Dr. Eugene M. Seidner PROGRAMS Scholarship and Grants Honoring the memory, achievements and commitments of Eugene Seidner, DDS, our distinguished President, 1996-1997. www.laserdentistry.org 2017 Academy of Laser Dentistry Sponsored by Henry Schein Dental

2017 Student Scholars Elias Almaz University of California San Francisco, School of Dentistry, USA Dr. Masaki Tsubokawa Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo, Japan Dr. Nicholas Montanaro Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, Stony Brook, New York, USA Student Scholarship What is awarded? The Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Student Scholarship is intended to promote the advancement of dental laser technology education and clinical research. The grant covers a year of ALD membership, ALD conference registration fees, Standard Proficiency Dental Laser Education application fees, coach-class round-trip air transportation and hotel accommodations. Upon successful presentation, an award in the form of a certificate for participation will be presented to the scholarship recipients, and each student will receive a small cash gift for first, second, and third place presentations. Who is eligible and how do students apply? Criteria for eligibility are determined by the applicant s demonstrated academic achievement in the study of lasers in dentistry. Undergraduate dental students or graduate dental students in an accredited general or specialty program interested in deepening their understanding of the use of lasers in dentistry may apply. Applications may be downloaded or received by contacting the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Completed applications must be received by ALD by the end of October each year for consideration for the following annual conference. Special Award for Pediatric Dentistry Through a generous pledge specifically earmarked for pediatric dental students, ALD is pleased to provide a special recognition award within the Dr. Eugene Seidner Student Scholarship program for pediatric dental students. This anonymous donation recognizes the commitment to pediatric dental education by ALD member Dr. Lawrence Kotlow, a pediatric dentist practicing in Albany, New York.

Research Grants What is awarded? The Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Research Grant is intended to promote the advancement of dental laser technology education and clinical research. Up to three grant awards of $20,000.00 (twenty thousand) each may be awarded annually to individuals to promote basic and applied clinical research for the uses of lasers in dentistry. These include, but are not limited to, biological responses to light, novel or innovative clinical protocols and procedures, laser device development, novel approaches to lasers in dentistry education, initiatives to enhance public acceptance of lasers, and behavioral approaches to using lasers in clinics. The project has to broadly assess the role of lasers of dentistry, irrespective of the nature of laser use for surgical, diagnostic, antimicrobial, photobiomodulation, photodynamic therapy, imaging, or biomaterials applications. Research proposals on competing designs or devices are not encouraged. Who is eligible and how do researchers apply? Primary applicants or at least one team member must be member(s) of the Academy of Laser Dentistry for the past 3 years prior to application. The applicants should be able to demonstrate they are capable of conducting research that meets the primary objective of this award. There are no age or citizenship requirements. Applications may be downloaded or received by contacting the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Completed applications must be received by ALD by the end of December each year for consideration for the following annual conference. Institutional Relationships The award is made to the sponsoring institution on the behalf of the awardee. The institution must have the environment and general resources suitable for conducting research as stated in the application. A letter of support from the dean or director of the institution must be enclosed with the application. The investigator is directly responsible to the sponsoring institution for the proper conduct of the project and management of the funds. We know you care. How can you help? The future of lasers in dentistry will be built upon the commitments we make today. Like you, we believe the evolution of dental technology and the proper use of that technology will positively impact patient care. Voluntary donations from ALD members, the dental profession, and other sources are expected. Who has benefited? Thanks to your charitable donations to the Academy of Laser Dentistry Dr. Seidner Scholarship program, 26 students from around the world have traveled to the ALD annual session to present their work from University of California, San Francisco, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Montefioire Medical Center NY Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Children s Hospital Colorado, University of Texas Health Science Center, Harvard University, University School of Dentistry Izmar Turkey, West Virginia University School of Dentistry, School of Dental Science at Newcastle University UK, University of Alabama School of Dentistry, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, University of Manchester, UK, University of Louisville School of Dentistry, College of Dental Medicine Nova Southeastern University, and University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.

The Giving History In 2004, ALD introduced the Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Scholarship Program. This scholarship program is named to honor the memory of Dr. Eugene M. Seidner, ALD s President 1996-97. Dr. Seidner is most aptly described as a pioneer for his early use of lasers in his dental practice and for his contribution to the formation of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Known as a giver, Dr. Seidner conveyed his broad vision to all who knew him in a manner that was uniquely warm and generous. The Academy is proud to honor his memory in this way. In 2012, the Academy achieved its $100,000 development goal established for this program. The funds continue to grow, are temporarily restricted and only the interest earned plus a small percentage of annual contributions are earmarked for yearly use to propel the program and safeguard its future. Since the 2004 inception, 26 dental students have earned ALD s Dr. Seidner Student Scholarship honor. The Giving Future In 2017, ALD expands the scholarship options with the introduction of a Research Grants program. By encouraging dental laser research projects, the new Research Grants program is intended to strengthen the Academy of Laser Dentistry s role in fostering a positive impact on dental laser education and research. This addition elevates what has already been accomplished by the ALD. The first research grants award may be announced in conjunction with ALD s upcoming 25th Anniversary in 2018. Future Dr. Seidner programs under consideration include Faculty Awards for quality dental laser research publications. Our Responsibility to Dental Education ALD believes we have a responsibility to the future of dental education. Through the Dr. Eugene Seidner Student Scholarship Program and the new Research Grants Program, we address those issues facing dental education for the safe and effective uses of dental laser technology. In this way, we foster education of today s dental students to be the dentists of tomorrow. We foster the importance of dental laser research within the scientific academic communities. These programs encourage undergraduate and graduate dental students and dental researchers to broaden their understanding of lasers in dentistry; these programs encourage the study of various laser wavelengths and their correct and safe use in dentistry. The Student Scholarship provides financial award to enable students to present their work at the Academy s annual meetings in either poster presentations or scientific and clinical lectures. The Research Grants program provides up to $20,000 to individuals to promote basic and applied clinical research for all uses of lasers in dentistry. The Academy of Laser Dentistry is committed to oral health through laser technology.

The Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD) is an international professional membership association of dental practitioners and supporting organizations devoted to improving the health and wellbeing of patients through the proper use of laser technology. The Academy is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, research, and education and to the exchange of information relative to the art and science of the use of lasers in dentistry. The Academy endorses the Curriculum Guidelines and Standards of Dental Laser Education. ALD was founded in 1993, with the merging of the International Academy of Laser Dentistry, the North American Academy of Laser Dentistry and the American Academy of Laser Dentistry and is a notfor-profit organization qualifying under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. In 2008 ALD Partners with Henry Schein Dental Henry Schein, a Fortune 500 company and a member of the NASDAQ 100 Index, is recognized for its excellent customer service and highly competitive prices. The Company s four business groups Dental, Medical, International and Technology serve more than 550,000 customers worldwide, including dental practitioners and laboratories, physician practices and animal health clinics, as well as government and other institutions. Henry Schein, Inc. is pleased to support the important efforts of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. We are very supportive of clinical education and its impact on expanding and improving clinical services and patient care. It is only through the voluntary efforts of concerned academics and clinicians that emerging technology can evolve into clinical practice for both early adopters and others waiting for the necessary information to integrate these products into their practices. Helping to support ongoing research is very important to Team Schein and its manufacturing partners. We look forward to many years of close association with your program, said Steven W. Kess, Vice President, Global Professional Relations.
