Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in partnership with The Bone Marrow Foundation and the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP)/Be The Match present: Bridging Treatment to Transplant and Current Advances OCTOBER 21, 2017 Zuckerman Research Center 417 East 68th Street New York, NY www.mskcc.org/bmtcourse
Bridging Treatment to Transplant and Current Advances In 1956 the first bone marrow transplant was performed by E. Donnell Thomas in Cooperstown, New York. The first successful bone marrow transplant was performed by Dr. Robert Good for a patient with severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome. From a rarely performed procedure, now more than 10000 transplants are performed yearly in the United States as treatment for more than 70 life threatening illnesses including cancers, genetic disorders, and other diseases. This symposium will focus on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from different sources as a first line treatment for a variety of malignant or non malignant disorders. Speakers will discuss bridging initial treatment to transplant, barriers to transplantation and current advances in the field. TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience includes physicians, nurses, and social workers: oncologists, hematologists, and disease specific specialists EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Recognize the importance of early referral Understand new transplant techniques that have led to improvement in outcomes Establish treatment strategies that link pre-transplant and transplant therapies In partnership with The Bone Marrow Foundation and the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP)/Be The Match.
