Pacific National Exhibition Donation In June of this year, after approval of our application, the PNE donated 8-2012 Playland One Day Play Passes and 12-2012 Fair Gate Admission Passes with a cumulative value of $508.40 through the KC s Kids Donation Program. The passes were handed out to children that ride at RTES; giving them an opportunity to have a wonderful summer experience with their families without the financial stress that a family outing can bring. From all accounts, we have some dare devil kids that couldn t get enough of the rides that belong to our society! Thank you Kate Huffman, Community Relations Manager and everyone at the PNE for this generous donation.
