Details of Chapter activities since last report. 1) recruit new members We recruited new members in various ways. We advertised and introduced SPIE Student Club through the network and some posters; many students join us for the attractive activities and conferences held by SPIE. This year we have recruited more new members, which proves that our chapter has certain effect in operating the club and more students get to know the SPIE club and its conferences. 2) held a dinner party to welcome the new members We gave the new members of our chapter a warm welcome by holding a dinner party. During the dinner party, Professor Leng, the advisor of our chapter, introduced our chapter and the SPIE Student Club to the new members with his humor. All students showed great interest. Then the new members are asked to introduce themselves to each other, the old

members shared their experience. Everyone enjoyed their times. During the discussion, they were pleased to provide advices about the future activities planning and the management of the chapter. At last, the new officers are elected, and president Li gave us a short conclusion. 3) made new member cards We have made the name cards for the new members. 4) attended the SPIE conference Our SPIE Club member Yao Li was elected to attend the SPIE Student Chapter Leadership Workshop and the Optics & Photonics conference 2012 in San Diego, USA. He brought us new thoughts and ideas on the management of the chapter from the international conference, and built new relationships with other chapters, such as Zhejiang university chapter, in China. And he also successfully invited Pro. Doumont to pay a visit to our institute. As we know, Dr. Doumont is a popular instructor and invited speaker worldwide. 5) hold a tea party In order to increase understanding between the new members and share the ideas, we held a tea party, most of the members attend the party, and they all showed great interest in this exchange patterns. Also, Pro. Leng delivered a speech on the development of our club, we discussed the activities and everyone expressed his ideas. We also provided some fruits and desserts; the atmosphere is warm and friendly. At last, some

students began to play puzzle games. At this time, we felt at home, this is positive. 6) outdoor action In order to build a harmonic and relaxed atmosphere, we choose the Shanghai Happy Valley as the activity place. The members enjoyed a good time when we discussed the development of SPIE Student Club, and we harvest much. And on the other hand, the relationships between the members are closer, which is easier for the expansion of our chapter. 7) organized some lectures with other organization We invited some famous scientists to give a lecture in our institute. 8) Organized a lecture to our institute At the end of October this year, the secretary of our chapter has invited Dr. Jean Luc Doumont to our institute. Dr. Doumont is one founding partner of principia, which is one organization about structuring thought. He gave us a lecture about how to train engineers, scientists, business people and other rational minds in effective communication pedagogy, statistical thinking and related themes, and conveying messages with graphs. Many students of our institute came to attend the lecture, which lasted about three hours. At the end of the lecture, Dr. Doumont presented his books Trees, maps and theorems to our club and two lucky students. As a gift, we gave Dr. Doumont one of the Four Great Classics named Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the related card

games. He enjoyed them very much. At last, we took a group photo to mark the occasion. And then, some members of our club together Dr. Doumont have a lunch, all enjoyed it. This is an interesting and impressive lecture, the students benefited a great deal. Later this day, accompanied by Yao Li and Xiaoyang Guo, Dr. Doumont visited the famous Ancient Pretty Garden. He wished he would come again. 4. They were talking in a small group. He had a great passion She was busy writing down the decision. It was our tea party; the principle purpose was to discuss the outdoor activity of the club. Everyone attended the party expressed his opinion.

6. Details of planned activities for the future 1) Hold a dinner party to welcome the new members and elect the new officers. This year we have recruited 42 new members, for the effective management of the club, we will elect the new management team. 2) Complete the coming visiting lecture program. Joseph M. Howard will give our chapter a lecture in the coming spring, we together other two chapters invited him last year, but due to the schedule problem, he will come in spring. 3) Make the name cards for the members. 4) Hold some academic lectures associated with optics and photonics. We will invite some famous professors or experts to give us some useful academic lectures, and we also ask advisor Leng to introduce us to visit some optical company. 5) Hold a meeting with other chapter in China for the experience exchange and research problems discussion. Such as OSA chapter in our institute, other SPIE chapters in China. 6) Organize a relaxation activity. Each year we will hold a relaxation outdoor activity. We plan to organize a small fun sports meeting in our institute, a visit to a famous place. This can attract more students to pay close attention to SPIE and learn more from the nature.

7) Several internal discussions in our chapter. We will have some internal discussions and study. 8) Visit one laboratory or factory to help employment.
