ADVANCED INSTRUMENTATION CLINICAL WORKSHOP: BIOFILM MANAGEMENT Activity Description Although the ultrasonic instrument was originally introduced as a device for removing gross supragingival calculus of tooth surfaces, it has emerged as an evidence-based approach to managing subgingival periodontal disease. Several events have occurred to elicit this response, such as: Recent emphasis on periodontal care for all patients, especially with nonsurgical modalities Evidence-based research demonstrating effectiveness with ultrasonics Equipment enhancements with emphasis on tip size for anatomical negotiation in tandem with patient comfort Increased physical fatigue and ailments by dental providers who have been using traditional instrumentation Consideration for time efficiency The hands-on workshop will update the dental clinician with the versatility of using ultrasonic instrumentation in periodontal root planing and supportive maintenance procedures. This course is designed for dentists and dental hygienists. Educational Objectives At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to: Describe the current literature justifying the use of power driven instrumentation Describe the indications and contraindications for power driven instruments, including safety precautions Select the necessary instruments commercially available to achieve effective results Implement techniques to enhance patient comfort Incorporate power driven instruments into the periodontal component of the practice Speakers Shannon Mitchell, RDH, MS Jennifer Brame, RDH, BS, MS Shannon Mitchell is a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Dental Hygiene at the UNC School of Dentistry.
