PACKAGE LEAFLET: INFORMATION FOR THE USER Nutriflex plus Solution for Infusion Amino acids / Glucose / Electrolytes Read all of this leaflet carefully. It provides a summary of information about your medicine. Keep this leaflet. You may need to read it again. If you have further questions, please ask your doctor or your pharmacist. This medicine has been prescribed only for you. Do not pass it on to others. It may harm them, even if their symptoms are the same as yours. If any of these side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist. In this leaflet: 1. What Nutriflex plus is and what it is used for 2. Before you use Nutriflex plus 3. How to use Nutriflex plus 4. Possible side effects 5. How to store Nutriflex plus 6. Further information 1. WHAT NUTRIFLEX PLUS IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR The product contains substances (nutrients) called amino acids, salts (electrolytes) and glucose which are essential for the body to grow or to recover and calories in the form of carbohydrates. You are given this product by a vein drip (infusion) because you are unable to eat adequately or cannot be fed via a tube. It is called a nutritional supplement. Nutriflex plus is specifically indicated for patients with moderately severe catabolism, a condition where patients are burning up their stores of energy, protein, etc. faster than they can be replaced. 2. BEFORE YOU USE NUTRIFLEX PLUS Do not use Nutriflex plus if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to active substances or any of the other ingredients of Nutriflex plus if you have a severe inborn disorder of amino acid metabolism, where you need a special protein diet if you have any kind of poorly controlled metabolic disorder, for example severe diabetes mellitus, accumulation of sour (acidic) substances in your blood (acidosis) if you have excessively high blood sugar level that needs more than 6 units of insulin per hour to be controlled if you have abnormally high blood electrolyte levels if you have bleeding within the skull or the spinal cord. Nutriflex plus should not be given to babies and infants that are under two years old. As with other medicines of this type Nutriflex plus should not be given if you have: severe liver disease severe kidney disease without treatment by artificial kidney state of unconsciousness (coma), the cause of which is not known life threatening blood circulation problems as can occur if you are in a state of collapse or shock inadequate supply of oxygen to cells excess body water content 1

water in your lungs (pulmonary oedema) heart problems (decompensated cardiac insufficiency). Special care will be taken with Nutriflex plus if you have impaired heart or kidney function if you have disturbances in fluid, electrolyte or acid-base balance, for example low body water and salt content (hypotonic dehydration), low sodium or potassium level in your blood if you have high blood glucose levels. Special care will be taken to adjust and control your daily dose if you have impairment of kidneys, liver, adrenal glands, heart or lungs. Also your daily fluid intake will be controlled. If you are in a state of severe underfeeding, special care will be taken to build up your intravenous feeding gradually, accompanied by adequate controls and necessary supplies of electrolytes, in particular potassium, magnesium and phosphate. Nutriflex plus contains glucose (a sugar) so this may affect your blood sugar level. Blood samples may have to be taken to check this. If your infusion has accidentally been stopped suddenly your blood sugar level may also drop suddenly. Therefore especially after stopping the infusion your blood sugar level will be carefully monitored. Moreover controls of your blood electrolyte levels, the water balance, the acid-base balance and during long-term administration of blood cell counts, blood clotting, kidney and liver function are necessary. As with all intravenous solutions strict aseptic precautions are necessary for the infusion of Nutriflex plus. Taking or using other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. Nutriflex plus can interact with some other medicines. Please tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following: medicines for treatment of inflammation (corticosteroids) hormone preparations affecting your fluid balance ( ACTH ) medicines that promote urine flow such as triamterene or amiloride medicines for treatment of high-blood pressure (ACE-inhibitors) medicines used in transplant medicine such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus. Pregnancy and breast-feeding Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. You may be given this product while you were pregnant. However, your doctor will administer it only if he/she thinks it is essential to your recovery. Breast-feeding is not recommended if women need intravenous feeding in that time. 3. HOW TO USE NUTRIFLEX PLUS Dosage Your doctor will decide how much of this medicine you need and for how long you will require treatment with this medicine. Adults 2

The daily dose for this age group is 17 to 40 ml of solution for infusion per kg body weight (BW) per day. This solution will be administered to you at a maximum rate of 1.6 ml per kg BW per hour. Children and adolescents Nutriflex plus must not be given to children up to the completed 2 nd year of life. The dosage for children over two years will depend on the child s age, status of development and actual disease, according to the particulars of each individual case. The following may be taken as guidance for the daily doses: Children in the 3 rd 5 th year of life: 21 42 ml per kg BW for Children in the 6 th 12 th year of life and weighing 20 30 kg: 21 42 ml per kg BW Children in the 6 th 12 th year of life and weighing more than 30 kg: 20 42 ml per kg BW Adolescents in the 13 th 18 th year of life: 20 42 ml per kg BW The rate of infusion will not be higher than 1.8 ml per kg BW per hour. Patients with special conditions If you have any condition where you have an abnormally high blood sugar level, e.g. after injury, if you have oxygen deficiency or otherwise impaired organ function, your glucose dose will be reduced accordingly. Patients with kidney or liver impairment The doses will be adjusted according to your individual requirements if you have a liver or kidney disease. Route of administration Nutriflex plus will be administered to you by infusion into a large central vein. If you receive more Nutriflex plus than you should It is unlikely that you would receive an overdose of this medicine on proper administration. However, if you are given too much of this medicine this may lead to: excess body fluid electrolyte disorders water in the lungs amino acid losses in urine accumulation of acidic substances in your blood (acidosis) sickness, vomiting, shivering high blood sugar level glucose in urine dehydration highly concentrated body fluids ( hyperosmolality ) unconsciousness caused by extremely high blood glucose levels. If this happens the infusion must be stopped immediately. Your doctor will decide on any additional treatment to be given. The infusion will not be started again until you have recovered. If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist. 4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS Like all medicines, Nutriflex plus can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Side effects are mainly caused by overdose or too rapid infusion. They will usually disappear when the infusion is stopped. 3

If you experience any of the following side effects, contact your doctor or hospital immediately Rare side effects (affects 1 to 10 treated patients of 10,000) Reactions of intolerance (re-feeding syndrome) may occur if you are in a state of severe underfeeding and too high doses are administered. The symptoms of these intolerance reactions are drops of serum electrolyte levels, sleepiness and damage to red blood cells. Feeling sick (nausea) and vomiting. Excessive amounts of urine: If the solution is infused too rapidly, you may pass excessive amounts of urine. If these rare side effects occur your treatment should be stopped, or if the doctor decides, it may be continued but at a lower dose level. Under conditions of inappropriate use: Drop in blood sugar level: After abruptly stopping your treatment the blood sugar level may drop below normal levels, especially in children under 3 years, patients having diabetes or having other problems with glucose tolerance. So at the end of infusion gradual reduction of the infusion rate is recommended. Reporting of side effects If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. You can also report side effects directly via HPRA Pharmacovigilance, Earlsfort Terrace, IRL - Dublin 2; Tel: +353 1 6764971; Fax: +353 1 6762517. Website: www.hpra.ie; e-mail: medsafety@hpra.ie. By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine. 5. HOW TO STORE NUTRIFLEX PLUS Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Do not store above 25 C.
