TeamTalk Tell us something good l CAMP T.J. Submitted by: Shara Page, Rehab Director JULY 21, 2015 l Another awesome year for C.A.M.P. TJ in the books; every year is one that makes a special mark on the hearts of all involved. This camp is designed to be a fun summer booster for children with special needs. C.A.M.P. (Children Always Making Progress) TJ begin in 2007 with 7 campers at the local YMCA and has continued to grow and change over the last 15 years. This year we had 42 campers registered and 48 volunteers who enjoyed the week at South Green Elementary. C.A.M.P. TJ is a researched based camp that is offered to the children in our community who typically do not have the opportunity to participate in a traditional camp like sports or academic camp. Our week is designed to follow a theme; this year the theme was board games with Candy Land being the top hit. Each child is placed in a group for the week with a cool group name like the Blue Twisters and every day has a special theme. The children engage in activities around the theme for the day. Water day is always a favorite day for the campers; as evidenced by the multitude of smiles, giggles, dancing, jumping and singing. The community involvement helps to make C.A.M.P. TJ possible. Every year we are overwhelmed with the support of volunteers that give of their time to support these kids. The volunteers that support each camper are many of our local high school and college teens. This staff is incredible as many of them come back year after year to help their camper with crafts, feeding, toileting and to ensure that the camper has an amazing day. This year the additional therapy volunteers included: Danny Williams (husband of Bridget Williams, Speech Therapist) provided Music Therapy, Alyssa Harris, Behavioral Therapist from CLIK in Bowling Green, and Belmont Professor Nancy Darr, PT, DSc, NCS. Other local community supporters who joined us at camp to speak to the campers were WKU cheerleaders, American Martial Arts Academy, Kentucky State Police and Glasgow Fire Department. Thank you A special thanks to each of you who continue to make this possible. We have many of our TJ Samson departments and employees who help every year. These include the marketing department, human resources, employee health, materials management, nursing, housekeeping, laundry services, hospital grounds, dietary and our rehab team.

CAMP T.J. Thoughts from a Veteran Volunteer By Amber Jewell Amber Jewell, Volunteer "Forever thankful for each year I get to spend volunteering at this camp. I started volunteering at CAMP TJ in 2010, and haven't missed a summer yet. This camp is what made me realize what I want to do with my life as a career path. From crawling on the floor pretending to be something my camper wanted me to be, to the panic of "where did my kid just go," to the meltdowns, to being a human jungle gym, to getting home and questioning what exactly is in my hair...it's just a week, but makes my summer feel complete every year. Everyone always tells us about how much we change the kids' lives, but it's by far the kids that make the biggest impact on us. Out of everything I manage to do each summer, the weeks spent at this camp are days I will never forget." Great job! This compliment from a patient was submitted in one of our Pavilion suggestion boxes: Farewell, Dr. Turpen! Came for my appointment with Dr. Small. Valet was super nice to me. Put me in a wheelchair and took care of me. Registration girls were so nice, pleasant and caring. Dr. Small s nurse as always was great. Sent me for labs and x-ray, they were wonderful also. My entire visit was very efficient, caring and a complete pleasure. I appreciate it so much. Thank You.
