Overview Residents and practicing surgeons who are specializing in oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery will find this course provides an opportunity for surgical updates in the management of facial trauma and reconstruction. Faculty will address various surgical approaches and techniques, emphasizing indications and surgical decision making. Discussion will include the treatment of pathologic fractures, infected and atrophic mandibular fractures, and post-trauma midfacial reconstruction. One session will also focus on free tissue transfer in reconstruction. The prevention and management of complications will also be addressed. Collegial dialogue during faculty panels will promote lively interaction and encourage audience Q & A. Target Audience This course is designed for residents and practicing surgeons specializing in oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery who desire an update in the surgical techniques and technologies available to improve patient outcomes. Objectives Upon completion of this course, the physician should be able to: 1. Discuss controversial topics in facial trauma. 2. Delineate differences in subspecialty approaches and surgical techniques. 3. Describe the appropriate application of current and innovative technologies and instrumentation to treat craniomaxillofacial fractures. 4. Identify steps to intervene when complications, or co-morbidities contribute to complications that arise when treating facial trauma. 5. Address timing and sequencing of post-traumatic revision surgery. 6. Create a comprehensive/multi-disciplinary reconstructive approach for composite facial defects.
